Chapter 262
Chapter 262
Having barely escaped with his life, Meng Chuan had just breathed a sigh of relief when a furious roar came from far ahead.
“Zhang Bei, you bleep, bleep, bleep!”
An exceptionally high concentration of mother-related insults!
After that cry, the whole world seemed to fall silent.
Meng Chuan swallowed. It was hard to imagine what had happened up ahead.
What on earth could make a battle-hardened soldier let out such a despairing roar?
But he had to keep going. He could already make out his pursuers behind him.
After that explosive burst of hidden strength, Meng Chuan’s legs were now weak.
All he could do was maintain a steady speed and keep heading forward.
As he continued, he soon spotted the bodyguard.
He lay in the snow, alive or dead Meng Chuan couldn’t tell.
After a moment’s hesitation, Meng Chuan steered his snowboard a little closer.
If the man was alive, at least he could find out something.
If he was dead, at least Meng Chuan could see what had killed him.
Before he could draw near, a buzzing reached his ears.
It sounded like a swarm of bees. In fact, they were dragonflies.
More precisely, they were the extinct giant dragonflies known as Meganeura.
With a wingspan of about sixty centimeters, Meganeura was nothing like today’s harmless dragonflies.
Its mouthparts could easily tear through the hide of any prey.
Human skin would be nothing to it.
More importantly, these things ate meat!
Meng Chuan was close to the bodyguard now. He was certain the man was still alive.
But the buzzing behind him made Meng Chuan reach an eminently sensible decision.
Run!
As for the bodyguard?
Sorry, brother. It’s not that I don’t want to save you!
Lying there, you can at least draw some of their attention for me!
And so Meng Chuan spent a fraction of a second feeling guilty, then devoted every remaining moment to accelerating.
No matter how fast a snowboard was, though, it couldn’t outrun wings.
Especially not those of a carnivore like Meganeura.
Within one short minute, countless shadows engulfed Meng Chuan.
As Meng Chuan felt something touch his skin, overwhelming fear instantly spread through his heart.
It was humanity’s instinctive fear of death.
“Zhang Bei, you bleep, bleep, bleep!”
The roar echoed along the entire snow run. Predictably, Meng Chuan collapsed in the snow.
An employee emerged from a corner nearby, pulling one of the Sleds.
The employee shuddered as they watched the dragonflies fly away.
Quickly securing Meng Chuan to the Sled, they raced ahead.
Look closely at the deserted snow run.
One person stood on a board pulling a Sled, with two figures of uncertain fate attached to the rope behind them.
The scene formed a strangely harmonious picture.
An hour later, Meng Chuan stood shivering in front of Zhang Bei.
“Boss, your satellite base is now complete. The first batch of Suxiao Jiuxin Wan will arrive this afternoon.”
“The Suxiao Jiuxin Wan is ready to use?”
As usual, Zhang Bei skipped over the unimportant details and focused entirely on Suxiao Jiuxin Wan.
He had been waiting for it for so long. At last, it was usable.
“Yes. It’s passed the pharmaceutical testing.”
A flash of joy that ordinary people would struggle to understand passed through Zhang Bei’s eyes.
With the extra-strength Suxiao Jiuxin Wan ready to use, visitors could experience yet another level of happiness.
Meng Chuan put down the first sheet of A4 paper and began a detailed report on the recent work.
“The Island’s defensive system is complete. We’ve purchased all the rights to the fantasy creatures you wanted…”
For a full hour, Zhang Bei yawned and stared at Meng Chuan as though he wanted to eat him alive.
How had he failed to notice that his secretary was such a chatterbox?
He had absolutely no interest in any of that nonsense!
Just decide for yourself!
Strategic conferences on Nuclear Fusion construction – wasn’t all that your business?
What the hell did it have to do with me?
Still, this man was making money for him, after all. Not to mention handling all the miscellaneous affairs.
And so Zhang Bei endured an entire hour of torment.
Meng Chuan put down the last sheet of A4 paper.
“That’s the general situation. The flight routes should be finalized tomorrow, and then our own plane will be ready to use.”
Zhang Bei nodded numbly. “If there’s nothing else, get back to work. You don’t need to come to the Amusement Park for a while.”
“All right. I’ll come back next week to report.”
With that, Meng Chuan headed out of the Amusement Park.
It had been extremely difficult for him to free up even one morning.
That afternoon, he would fly to the next country for another meeting that evening.
For the next two weeks, he would be traveling all over Asia by plane.
Of course, Meng Chuan had set aside a few hours every week for his work report.
Zhang Bei stretched in his reclining chair and went back to enjoying the visitors’ screams.
That afternoon, a small truck stopped at the Amusement Park’s entrance.
Zhang Bei led the employees in unloading a truckload of Suxiao Jiuxin Wan.
From today onward, visitors to the Underground Maze would either experience the complete storyline or wait until their time was up and walk out through the designated passage.
Professor Yao opened a box and studied the little pills inside.
“This stuff can really bring someone around in five minutes?”
Zhang Bei nodded. “New formula. They’ll definitely wake up in five minutes.”
A strange light flickered in the eyes of the doctor standing nearby.
Did this mean… perhaps… his workload would plummet starting today?
Previously, he had needed to collect a cartload of people from the Underground Maze roughly every ten minutes.
Now, once they were given Suxiao Jiuxin Wan, he could wait for the visitors to walk out on their own.
He might even be able to wait until the end and finish with a single cart trip.
The afternoon continued as usual, yet it wasn’t quite ordinary.
The Amusement Park welcomed two visitors who had not been seen in some time.
The stout Meng Xuan and the thin Zhou Hui, both professional testers who slept in stigmatized homes, appeared before the Underground Maze with pale faces.
Life had not been easy for them lately.
A stigmatized home was not called that simply because someone had died there.
Sometimes, strange things happened too.
Most, however, were caused by some kind of coincidence.
But one experience at the Amusement Park had left both men jumping at shadows while they worked.
As Meng Xuan looked at the place where his nightmare had begun, a trace of fear passed through his eyes.
“Are we really going in?”
Zhou Hui gritted his teeth. “As that great man once said, the way to eliminate fear is to face it!”
“Have you forgotten what happened in that residential building last time?”
“No. But only by clearing this place can we get back to how we used to be.”
Uncertain about the future, the two entered the Underground Maze.
They put on the glasses with practiced ease. Looking at the passage before them, Zhou Hui thought for a long time.
“I’ll choose No. 58.”
“Then I’ll take No. 57.”
They exchanged a glance and walked into the passage.
