Chapter 170

Nangong Guo: ???

What the hell was this sword even good for?!

Goddamn it, whoever designed this place was a complete bastard!

After all that, the battery was the only useful thing he’d found?

As the spectral figure before him drifted closer and closer, Nangong Guo made the sensible choice.

Run!

Two bubbles escaped his mouth, and he shot out of the room in the blink of an eye.

He even closed the door behind him on his way out.

Only when he saw that the woman couldn’t follow him did he breathe a sigh of relief.

Then he looked at the remaining rooms on the second floor and felt his entire body go weak.

What the hell was this supposed to be?

Opening blind boxes?

Just as Nangong Guo was debating whether to investigate another room, a noise suddenly came from behind him.

He spun around to find a cautious-looking man creeping toward him.

A living person?

Holy shit, so this wasn’t a single-player game?

The man noticed Nangong Guo as well.

Their eyes met.

Two bubbles escaped each of their mouths.

Nangong Guo immediately rolled his eyes.

Damn it, not being able to talk underwater was such a pain!

The man tried communicating with Nangong Guo through hand gestures.

“What have you found here?”

“These rooms are like blind boxes. I’m planning to open another one.”

The two gestured at each other for ages, only to realize that neither had the slightest idea what the other was trying to say.

Nangong Guo handed the sword to the man, adjusted his breathing apparatus, and pointed at a door.

This time, the man understood. He took the sword and stood guard at the doorway.

Nangong Guo took out the remaining keys and tried them one by one.

Before long, there was a faint click, and the door slowly swung open.

The room was packed with clutter. At its very center stood a metal barrel sealed with a lid.

Nangong Guo narrowed his eyes and waved to the man behind him.

Seeing no immediate danger, the man entered with the sword in hand.

The beams from their two headlamps instantly illuminated the entire room.

Blowing bubbles, Nangong Guo approached the barrel and cautiously lifted its lid.

Blood immediately spilled out, slightly clouding the surrounding water.

When the light shone into the barrel, Nangong Guo’s pupils abruptly contracted.

Where there was blood, there was naturally a corpse. It was just that this particular corpse was difficult to describe.

To be more specific, it looked no different from a puddle of red sesame paste.

Even after years spent undercover, he had never seen anyone die like this.

The man behind him was nearly in tears.

Bro, would you turn around and look at me already?!

Help!

Holy shit, I’m about to die here!

Two hands that looked like rotting sludge were wrapped around the man’s neck.

He had no idea what had latched onto his back. All he could feel was a bone-chilling cold.

After calming himself, Nangong Guo finally turned around.

The first thing he saw was the man entangled with a heap of minced flesh in an utterly indescribable position.

The sight was so shocking that Nangong Guo froze for several seconds before he finally reacted.

In that instant, countless thoughts raced through his mind.

This thing was clearly the same kind of creature as the woman in the next room. Physical attacks were completely useless against it.

And the man had obviously already been caught.

In the span of a single second, Nangong Guo made another very sensible choice.

Run!

Whatever. Godspeed, brother!

The struggling man could only watch as Nangong Guo fled the room.

He even helpfully closed the door behind him.

The icy sensation against the man’s back grew stronger and stronger. Then, as if one disaster wasn’t enough, his headlamp flickered twice and went completely dark.
Darkness descended, and the entire underwater room seemed to come alive.

All manner of things began gathering around him.

In the searchlight’s final glimmer before it went dark, the man finally saw what was behind him.

The sheer shock made his eyes roll back, and he fainted on the spot.

At that moment, the half-formed helmet emitted a series of mechanical clicks.

In the blink of an eye, it sealed itself over the man’s head, forcing the water out with pressurized air.

Oxygen flooded the inside of the helmet.

As the designer, Zhang Bei knew full well that safety always came first.

The helmet’s design perfectly addressed the possibility of someone losing consciousness underwater.

Before long, a figure pushed open a panel in the floor and emerged.

The figure raised an eyebrow upon seeing the unconscious man.

They quickly took out a rope, secured it to the man, and dragged him back along the route they had come.

Meanwhile, the fleeing Nangong Guo had also given up on exploring any further.

The searchlight still had enough power to get him to the next level. If he kept gambling on mystery boxes, he was afraid he’d be done for too!

He made his way to the door, felt around for the lock, and opened it with the key.

A descending staircase appeared before him.

Without the slightest hesitation, Nangong Guo swam down.

There was only one level left. No matter what, he had to finish exploring it, right?

The third level looked more like a massive warehouse.

Iron chests covered the floor, while rotting wooden barrels lay scattered everywhere.

Not far away stood an iron door.

Could that be a way out?

Nangong Zhi’s eyes lit up, and he swam around the barrels toward it.

He tried every remaining key in succession, but not one of them could open the iron door.

Nangong Guo fell silent as he stared at the scene before him.

Oh, fuck me!

He had to open mystery boxes again?

With iron chests scattered all over the floor, there was no way to know what was inside without opening them.

After a long moment of hesitation, Nangong Guo slowly swam over.

Even if they were mystery boxes, he still had to open them!

He had no idea how much time had passed, but one thing was certain: the battery didn’t have enough power to keep the light on for much longer.

Judging by his previous experience, the designer had definitely hidden the key in one of these iron chests.

But the thought of the designer gave Nangong Guo a strange idea.

Surely these chests weren’t all full of ghosts, were they?

After pondering the question for a long time, Nangong Guo came to a conclusion.

No human being could be that cruel. At least, no human being should be.

He cautiously opened the chest closest to him.

A flute immediately came into view.

Beneath it was a small metal plaque explaining its origins.

Relieved that it wasn’t a corpse, Nangong Guo picked up the Bone Flute with one hand and turned his attention to the plaque.

[Bone Flute, originating from a tribe of hunters.]

Nangong Guo was pleasantly surprised when he read that. This was good stuff!

Hardly anyone knew how to make a Bone Flute these days.

A well-crafted Bone Flute could even survive for centuries.

His gaze returned to the metal plaque.

[This tribe has a custom. When a close family member dies, they remove one of the deceased’s leg bones and use it to craft a Bone Flute.]

[The moment you picked it up, the dead soul bound to the Bone Flute had already manifested.]

After reading the description, Nangong Guo looked down at the Bone Flute in his hand.

Designer, could you at least try to act like a decent human being?!

He couldn’t see the words beneath the Bone Flute without picking it up, but by the time he did, it was already too late.

Seeing that nothing had happened yet, Nangong Guo immediately rushed toward the next mystery box.

That thing could show itself at any moment. His best bet was to hurry up and get out of here as soon as possible!
