Chapter 73
Chapter 73
When it comes to depression, medication is merely a supplement; the real heavy lifting relies on psychotherapy.
Old Yu was no simple character. He had spent twenty years specializing in the field of depression, dedicating his heart and soul to every patient.
Yet, as he approached retirement age, he had encountered the most difficult patient of his life.
A sixteen-year-old girl who had attempted suicide over fifty times in just three years.
She had cycled through more than thirty psychologists before finally being placed in Old Yu’s hands.
“I hope Boss Zhang can let that child have a turn tomorrow.”
Zhang Bei nodded slightly. “Alright.”
Zhang Bei couldn’t bring himself to refuse the old man. Although the amusement park didn’t allow children under eighteen to experience the rides, rules were, after all, made by people.
With the time agreed upon, Zhang Bei successfully closed the gates of the amusement park.
Time flew by, and the next day arrived.
Li Yang sat in Shen Nan’s Toy House, sipping coffee.
“So this amusement park has actually been open for thirty years?”
Shen Nan smiled and nodded. “Just about. All the locals in Dingyang City know this place. A lot of people were devastated when it closed down back then.”
Li Yang couldn’t help but click his tongue. It was hard to imagine that his workplace had existed for thirty years.
However, seeing a car pull up outside the main gate, Li Yang finished his coffee in one gulp.
“They’re here. I’m heading out to get to work!”
Shen Nan placed a doll onto a shelf and nodded. “Go on. Work hard!”
Li Yang’s presence here was entirely due to Zhang Bei’s orders. He had only one task today: to guide the sixteen-year-old girl through the Amusement Park experience.
Li Yang soon spotted Yu Yingzong and the girl.
Sixteen should have been the prime of her youth, but the girl was skin and bones, her face deathly pale. Her eyes, more than anything, were filled with an unspeakable deadness.
Zhang Bei timed his arrival and hurried over from the side.
“Let’s go. Everything is ready.”
Yu Yingzong nodded, leading the girl into the Amusement Park by the hand.
Li Yang followed beside them, his gaze occasionally drifting to the girl’s wrists. They were crisscrossed with scars of various sizes; the freshest one looked like it had happened very recently.
The girl followed them like a puppet. Li Yang carefully fastened a specialized safety rope around her waist.
“I’ll be right next to you. If you’re scared, just shout!”
Li Yang was terrified himself, but he had been at the amusement park for a long time now. He wouldn’t be so scared that he couldn’t stand up like he was in the beginning.
“Thank you.”
The girl’s voice was slightly hoarse, but Li Yang heard her clearly.
The Drop Tower soon began its operation. The thirty-meter height caused a flicker of emotion to ripple through the girl’s deathly eyes.
Sitting beside her, Li Yang couldn’t help but let a smile touch his lips.
As long as it was working, it was worth it!
Zhang Bei stood below, his eyes following the movement of the Drop Tower.
“Can you tell me about her condition?”
Yu Yingzong pondered for a moment before speaking.
“Actually, there’s nothing that can’t be said. Her father is a criminal, and she has suffered from school bullying since she was very young.”
Hearing this, Zhang Bei frowned instantly.
He had experienced school bullying himself, though he was fortunate enough to have a good brother like Heizi. The two of them had been beaten together, and they had fought back together.
It was hard to imagine what would have happened to him if Heizi hadn’t been there back then.
Bullies escalate their behavior step by step, progressing from verbal insults to physical altercations.
Zhang Bei didn’t know what the girl had gone through, but it was undoubtedly an unbearable agony.
As the two of them chatted, the Drop Tower had unknowingly ascended to ninety meters.
Feeling the chair beneath her disappear, the girl’s grip on the safety rope tightened instinctively.
The Human Yo-Yo phase of the attraction activated at that very moment.
As they moved up and down in erratic motions, Li Yang squinted his eyes to observe the girl.
Compared to ten minutes ago, there was now a slight flicker of emotion in her eyes.
Whether it was fear or excitement, any change was a good sign.
Zhang Bei had given him a heavy responsibility; he didn’t just have to ensure the girl’s safety.
He also had to observe her constantly and report these changes to Yu Yingzong to facilitate the next step of her treatment.
There weren’t many people currently at the Amusement Park who could finish every single ride without getting dizzy.
Li Yang was one of the best among them.
The Human Yo-Yo portion didn’t last long. After the safety rope’s height was adjusted, the chairs were released.
The moment they returned to the ground, Li Yang hurriedly unbuckled his safety belt.
“How do you feel?”
The girl remained silent for a moment. “I want to ride that.”
Li Yang looked in the direction she was pointing. It was the Roller Coaster, currently filled with the sounds of endless screaming.
Yu Yingzong stood to the side and smiled. “Go ahead. Let this young man accompany you again.”
Zhang Bei looked at the terrified Li Yang. “I’m leaving it to you.”
“Boss!”
“Go on. I’ll give you a bonus at the end of the month!”
Whatever Li Yang was going to say next was immediately swallowed back down.
Watching the two of them board the Roller Coaster, Zhang Bei finally spoke.
“It seems to be working.”
Yu Yingzong’s eyes crinkled into slits as he smiled. “It’s more than just working; it’s a miracle!”
There was a reason this girl was known as the most difficult patient in his twenty-year career.
From the moment he took her case, Yu Yingzong discovered that medication had a negligible effect on her.
In just one month, he had stopped three suicide attempts and five instances of self-harm.
One incident had even been life-threatening.
After long periods of psychological counseling, the girl had become so familiar with the questions doctors asked that she knew them by heart.
Sometimes, even Yu Yingzong was fooled by her.
Yu Yingzong had been treating her for nearly a year now. While the situation wasn’t exactly great, he had at least managed to get her to give up the idea of suicide.
However, as soon as her medication was stopped a while ago, she began self-harming again.
It was because of this that Yu Yingzong realized he had to use a different method to rebuild a defensive line within her heart.
From the time they formulated the plan to their arrival at the Amusement Park, this was the first time she had spoken in three whole days.
Turning his gaze to the Roller Coaster, Li Yang pulled his neck back, his body instinctively pressing tight against the seat.
The girl beside him, however, didn’t seem that afraid; her eyes were shimmering with light.
The ten-minute journey passed quickly, and in the blink of an eye, they reached the hundred-meter-high incline.
This spot was jokingly called the “Struggle Slope” by tourists.
Once you ascended this slope, every subsequent step was filled with terror; this was the last chance for one to struggle before the plunge.
It didn’t take long to climb a hundred meters, and they soon reached the peak.
The massive Roller Coaster wobbled on the tracks.
The girl, whose heart had not felt a ripple in a long time, finally experienced a sensation of tension at this moment.
She had once thought that if someone wasn’t even afraid of death, what else could they possibly fear?
But now, the Roller Coaster used facts to tell her: she had overthought it.
