Chapter 231
Chapter 231
The moment Heizi heard the alarm, his face darkened.
“They actually dared to come!”
A cold glint flashed through Zhang Bei’s eyes. “What are you planning to do?”
Heizi patted the deck gun mounted beside him. “We haven’t tested how powerful this thing is yet!”
Zhang Bei stretched lazily. “Can you tell who they are?”
Heizi glanced down at the tablet in his hand.
“Mercenaries. They’re probably here for you.”
Most mercenaries had an organization backing them.
Back then, Heizi had used thirty Electromagnetic Cannon units to flatten a rebel base, firmly establishing his reputation.
By now, every organization-backed mercenary knew that the Demon Court was not to be provoked.
None of them would dare cause trouble at a time like this.
With those people ruled out, the only ones left were mercenaries who operated independently.
Most of them worked for shady organizations that couldn’t afford to show themselves in public.
Clearly, that was the kind of group approaching them now.
After adjusting the deck gun’s position, Heizi glanced at Li Yang, who was huddled off to one side.
“Want to shoot one off?”
Li Yang looked almost bashful. “Can I?”
“It’s just one shot. Come on!”
Excitement gleamed in Li Yang’s eyes as he sat down at the deck gun’s controls.
Standing beside him, Heizi began giving instructions.
“See that display in front of you? Those red dots are the enemy.”
Li Yang gripped the control stick and quickly lined the crosshairs up with one of the red dots.
The instant he pulled the trigger, a thick beam of blue light lanced out. A towering plume of water erupted from the distant sea.
Mixed in with the spray were chunks of steel flying in every direction.
The excitement in Li Yang’s eyes intensified.
Years of gaming experience allowed him to adapt to the controls in no time at all.
He hammered the trigger, and countless pieces of twisted steel appeared across the surface before slowly sinking to the bottom of the sea.
Not a single shot missed!
Everyone fell silent as they watched Li Yang get completely carried away.
What the hell was wrong with this guy?
Wasn’t this his first time operating a deck gun?
How could he possibly be this good already?!
Under Li Yang’s rapid barrage, every last red dot vanished from the display.
The mercenaries standing by with their Electromagnetic Cannon units said nothing.
What the hell were they even here for?
This kid practically had the firepower of an entire division all by himself!
Seeing everyone stare at him, Li Yang awkwardly rubbed his nose.
“Um… What’s wrong?”
Heizi’s eyes were practically glowing green.
“Your name’s Li Yang, right? Interested in experiencing life as a mercenary?”
Heizi spoke at top speed, appearing beside Li Yang almost instantly.
“I’ll guarantee you a base salary of ten thousand, plus a thirty-percent cut from every job!”
Heizi was just about to drag Li Yang off for a long heart-to-heart when a hand seized him by the collar, and his fate along with it.
“Have you lost your mind? You’re even trying to poach my people now?”
A chill swept over Heizi, instantly cooling his fevered brain.
“No, wait! Let me explain!”
Gazing out at the sea, which had returned to calm, Zhang Bei casually flung him one-handed.
Heizi vanished from the deck in an instant, and another huge splash erupted from the water.
Five minutes later, Heizi was squatting in a corner and drying himself off while shooting Zhang Bei resentful looks.
The ship sped across the sea. Zhang Bei found a four-piece bedding set in the cabin, carried it onto the deck, and settled down to enjoy the peace and quiet.
Professor Li crouched in front of the deck gun, the pen in his hand moving rapidly.
Thanks to Li Yang’s handiwork, the ship reached a harbor without further incident.
Heizi draped his coat over his shoulders and was the first to disembark.
Zhang Bei followed close behind, his eyes gleaming as he gazed at the Island that belonged to him.
As long as nothing went wrong here, it wouldn’t be long before his dream of sending tourists into space became a reality.
Just imagining the joy of dumping tourists on the Moon made Zhang Bei impatient to get started.
Guan Guo stood waiting with a group of people arranged in two orderly lines.
“Welcome, Boss!”
“How is the Biological Gene Tracing Technology coming along?”
Guan Guo’s expression stiffened. Did he have to ask about work right now?
Couldn’t they sit down and chat first?
Capitalists were all black-hearted! (Camel Lao Xiang.)
After a brief silence, Guan Guo gave him an honest progress report.
“We’ve managed to trace genes as far back as five hundred thousand years ago. Using the fossils Secretary Meng brought us, we’ve successfully bred two hog deer.”
“Where are they?”
Guan Guo pointed at an area enclosed by wire fencing nearby.
“Would you like to see them?”
“Sure!”
Zhang Bei followed Guan Guo through the gate in the wire fence.
Inside, two hog deer were happily soaking in a pond half a meter deep.
Professor Li, who was standing at the back of the group, froze at the sight.
Holy shit. Weren’t these things extinct?
Where the hell had they gotten them from?
If they could bring something like this back, then dinosaurs couldn’t be far behind, could they?
Hog deer had short, stubby legs, rear ends that looked remarkably like a corgi’s, and an overall build similar to a pig’s.
The two they had bred were still small juveniles. They looked just like oversized corgis.
Guan Guo clapped his hands, and the two hog deer came bounding over, their rumps swaying from side to side.
“As you instructed, Boss, we used gene-editing technology to ensure they’ll never be capable of harming humans.”
Zhang Bei nodded and casually rubbed one of the hog deer’s heads.
“How did the giant panda genes turn out?”
Guan Guo hesitated for a moment. “We did succeed, but there’s a slight problem with the two we bred. They didn’t turn out quite as expected.”
“Hmm?”
“You’ll understand as soon as you see them.”
Guan Guo led the way until they soon arrived at a bamboo grove.
He pushed open a glass door, revealing two plump, round pandas.
Although they were also cubs, neither of them could exactly be called small.
But the moment the two pandas raised their heads, Zhang Bei burst out laughing.
A panda’s eyes weren’t particularly large to begin with, but their black eye patches usually made that hard to notice.
These two, however, had no black eye patches at all. Even their ears were white!
They looked like two enormous balls of cotton with a pair of black dots stuck on top.
Laughter erupted from every direction.
A faint blush crept across Guan Guo’s face.
This really wasn’t his fault. Who could have guessed that biological cloning this advanced would still have to follow the original specimen’s recessive genes?
That was right. The panda fossil Meng Chuan had brought back had belonged to a panda with an entirely white head.
Although Guan Guo had promptly corrected the genetic defect, they couldn’t simply dispose of the two panda cubs that had already been born because of the accident.
They looked different from normal pandas, and goofy as hell, but that didn’t stop everyone from crowding around to pet and squish them.
They belonged to them, after all!
They could play with them however they wanted!
Watching Heizi hug a panda under each arm, Zhang Bei couldn’t help sighing.
“You’ve been here for so long. Aren’t you tired of playing with them yet?”
“Bullshit! Ask those people standing next to you. They never let me into the experimental area!”
Guan Guo scratched his head. “The last time President Qiu came in, he broke three instruments while playing around, so we revoked his access privileges.”
