Chapter 242
Chapter 242
Quite a few people had already cleared 1999 by now.
It was time to release the next part of the scenario and twist the knife in the tourists some more.
While Zhang Bei was busy writing the script, Zhongwu jumped onto the desk and sprawled out in front of the computer.
Zhang Bei glanced at the open window and sighed.
“Go play with Digua!”
“Meow!”
“Are you leaving or not?”
“Meow!”
Zhang Bei looked at Zhongwu’s clean fur, then turned and fetched a damp towel.
He gave the cat two quick wipes against the grain.
Zhongwu froze in shock.
“Meow?”
Zhang Bei plopped Zhongwu onto a nearby chair.
As the cat began frantically licking his fur back into place, Zhang Bei knew the little thing wouldn’t have time to bother him for at least the next half hour.
It ended up taking longer than expected. Zhongwu was still only a kitten, after all.
He spent more than forty minutes getting every last hair back in order.
Cats are shameless little bastards by nature. (Zhu Juqing)
Despite having wasted forty minutes of his own time, Zhongwu hadn’t learned his lesson in the slightest.
He jumped onto Zhang Bei’s desk again and blocked his view.
Zhang Bei stared at him. “Are you sure you want to stay there?”
“Meow?”
A smile suddenly spread across Zhang Bei’s face.
Boss Zhang had made a career out of messing with tourists, but he had yet to target an animal.
That wouldn’t do!
And so, Zhang Bei pulled a tub of grease from the drawer.
After rubbing some onto the towel, he wiped Zhongwu’s fur against the grain once more.
When his fur was out of place, Zhongwu would naturally lick it smooth. But with the grease on it, the taste would soon become too rich for him.
Once he got over the greasy taste, he would start licking again.
After thinking it over, Zhang Bei estimated that the little thing wouldn’t have time to bother him for at least the next two hours.
When raising a cat, one had to learn to improvise!
Meanwhile, on the Island, Heizi was eagerly massaging his master’s shoulders.
“Sorry to put you to work over the next few days, Master. I’m leaving security on the Island in your hands!”
Song Xin nodded. “Understood. Brief me on the intel first.”
Heizi pulled out a thick stack of documents. “Their all-out assault begins tonight. They’ve got two fleets and over a hundred nuclear submarines.”
Song Xin looked at the documents in his hands and took a deep breath.
Then he kicked Heizi in the ass.
“That’s enough firepower to take down a small country! What the fuck am I supposed to defend against it with, my skull?”
Heizi rubbed his backside. “Don’t get worked up, Master. I wasn’t finished!”
Song Xin sat back down and flipped through the documents.
“Go on, then. What’s really going on?”
“The higher-ups will help us intercept the main force, but we’ll have to deal with any small groups that land from the submarines ourselves.”
Song Xin immediately understood what that meant.
“Got it. Leave me fifty elite soldiers and twenty units of the Electromagnetic Cannon.”
“You got it. Need anything else?”
Song Xin paused. “There’s more?”
Heizi scratched his head. “The Laboratory says they’ve completed working units of the Electromagnetic Defense Cannon and the Targeting Electromagnetic Cannon.”
“Then what are you waiting for? Give me five of each!”
“You got it!”
Heizi happily headed for the door.
He’d had no choice but to ask his master to return and take charge.
Their soldiers were all former special forces operators, so there was no need to worry about small-unit combat.
But for a large-scale battle, they needed someone with experience in that field.
Under the circumstances, his master, who had previously served as the Commanding Officer in military exercises, was the best choice.
Song Xin waved him off. “Leave this place to me. Take your men and get the hell out of here.”
“You got it!”
Heizi breathed a sigh of relief and headed outside.
“One more thing. Remember to stream the live feed to your Eldest Senior Brother.”
“Huh?”
“What do you mean, ‘huh’? Your Eldest Senior Brother has always wanted to see something like this.”
“Master, you’re playing favorites again!”
Song Xin narrowed his eyes. “What did you say?”
The threat in his voice sent a shiver through Heizi.
“I’ll go get everything ready!”
It wasn’t as if his master had only started playing favorites today. Heizi was used to it by now!
After setting up several ultra-long-range surveillance cameras, Heizi quietly withdrew from the Island with the rest of the team.
Zhang Bei spent the entire afternoon in the Monitoring Room, working on a script.
The sequel to 1999 continued in the same style as its predecessor. Zhang Bei had named it 2012.
He had already finished the general framework. All that remained was to polish a few details.
In another two or three days, it would be ready for Qingqing to experience.
He was sure the plot this time would satisfy that Little Dark Girl.
Just as he was wondering when he should launch it, his phone rang.
“Boss Zhang, did you tell Xiaoyue a story?”
Chi Fu had clearly just arrived home. Zhang Bei could even hear him changing clothes over the phone.
“Who’s Xiaoyue?”
“The kid I sent over to your place!”
Zhang Bei slapped his forehead and finally remembered.
“Oh, Xiao Cuihua. What about her?”
Chi Fu fell silent for a long moment. “Boss Zhang, if you can’t remember people’s names, stop making up random ones!”
“Get to the point!”
“Xiao Cuihua said you didn’t finish the story, and she wants to hear the rest. I wanted to ask what story you told her.”
Zhang Bei thought back carefully. Now that he considered it, he really had told her a story after dinner.
“Little Red Riding Hood?”
“All right. Got it!”
The call abruptly ended.
Zhang Bei stared at his phone in silence for a long while.
Whatever. Chi Fu would probably call back soon.
Sure enough, barely two minutes passed before Chi Fu called him again.
“What the hell did you tell her?”
“Little Red Riding Hood!”
Zhang Bei’s voice was full of innocence. The story he’d told really was called Little Red Riding Hood. It was just a slightly different version.
“Here, keep going. I’ll listen too!”
Xiao Cuihua took the phone, and her sweet, childish voice came through.
“Big Brother, where did Taro go after he left Little Red Riding Hood?”
Chi Fu’s low voice immediately followed.
“Boss Zhang, why is there a Japanese wolf in your version of Little Red Riding Hood?”
Zhang Bei coughed lightly. “Don’t get hung up on the details!”
With that, he immediately launched into his special version of Little Red Riding Hood.
“Now, after Taro learned that Little Red Riding Hood was going to visit her grandmother, he rushed ahead of her, climbed through the window, and slipped under Grandma’s covers.”
The other end of the call immediately erupted.
“Hold it right there! I’ll let this Japanese wolf business slide, but you need to explain what he’s doing under Grandma’s covers!”
Before Zhang Bei could answer, Xiao Cuihua protested.
“You need to listen to the story properly, Uncle Chi!”
“Fine, fine. Keep going!”
“To eat Little Red Riding Hood, Taro first swallowed Grandma whole. Then he lay down on the bed and disguised himself as her.”
…
The story wasn’t long. Zhang Bei finished it in just five minutes.
Holding the phone, Chi Fu fell into a deep spiral of self-doubt.
There didn’t seem to be anything wrong with the story, so why did it still feel off somehow?
Xiao Cuihua’s sweet voice came through the phone again.
“Thank you, Big Brother!”
“You’re welcome. Remember to bring your older sister to the Amusement Park sometime!”
“Okay!”
Chi Fu ended the call and let out a long sigh as he looked into Xiao Cuihua’s innocent eyes.
He could only hope the little girl would forget the story as soon as possible.
What he didn’t know was that Xiao Cuihua was very clever. She could easily retell any story she’d heard.
In fact, she had already decided to tell it to all the other children when she went to kindergarten to pick up her older sister tomorrow!
