Chapter 230
Chapter 230
Professor Li took a deep breath and gripped the file in his hand.
“We’re going to the amusement park. Find that little bastard!”
Hearing this, the assistant beside him scratched his head.
“Didn’t you say whoever went looking for that brat again was a dog?”
“Xiao Feng, the underground testing facility in the far northwest is still short-handed. Report there tomorrow.”
“Huh?”
“What do you mean, ‘huh’? Go get the car!”
“Yes, sir!”
Professor Li looked at the Laboratory’s newly hired assistant, his eyes filled with sorrow.
How had he ended up hiring someone like this?
How had anyone with emotional intelligence this low managed to survive this long?
Why hadn’t someone beaten him to death yet?
Professor Li put the file in his briefcase and pushed open the Laboratory door.
They drove straight to the amusement park and arrived before long.
The moment he saw the familiar place, Professor Li was seized by a terrible premonition.
After locking the car, the young assistant looked at Professor Li, who had stopped in his tracks, in confusion.
“What’s wrong?”
Professor Li rubbed his suddenly chilly scalp. “Let’s go.”
The old man and the young man walked into the amusement park, where delighted screams rang in their ears.
Professor Li’s gaze quickly settled on a lounge chair.
That loathsome, infuriating face came into view.
With his none-too-bright young assistant in tow, Professor Li strode over.
“Well, what brings an esteemed elder like you here?”
“Cut the crap. You’re leaving the country tomorrow?”
Zhang Bei nodded. “I’m heading to the Island to take care of something.”
“The higher-ups want to send some people to protect you. Too many people outside the country have their eyes on you.”
Zhang Bei raised an eyebrow. “No.”
Professor Li paused. “I’m serious. It’s not just that rival superpower anymore. Several other countries are watching you too.”
“Still no.”
Professor Li raked a hand through his hair. “I’m not joking with you!”
Zhang Bei looked at the irritable little old man and suddenly laughed.
“Oh, right, Old Li. Do you want a wife-bah! I mean, do you want Nuclear Fusion?”
“I don’t care whether it’s Nuclear Fusion or not. When you leave this time, you have to…”
Professor Li’s voice gradually trailed off. He stared at Zhang Bei with eyes as wide as brass bells.
“What did you just say?”
“A complete set of materials on Cold Fusion.”
At that firm answer, Professor Li’s breathing grew heavy.
“Don’t mess with me. This is no small matter!”
“I’m not joking. I really have it.”
Zhang Bei narrowed his eyes. Cold Fusion was the next technology he planned to reveal.
But if he unveiled something like that from the Island, he might as well be begging to get himself killed.
Zhang Bei needed a colossus that could stand in front of him, shoulder all the pressure, and be willing to support him.
Professor Li sent the young assistant away, then took out his phone and called his superiors.
After the call was transferred through level after level, a commanding voice came over the line.
“Go on. What’s the situation?”
The moment he heard that voice, cold sweat broke out across Professor Li’s forehead.
Anyone who had ever watched the news had heard that voice before.
As someone working within the system, Professor Li would stake the rest of his young assistant’s life on the fact that he had not misheard it.
He quickly composed himself and recounted the entire situation.
“Is that kid beside you?”
“Yes, sir!”
Professor Li glanced at Zhang Bei, who was sipping tea, then hurriedly handed him the phone.
Seeing Professor Li drenched in sweat, Zhang Bei took the phone with one hand.
“Hello?”
“Are the materials you mentioned real?”
At the sound of that voice, Zhang Bei sprayed a mouthful of hot tea straight into Professor Li’s face.
“Ahem, ahem. They’re real. The theoretical data is absolutely sound.”
The other end of the line remained silent for a long while, as if trying to process this unexpected surprise.
“Is there anything you need?”
“Not for now. We can discuss the details after I return to the country.”
“All right. Put the professor back on.”
Professor Li removed the tea leaf stuck to his face and took the phone.
“Yes, I understand. No problem!”
Even after the call ended, disbelief still filled Professor Li’s eyes.
“Wait, did you really crack Cold Fusion?”
“It’s still only theoretical. We need experiments to verify it.”
Professor Li drew a deep breath. “He said there’ll be a meeting once you get back, and you can ask for anything you need.”
Zhang Bei stretched. “Want to come take a look around the Island with me?”
Professor Li immediately hesitated.
He had no idea what the Island was like, but he had heard about all the top-of-the-line equipment Zhang Bei had bought at an exorbitant price.
“I’m allowed to go?”
“Don’t worry. Half of the Demon Court’s people are here, so safety won’t be an issue.”
Professor Li considered it for a moment, but in the end, he couldn’t suppress the urge.
“How many days?”
“About two.”
“All right!”
Professor Li hurried out of the amusement park with his dopey young assistant in tow.
Since he would be gone for two days, he had to make arrangements for the work at the Laboratory.
The Laboratory couldn’t simply grind to a halt just because he was away, could it?
The rest of the day passed uneventfully, accompanied by an endless stream of curses from the Demon Court’s members.
Before long, morning arrived.
Professor Li yawned as he looked over the neatly assembled group.
“Are these the people you poached?”
“What do you mean, ‘we poached’? That was President Qiu’s personal decision. It had nothing to do with me!”
Zhang Bei glanced at Heizi, who stood at the very front, and sold out his teammate without hesitation.
Professor Li silently turned his head away. He had spent all night reciting the Don’t Get Angry mantra. He couldn’t lose his temper now!
Li Yang swallowed as he stared at the group of burly men in black suits.
“B-Boss, are they all on our side?”
“Yes. This trip abroad is meant to introduce you to certain things.”
Li Yang nodded blankly.
After three bumpy hours, their plane finally touched down.
Zhang Bei stretched and checked the time.
“Heizi, how much longer until our plane is ready?”
“What plane?”
Zhang Bei froze. “Don’t we already have all the data for the aircraft engine?”
Heizi stiffened on the spot.
“That’s right. We already have the engine. Why didn’t I think of building a plane?”
Zhang Bei smacked his forehead at the look on Heizi’s face.
“Get moving on the aircraft development. This plane is way too slow.”
Excitement gleamed in Heizi’s eyes. “Don’t worry. Give me half a month!”
Standing nearby, Professor Li could barely conceal his envy.
Why did research and development seem so effortless for them?
Did they have so much technology that they had started forgetting what they possessed?
If you don’t want it, you can give it to me!
A ship was faintly visible in the distance across the water.
Heizi patted Zhang Bei on the shoulder. “Let’s go. Time to board!”
The ship was enormous and equipped with all kinds of advanced weaponry.
Its naval gun was essentially an Electromagnetic Cannon enlarged several times over.
The Demon Court’s members headed into the cabin with practiced ease and retrieved their weapons.
Heizi tossed Zhang Bei a man-portable Electromagnetic Cannon.
“Want to try it?”
Zhang Bei’s interest was immediately piqued.
He aimed at the water and pulled the trigger.
A towering plume of water erupted from the sea and came crashing down onto the deck.
Zhang Bei glanced at the dumbstruck Li Yang beside him, then casually tossed the Electromagnetic Cannon into his hands.
“Want to try it?”
The moment the words left his mouth, an alarm began blaring.
