Chapter 195
Chapter 195
Calling their faces ashen would have been an understatement.
Apart from Qingqing’s unrestrained laughter, everyone was mired in grief.
It was already late at night by the time Zhang Bei returned home. After a quick wash, he sat down on his bed and made a call.
Heizi’s cautious voice came through the phone. “Hello?”
Zhang Bei’s tone was chilling. “Heizi, I think you and I need to have a serious talk.”
“Well, uh… I’ve got something to take care of. Let’s talk next time!”
“Do you think I can’t find you?”
“Come on, bro! Have mercy on me!”
A faint smile appeared on Zhang Bei’s face. “The higher-ups came to see me today.”
Heizi immediately panicked.
“What the hell happened?”
“I’m guessing they’re about to put out a warrant for you.”
Sitting in his office, Heizi broke out in a cold sweat the moment he heard that.
“Wait, what the hell did I do?”
Hearing the anxiety in his voice, Zhang Bei burst out laughing.
“Why didn’t you think about the consequences when you were poaching their people?”
“It was only a few people! Is that really necessary?”
“Enjoy what little time you have left.”
Heizi fell silent for a long while before speaking again.
“Is it too late for me to run?”
“Way too late. Get your affairs in order and prepare for your funeral.”
Instead of panicking, Heizi breathed a sigh of relief.
They had been brothers for years. If he were truly in danger, he firmly believed Zhang Bei would never abandon him.
“Quit trying to scare me. What is this really about?”
“Two things. First, no more poaching people.”
Heizi flushed as he sat in his office. The security company had only just gotten off the ground, and he didn’t trust those foreigners.
The best solution had been to poach experienced personnel directly.
“Don’t worry. I won’t poach anyone else. What’s the second thing?”
“It’s good news. The higher-ups will hold an exercise in a month as a show of force in support of the Island.”
“Really?”
“Why would I lie to you?”
“Holy shit, Brother Bei! You’re incredible!”
“Don’t celebrate yet. The Island’s defense system needs to be established as quickly as possible.”
“Don’t worry. There definitely won’t be any problems on my end!”
Zhang Bei rubbed his chin. “Now explain to me exactly what’s going on with the security company.”
“This really isn’t my fault…”
Despite his even tone, Heizi gave Zhang Bei a full account of how the security company had come to be.
The original plan had indeed been to recruit only a group of security personnel.
But people from Huaxia faced far too much discrimination overseas. The moment Demon Court was founded, they began flocking to it.
In just one week, Demon Court formed over a hundred squads.
Although they manufactured their own weapons, their sheer numbers still drove expenses through the roof.
Besides, most people in the mercenary business could never remain quietly in one place.
Left with no other choice, Heizi had to let them start taking on contracts.
The way people from Huaxia banded together made Demon Court a target from the very beginning.
Heizi had originally been prepared to operate at a loss, but to his surprise, those people soon began stopping at nothing to crush Demon Court.
Once they pushed him too far, Heizi simply started poaching personnel from back home. In the span of a single month, Demon Court became the world’s third-largest security company.
After hearing the whole story, Zhang Bei felt a headache coming on.
Demon Court Security had now become a true behemoth.
Countless people depended on it for their livelihoods, and countless fates had become tied to this warship.
This wasn’t something that could simply be brought to a halt. Even the smallest mistake could cost countless lives.
Zhang Bei pondered for a long time before finally speaking.
“You can handle the security company’s expansion. Just stay away from gambling and drugs.”
“Don’t worry!”
“One more thing. Pick out fifty of your best men for me. I have an important use for them.”
“Got it!”
After hanging up, Zhang Bei finally lay down and drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, the Amusement Park opened its gates as usual.
This time, however, it wasn’t tourists at the front of the line, but Kunpeng Squad.
“Boss!”
Zhang Bei nodded at the five men standing in perfect formation.
“Come on in.”
The Commanding Officer followed behind Zhang Bei, carrying a combination-lock case.
The other four squad members watched the two of them curiously as they walked ahead.
“So that’s our boss?”
“Must be. I didn’t expect him to be so young!”
“Brother Bing lost yesterday, didn’t he?”
“Shh! Don’t let him hear you. I don’t want extra training!”
They kept their voices low-at least, not loud enough for the two men ahead to hear.
Zhang Bei led the Commanding Officer all the way to the Monitoring Room.
“What did you need to escort here personally?”
“The Laboratory’s construction blueprints and a list of names.”
The Commanding Officer set the case on the table, then stepped aside.
Zhang Bei immediately understood Heizi’s intentions.
The Laboratory was the heart of the Island, so its blueprints were naturally of paramount importance.
Sending them by email or courier would leave too many opportunities for something to go wrong.
Having someone escort them all the way here was the safest option.
“Leave the case here. What’s your name?”
“Cha Bing, Captain of Kunpeng Squad!”
“Cha Bing, I have a mission for you.”
“Yes, sir!”
“Take your men and try out two attractions!”
“Huh?”
“What are you gawking for? Get going!”
“Yes, sir!”
As Zhang Bei watched Cha Bing leave, he rubbed his hands together gleefully and quickly pulled up the surveillance feed.
Everyone knew Boss Zhang was the type to hold a grudge.
Most of the time, he settled his scores on the spot. But if the opportunity didn’t present itself, Boss Zhang would quietly file the grievance away for later.
There was no way he had forgotten how Cha Bing and his men had hunted him down yesterday.
Completely oblivious, Cha Bing led his four squad members over to the Roller Coaster.
“This is a mission from the boss. We’ll try two attractions, then report to President Qiu!”
“Yes, sir!”
As the first group of visitors that morning, they were soon seated on the Roller Coaster.
Cha Bing looked down at the safety belt locked securely across his waist and couldn’t help sighing inwardly.
The boss was much kinder than President Qiu!
All he’d done back then was play a little prank on President Qiu, yet the entire Kunpeng Squad had been dumped on a godforsaken deserted island and forced to survive.
But look at the boss! They had fought only yesterday, and today he was already inviting Cha Bing to enjoy the rides!
The other squad members were equally excited, their eyes brimming with anticipation.
Before long, the Roller Coaster began its first run of the morning.
As the wind swept across his face, Cha Bing relaxed completely.
“Captain, once we get back, we should have enough points to redeem an Electromagnetic Cannon, right?”
Cha Bing tallied up their mission points and nodded. “We have enough. Once we get the Electromagnetic Cannon, we’ll be able to accept some of those missions.”
“Captain, let me have fun with it for a few days!”
“Captain, I want a few days with it too!”
Cha Bing’s face darkened. “Like hell! Do you have any idea how expensive its batteries are?”
At the Demon Court, squads earned points by completing missions. Once they accumulated enough, they could redeem those points for all kinds of weapons.
The best among them was naturally the Electromagnetic Cannon. Its ability to take out a tank with a single shot spoke for itself.
But its power consumption was equally staggering.
Even the batteries they’d developed in-house held enough charge for only three shots.
