Chapter 305
Chapter 305
With one page of his grudge ledger settled, Boss Zhang drove the old monk back toward the Amusement Park.
If they left now, they’d still catch dinner. Perfect timing!
The monk regarded Zhang Bei with a complicated expression.
“Boss Zhang, that identification of yours…?”
“Classified. Don’t ask!”
The little red booklet was actually a gift from the higher-ups, meant to keep him out of danger within the country.
It carried fuck-all authority, but the title sounded impressive.
National Security Advisor. A form of protection for him.
The old monk opened his mouth, then decided against further questions.
His interest in Zhang Bei, however, only deepened.
This bastard frequently failed to behave like a human being, but his cunning was almost uncanny.
His fighting ability now seemed beyond anything ordinary people could comprehend.
He even had a profound understanding of Buddhist teachings.
“Boss Zhang, does your amusement park need a gatekeeper?”
“What are you up to?”
“I’m getting old. I’ve spent thirty years traveling from the plateau, exchanging views on Buddhist teachings along the way. It’s time to stop and put what I’ve learned in order. I’d like somewhere to study Buddhism.”
Zhang Bei’s eyes lit up.
This old monk wasn’t as harmless as he looked!
It sounded simple, but translated into plain language, he meant: I’ve spent thirty years challenging temples all the way down from the plateau. Now I’m old and can’t keep fighting, so I’d like a rest.
“Don’t need a gatekeeper. Interested in conducting rites for the dead?”
“Hmm?”
“Don’t tell me you don’t know how!”
The old monk hesitated. He certainly did.
Every temple had to take on that sort of work from time to time.
Monks had to eat too, after all!
“As long as you don’t mean physically sending people to the next life, I should be able to manage.”
Smiling, Zhang Bei drove back into the amusement park.
“We’ll be counting on you tomorrow!”
“Rest assured. I’m quite skilled in that area.”
Zhang Bei led him straight to the Cafeteria.
“Meet our new employee. He’ll be handling part of the work at the Morgue.”
Faced with a sea of surprised, dubious looks, Zhang Bei cleared his throat.
“His Dharma name is Jitian. Li Yang, after dinner, introduce him to our tradition.”
“You got it, Boss!”
The old monk rubbed his bald head. “Thank you for looking after me!”
The amusement in everyone’s eyes made his heart give a sudden lurch.
Was this tradition… respectable?
After a hearty dinner, Li Yang led him to the rides.
“Pick one?”
“Hmm?”
“New employees have to try a ride. Any ride.”
“You’re serious?”
“Yep. We’ve all done it.”
The old monk sighed and looked at the nearby Drop Tower.
“That one, then. Not many people seemed to faint on it. I should manage.”
Li Yang was about to explain, but a look from Zhang Bei stopped him.
Under the moonlight and the ride’s lamps, the old monk boarded the Drop Tower.
Zhang Bei personally fastened the safety harness around the man in his fifties.
Then he turned and headed straight into the control room.
“I’ll operate it myself. Stand aside.”
The doctor gave him a worried look.
“Be careful. He’s getting on in years!”
“What’s wrong with being old?”
“Looking down on the elderly, are you?”
The two old professors’ menacing stares made the doctor shiver.
“Nothing. I’ll keep an eye on things outside!”
Without a moment’s hesitation, Zhang Bei pressed the start button.
The Drop Tower slowly rose. Boss Zhang frowned at the thirty-meter height displayed on the monitor.
He turned and slapped the red button four times in succession.
Li Yang was still yawning, waiting for the ride to stop at thirty meters.
Instead, the Drop Tower extended wildly upward as though it had swallowed Viagra.
The old monk stared in confusion at the rapidly receding ground.
Wait. This wasn’t how the thing had worked when he watched it before!
How could it do this too?
The seat behind him vanished, leaving him suspended in midair by the safety rope.
Fuck! Boss Zhang, have a shred of humanity!
“Aah! Buddha, save me! Holy fuck! Buddha, please save me…”
His uniquely desolate screams echoed through the sky.
Zhang Bei leaned back in his chair in the Monitoring Room, thoroughly content.
The countdown ticked away, while the screams overhead remained impressively vigorous.
And they called this old?
Zhang the Inhuman turned and added five minutes to the timer.
If this old monk didn’t pass out today, Zhang Bei would change his name to Heaven-Destroyer!
Naturally, Jitian didn’t hold out for long.
He’d spent several days watching this ride and thought he understood it.
None of that could suppress the terror inside him.
“Boss Zhang! Let me down! I won’t believe in the Buddha anymore. I’ll believe in you!”
“Fuck! Let me down!”
Listening to the clear, piercing screams, Zhang Bei quietly poured himself a cup of tea.
Ordinary people could never understand his happiness.
After a full fifteen minutes, the doctor slipped a Suxiao Jiuxin Wan pill into the old monk’s mouth.
He looked at Boss Zhang’s unrestrained grin and sighed deeply.
One last regret for the day about signing that wretched contract.
Stop the count. Resume tomorrow!
The day ended, and soon the park opened for business again.
The old monk was ready for his first day serving the public.
The amusement park opened its gates and welcomed the day’s first visitors.
As usual, the familiar submariners arrived. Nangong Zhi also poured in with a group of burly men.
“Boss, why are we here instead of training today?”
Nangong Zhi looked at his newest recruit and tried his best to smile kindly.
“We’re taking you out for some fun. Just stick with me.”
“Thanks, Captain!”
The young man was named Xu Ju and had only recently transferred out of the military.
His abilities were first-rate, but after so many years in the armed forces, he had yet to receive a proper beating from the wider world.
Their scheduled monthly visit was still a few days away. To help Xu Ju fit in sooner, Nangong Zhi had simply brought him along for an early taste of despair.
Soon, they reached the Roller Coaster.
“Captain, do we really have to start with this one?”
“It’s fine. We’ll do the Hot Air Balloon afterward.”
“All right, then. Whatever you say, sir!”
Xu Ju had no idea what awaited him.
Identification in hand, he headed toward the priority entrance.
“Captain, the owner must be a really good man. We even get half-price tickets!”
At the words “good man,” everyone turned to look at him.
That creature was a good man?
Did he even qualify as human?
Without him, they could have used their monthly leave to see their girlfriends, have a meal, and find somewhere for a little private fun.
Instead, they got two days off a month, and this rotten place swallowed one of them.
Worse, a cross-country training exercise would have been easier than coming here.
By now, they had tried practically everything in the Amusement Park.
Yet they had experienced not a trace of happiness. Only fear and humiliation in abundance.
No, there was some happiness. The Hot Air Balloon was its sole source.
Soon, the group took their seats on the Roller Coaster.
Xu Ju scratched his head at the empty front row.
“Boss, aren’t we sitting up front?”
