Chapter 57
Chapter 57
The scene returned to the amusement park, following the baptism of the Giant Swing and the Roller Coaster.
The two civil servants who had come for the inspection were now completely slumped in the Morgue.
“Brother, I want to retire.”
“Me too.”
Those two short sentences expressed an endless amount of bitterness.
However, their task for the day was essentially complete.
Basically, none of the facilities posed any safety hazards.
The pricing was quite reasonable, and even the popcorn and drinks on the side were all homemade.
As time ticked by, Zhang Bei saw off the last of the day’s tourists and stretched his arms.
With the Amusement Park’s development reaching this stage, the staff had all become quite proficient.
Zhang Bei planned to start making some adjustments in the near future.
He intended to focus most of his attention on promotion.
Just as he was about to lock the main gate, a police car screeched to a halt at the entrance of the Amusement Park.
A burly man strode over and stopped Zhang Bei.
“Hello, are you Zhang Bei?”
“That’s me. What’s the matter?”
“Are there no tourists in the amusement park right now?”
“None. Only my own employees.”
The man visibly relaxed and waved to the people behind him.
“It’s like this: we are currently pursuing a fugitive, and he just entered the Amusement Park.”
Zhang Bei’s expression tightened. Fortunately, the Amusement Park was already closed.
Otherwise, a desperate criminal would almost certainly have taken hostages.
Zhang Bei stepped aside to let the group of officers who had caught up enter.
“Can I ask about the specifics?”
The man thought for a moment. This was Zhang Bei’s territory, after all.
To capture this fugitive, they would likely need Zhang Bei’s help.
“The situation is that this fugitive escaped while being transported to prison.”
Zhang Bei nodded. “You’ve been chasing him the whole way?”
“Yes. This person is extremely cunning; our men have already lost him twice.”
The man’s face reddened slightly as he spoke.
It was indeed a bit embarrassing for a group of police officers to be unable to catch a single fugitive for so long.
Zhang Bei pointed toward the nearby Monitoring Room. “I have full surveillance coverage here. Should we check the footage first?”
“Alright, then we’ll have to trouble you, Boss Zhang!”
Leading the officers into the Monitoring Room, Zhang Bei pulled up the recordings from the last few hours.
Under the gaze of a dozen pairs of eyes, a handcuffed figure appeared on the screen.
“That’s him!”
Zhang Bei nodded and adjusted the cameras to follow the fugitive’s path.
Seeing the final place the fugitive entered, Zhang Bei’s mouth twitched.
The Underground Maze!
Zhang Bei hadn’t expected the fugitive to walk into a dead end like the Underground Maze.
Since the Amusement Park had just closed, the power to the facilities hadn’t been shut off yet, so they were naturally still operational.
Zhang Bei picked up the walkie-talkie on the desk. “Li Yang, organize the staff and head to the restaurant. No one is allowed to wander around.”
“Boss, what happened?”
“A fugitive ran into the Underground Maze. I’m taking the police to corner him.”
“A fugitive?”
“Yeah. Stay in the restaurant and don’t wander off.”
“Got it!”
Having dealt with the staff, Zhang Bei quickly located the fugitive on the Underground Maze’s cameras.
On the monitor, the fugitive put on a pair of glasses and scanned the corridor in front of him.
He wasn’t very educated, but he knew that the best way to lose the police was to find somewhere with a complex layout.
But after entering, he realized that this was a damn Maze.
It was probably too late to leave now; he could only try to find the exit of the Maze.
Looking at the glasses that had been placed in a box, it was obvious they were meant to be used for navigating the route.
Wearing his glasses, the fugitive randomly chose a corridor and stepped inside.
As he looked at the passage ahead, his expression gradually grew solemn. The corridor was extremely dim; he had to focus his gaze intensely just to see the path in front of him.
Suddenly, a blood-red figure flashed past him.
Cold sweat immediately broke out on the fugitive’s forehead.
“Holy crap, what the hell was that?”
However, bolstered by his formidable courage, the fugitive continued walking forward. Just as he rounded a corner, the blood-red figure appeared once more under the dim lighting.
This time, it was no longer a blurry red shape. The figure was clearly a mangled, bloody silhouette of a person.
The figure vanished in an instant. The fugitive wiped the sweat from his brow and quickened his pace.
In the Monitoring Room, several police officers watched the fugitive’s increasingly nervous movements on the monitors and grew restless.
“Boss Zhang, let’s go grab him now!”
Zhang Bei pondered for a moment. “How about we wait a bit? The Maze takes half an hour. Let’s wait for him at the exit when he’s almost out.”
The path the fugitive had taken was of medium-high difficulty. Even if he could clear it, they could still corner him at the exit.
The officers looked at each other and settled down to wait.
Regardless, now that he had entered such a place, he wouldn’t be able to escape even if he grew wings.
The fugitive nervously made his way through the first half of the journey. He frowned when he saw a stone gate blocking his path.
“Why does this Maze even have a Dragon-Breaking Stone?”
Inside the Monitoring Room, Zhang Bei also heard the voice.
“What crime did he commit?”
“Grave robbing and smuggling cultural relics.”
Hearing this, Zhang Bei’s eyes suddenly lit up. If it was someone like this, they might actually be able to clear the Maze!
Meanwhile, the fugitive inside the Underground Maze felt his scalp go numb. Just after bypassing the Dragon-Breaking Stone, rows of withered skeletons lying side by side appeared before his eyes.
Seeing the scene in front of him, the fugitive froze in place.
“What the hell? A Dragon-Breaking Stone and a path paved with bones? What kind of godforsaken place is this!”
Having worked in the grave-robbing industry for many years, he had never seen such an eerie place. He stood there for a full two minutes before his trembling feet finally moved forward.
“Hehehe…”
An eerie laugh rang out in his ear. The fugitive stiffly turned his neck. A Red-Bibbed Child appeared behind him, only to vanish in the blink of an eye.
The fugitive swallowed hard, his legs already feeling weak.
No matter how large a tomb was, the only real dangers were the mechanical traps. There were never any ghosts or monsters; the tomb owners had long since rotted into a pile of refuse.
But the scene unfolding before him made the fugitive begin to doubt his life.
*Have all the tombs I’ve robbed over the years been fake?*
*Is the owner of this amusement park trying to cover something up by building this Maze?*
*Did I accidentally discover some great secret of the amusement park?*
However, the fugitive no longer had the mental capacity to keep thinking. The row of skeletons he had just passed began to wobble and gradually stood up.
And standing in front of this group of skeletons was the Red-Bibbed Little Boy who had disappeared earlier.
Witnessing this scene that defied common sense, the fugitive’s eyes rolled back, and he fainted on the spot.
Zhang Bei looked at the man on the monitor and fell silent.
Aren’t grave robbers supposed to be full of extraordinary skills? Aren’t they supposed to be experts in geomancy and tomb-finding? How did he just faint like that?
The police officers beside him also looked dazed. “What happened to him?”
“He fainted. I’ll take you in to carry him out.”
“Uh, okay. Then we’ll have to trouble you, Boss Zhang!”
