Chapter 189
Chapter 189
The doctor stared at the cart he had just wiped clean and fell silent for a long time.
In the end, he let out a long sigh and trudged up the snowy path.
I’m done. Let it all burn.
Why is it so hard to just finish my shift?
Meanwhile, in the Capital, two elderly men in military uniforms sat in front of a computer.
One had a head of snowy white hair and an imposing presence.
The other looked mild and composed, but the killing intent in his eyes was almost tangible.
No. 2 rubbed the few hairs remaining on his head. “That kid’s as stubborn as a mule. There’s no chance of getting him to come back now.”
The murderous-looking old man nodded in deep agreement. “Those useless bastards can’t do a damn thing except drive talent away!”
The white-haired old man gritted his teeth.
“I really want to put a bullet through every last one of those sons of bitches.”
The two voices rose one after another, growing increasingly agitated.
Then a third, steady voice came from the computer.
“I’ll raise this matter at a later meeting. The problem right now is how to convince that young man to continue working with us.”
“What if I take some men and drag him back?”
“I bet he’d run off to that little island of his the very next day.”
“Then what do we do? Offer him money?”
The voice from the computer paused. “Forget money and honors. The kid has no shortage of either.”
At that, they all felt a headache coming on.
Researchers generally cared about one of three things.
Money, honors, or fame.
But according to the psychologists’ assessment, this kid genuinely didn’t seem to care about anything.
His only weakness was the Amusement Park, and that was the one thing they absolutely couldn’t touch.
If they went after the Amusement Park, there truly would be no room left for reconciliation.
Silence hung in the air for a long time.
The white-haired old man spoke first. “A honey trap?”
“No use. He already has plenty of beautiful women on his staff.”
“A sympathy play?”
“No use. He’d laugh in our faces.”
“For fuck’s sake!”
Neither the carrot nor the stick worked on him!
The three old men, whose combined ages were nearly two hundred, were completely helpless against him.
The white-haired old man let out a long sigh. “I’ll meet him in private. This old face of mine should still count for something.”
“The doctors won’t let you leave. Forget it.”
“I’ll take a private plane. It won’t take long.”
“Absolutely not!”
“Damn it! Which is more important, this useless old bag of bones or a genius capable of taking us to an entirely new level?”
His agitated shout was immediately followed by a violent coughing fit.
He was already eighty. The wounds he had sustained on the battlefield all those years ago had taken far too great a toll on him.
He now spent most of his time recuperating in the hospital, and even his excursions were subject to strict limits.
Flying to another city in his current condition could easily cost him his life if anything went wrong.
The voice from the computer fell silent for a long time. “I’ll make the arrangements. Meet him tomorrow afternoon, then come back as soon as you can.”
“Cough… All right. Cough, cough…”
The night passed uneventfully.
The next morning, still unaware of what awaited him, Zhang Bei opened the gates to the Amusement Park as usual.
This time, however, the two people waiting out front weren’t regular visitors, but a man and a woman.
“Boss!”
They called out in perfect unison.
They were the two lifeguards assigned to the Swimming Pool, which had yet to open.
The man’s name was Shi Ang, and the woman’s was Cong Hongdou. Their best results in competition had both been second place.
That did lower the Amusement Park’s average somewhat, but it was more than good enough for lifeguard duty.
Zhang Bei’s eyes lit up when he saw them. “Have you finished dealing with everything?”
“It’s all taken care of!”
“Come on. I’ll show you around!”
Zhang Bei led the two of them into the Amusement Park. When he saw Li Yang waiting nearby, fully prepared, a smile spread across his face.
“They’re the new safety officers for the Swimming Pool. Show them our tradition.”
“You got it, Boss!”
Li Yang was probably the employee most familiar with the Amusement Park.
He had personally tried just about every attraction in the entire Amusement Park.
And when it came to tradition, Li Yang followed it to the letter!
After watching Zhang Bei disappear into the distance, Li Yang immediately put on an honest, good-natured smile.
“You might not know this, but the boss says Amusement Park employees aren’t allowed to start work until they’ve personally tried the attractions and gotten to know them!”
Shi Ang returned his smile. “Then we’ll be counting on you.”
“No trouble at all. I’m Li Yang. See anything you’d like to try?”
Shi Ang looked around carefully. There were already plenty of visitors lined up in front of most of the attractions.
Since it was their first day on the job, it was probably best not to compete with the visitors for a spot.
“The Giant Swing doesn’t seem too crowded. How about that one?”
Cong Hongdou glanced at it. “Fine by me.”
Li Yang led them all the way to the Giant Swing.
Professor Yao gave Li Yang a long, meaningful look.
“New employees?”
“Yeah. The boss said to let them experience the tradition.”
“Then hurry up and get on!”
Only after the two of them had put on protective suits and fastened their safety restraints did Professor Yao break into a smile.
“They’re from the Swimming Pool?”
Li Yang sighed. “Yeah. That’s the most boring place in the park.”
He wasn’t wrong. Since the Amusement Park already had diving facilities, Zhang Bei hadn’t put many special features into the Swimming Pool.
Besides, if a safety officer failed to react in time in a place like that, the risk of drowning would be far too high.
It really wasn’t suitable for any unusual designs.
Shi Ang turned his head and smiled as he watched the Giant Swing gradually fill up.
“I never expected to find such an easy job right after retiring!”
Cong Hongdou felt the same way. “We got lucky.”
The two chatted away, full of hope for their future lives.
The Giant Swing slowly started moving. As its circular motion gradually accelerated, Shi Ang relaxed.
Watching the endless stream of visitors, he felt a quiet sense of anticipation rise within him.
The money he had earned over seven years as an athlete had been enough to buy an apartment in Dingyang City, where housing prices weren’t particularly high.
But that was all. He couldn’t squeeze out another penny.
Now, this stable job had given Shi Ang something to look forward to.
He dreamed of driving a nice car next year and of someday having a chance encounter with the love of his life.
The violent roar of the wind shattered his thoughts.
At some point, the Giant Swing had begun moving faster and faster. The ground and sky rapidly traded places before his eyes.
It was obvious that they were much higher off the ground than when the ride had first started!
“Wh-What’s happening?”
But no one answered him.
With a mechanical clunk, the Giant Swing suddenly launched its passengers into the sky.
The wind howled, and their protective suits snapped and flapped around them.
Li Yang’s honest, good-natured smile involuntarily surfaced in Shi Ang’s mind.
Fuck!
This was what they called tradition?
What kind of tradition involved launching employees into the sky?
The view from a hundred meters in the air lasted for only an instant before gravity sent Shi Ang plummeting toward the ground.
Adrenaline flooded his body!
In that brief instant, Shi Ang had already composed his final words.
But the gruesome scene he’d imagined-being splattered into meat paste-never came. The Giant Swing returned safely to its track.
“Holy shit! That scared me to-to-to…”
Before he could even finish, the Giant Swing accelerated and launched into the sky once again.
