Chapter 260
Chapter 260
“Can you guarantee it’s secure?”
To ensure its security, the Laboratory had never been connected to a network since the day it was established.
Now, however, there was no need to worry about attacks anymore.
In the realm of computing, a human could never defeat an artificial intelligence.
“Don’t worry. You’ll understand once you’re connected.”
“All right, Boss!”
Guan Guo put down his phone and looked at his assistant. “Go turn on the network switch.”
“Yes!”
Since its establishment, the Laboratory on the Island had grown beyond the lonely trio it once housed.
After all, poaching talent had always been a tradition. Guan Guo could hardly be incapable of it.
Through considerable effort, Guan Guo had successfully talked several academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences into coming to the Island.
And those academicians hadn’t come alone. They had brought two research teams with them.
The Island was now positively brimming with talent.
The moment the network switch was turned on, alarms rang throughout the Laboratory.
But just two seconds later, the alarms vanished completely.
Arthur’s mechanical voice sounded from a computer in the Laboratory.
“Hello, Professor Guan. I am the artificial intelligence Arthur. All 1,532 attacks in this wave have been intercepted. Would you like me to retaliate?”
Hearing the voice from the computer, Guan Guo froze.
The Island’s technology was twenty years ahead of the rest of the world.
But who could have imagined that Boss Zhang would even produce an artificial intelligence?
With artificial intelligence, the Island’s entire defensive system was finally complete.
“Hello, Arthur. Did the boss send you?”
“Yes. I will serve as the spacecraft’s central control system.”
As Guan Guo listened to the voice, his eyes filled with disbelief.
When he first came to the Island, Boss Zhang had said he intended to send visitors into space.
Who could have imagined that day would arrive so quickly?
With a central control system and Nuclear Fusion as an energy source, all that remained before they could reach space was to design the spacecraft itself.
After a long silence, Guan Guo asked, “Boss, do you have any ideas for the spacecraft’s design?”
“Handle it yourselves. I have only one requirement: make sure it’s big enough!”
“Why?”
Guan Guo found it hard to understand what Zhang Bei meant.
The smaller a spacecraft was, the less thrust it needed, and the less likely things were to go wrong.
“If it’s not big, how am I supposed to send more visitors into space at once?”
“You’re serious?”
“Of course. Have the visitors build our Moon base for us. What’s not to like?”
Mixed emotions crossed Guan Guo’s face. Probably nobody but his boss could do something like this.
Visitors would pay to go to the Moon, then have to work under the oppression of a heartless boss.
This was the legendary pinnacle of capitalism!
Make employees spend their own money to work for the boss!
“I’ll produce a spacecraft proposal as soon as possible. Should we notify the higher-ups?”
“No need. Arthur will stay on the Island for now to assist you.”
“All right!”
“Oh, and workers will be coming to the Island today. Don’t stop them.”
“No problem.”
Zhang Bei hung up and gave the System an order.
“Construction of Zootopia can begin.”
Watching the System carry out the command, Zhang Bei let out a long sigh.
He really missed the System from long ago, when it gave him a mission every few days.
Who could have imagined the stupid thing would manage to starve itself to death?
Pitiful. Tragic.
Time passed. Meng Chuan appeared at the Amusement Park’s entrance with dark circles under both eyes.
He scanned the area and soon found Boss Zhang lounging comfortably in his reclining chair.
Thinking of his own frantic round of meetings over the past few days, then looking at his boss’s life of idleness, he felt malice rise in his heart and anger lend him courage.
“Are you sure you can beat him?”
“Don’t worry. I came back this time for revenge!”
Meng Chuan exhaled, his gaze growing resolute.
He had picked this man up outside the Amusement Park. On learning that he was Boss Zhang’s secretary, the fellow had looked ready to eat someone alive.
Meng Chuan was curious about the deep grudge between them, but as they talked, he stopped caring about the details.
At last, someone wanted to put his boss in his place. He absolutely couldn’t miss this chance.
The two walked up to Zhang Bei.
Holding a stack of A4 papers, Meng Chuan wore a serious expression.
“I’m here to report on work: some of the strategic conference’s contents, plus progress on the factory and satellite development.”
“Just email it. I’ll read it.”
Meng Chuan felt his temples throb.
Email it?
To think I’d actually believed your fucking bullshit!
If I haven’t sent you eighty emails, I’ve sent at least fifty!
Every one of them was a carefully prepared work plan!
And the result? This heartless boss hadn’t read a single one!
He had now decided that, from this day forward, he would deliver every work report in person.
No matter how busy he was, he would come at least once a week!
Of course, under today’s circumstances, the work report could wait a little.
“I’m counting on you!”
The man beside him nodded, and his murderous aura instantly surged to its peak.
Zhang Bei lifted his eyelids slightly. “You can’t beat me.”
He remembered this man: the bodyguard his own employer had knocked unconscious.
The man might be radiating formidable pressure now, but he was still not someone professionally trained in martial arts.
Even so, he had reached a level that warranted Zhang Bei taking him seriously.
The bodyguard opened the fight with a side kick.
Zhang Bei blocked it with one hand and sent a punch straight at his face.
After that, the fight became a one-sided slaughter.
Boss Zhang was, after all, still some distance from being human.
Defeating him while remaining within human limits was rather difficult.
After kicking the bodyguard away, Zhang Bei turned a smiling face toward Meng Chuan.
Looking at the bodyguard sprawled on the ground, Meng Chuan forced out a smile.
“Boss, would you believe me if I said I didn’t know him?”
Zhang Bei placed a hand on Meng Chuan’s shoulder.
“Roller Coaster or Underground Maze. Pick one.”
Meng Chuan took a deep breath. “I want the Ski Resort!”
Since he had to suffer today, choosing a sport he knew would at least give him a slim chance of survival.
Zhang Bei nodded. “Go on, then.”
Meng Chuan sighed deeply, silently cursing his heartless boss to die in an accident one day.
He was just a secretary, yet he had to attend high-level conferences and manage a whole range of work.
Even after all that, his boss still insisted on squeezing him dry!
Having dealt with one, Zhang Bei walked over to the bodyguard.
“Same for you. Pick one yourself.”
The bodyguard’s face was full of worry. He was clearly very strong now.
His strength had increased at least twofold since before.
And even so, he hadn’t beaten a scientist?
“I’ll go to the Ski Resort too!”
Watching Meng Chuan’s retreating figure, the bodyguard started after him.
Zhang Bei watched them leave, then turned and lay back in his chair.
As the greatest villain in this book, Boss Zhang’s character was surely familiar to everyone by now.
And so, before the pair had reached the Ski Resort, Zhang Bei pressed the button on his walkie-talkie.
