“Have you seen my Sunflower?”
Lu Shenlin shook his head as well. “No. I was just about to ask whether you’d seen my Cactus.”
Just then, their roommate ran over too.
“Why is my Pea Sprout gone too?!”
The three men looked at one another. All of their plants had disappeared.
Their roommate slapped a hand to his forehead.
“We’re screwed! What are we supposed to do about our grades?”
Their task in this Instance was to cultivate plants. Only by successfully completing the research assignment could they clear it.
Now that even the plants they had raised were gone, all three of them would die here.
They conducted another carpet search of the wilderness, but once again found nothing.
Lu Shenlin tossed three study booklets onto the ground.
“These are the only clues I found on the ground. But why would study guides be here?”
Their roommate casually flipped through one. “Don’t tell me some sick monster out there makes plants do homework. That’s downright demonic!”
“Ahem…”
Su Gou, the demon in question, set the three study booklets aside and attempted to change the subject.
“This isn’t the time to worry about that. I’m going to find my Sunflower. Are you two coming?”
Lu Shenlin said, “Of course. What else would we do, stay here and wait to die?”
With their goal decided, the three of them packed a few things and set off in search of the Sunflower.
Before they left, their roommate suddenly said, “Wait. Going out like this is too dangerous. Who knows what kind of freaky stuff is in that forest? And I keep feeling like the plants around here are weird. It’s like they’re always watching me.”
Lu Shenlin dismissed the idea.
“Plants are plants. What, are they going to start talking and sprout two eyes to glare at you?”
Su Gou, who was normally calm and rational, sided with their roommate.
“I think Lin Haomiao has a point.”
Lu Shenlin’s eyes widened. “No way. Brother Su, don’t tell me you’re losing it too.”
He thought the other two were being absurd, but the majority ruled.
Then he saw what Su Gou dragged out from beneath the bed, and his jaw nearly hit the floor.
Where had all these mascot costumes come from?
“You’ve got to be kidding. Are we really wearing these things out there?”
While Lu Shenlin spoke, Lin Haomiao had already picked up a costume and started pulling it on.
Su Gou also grabbed one and began to dress.
Lu Shenlin was defeated by reality.
Even a handsome guy like Brother Su was willing to cast aside his dignity, so Lu Shenlin had no choice but to go all in too.
A short while later, all three of them had transformed.
Lu Shenlin looked down at his gaudy Christmas-tree costume, then at Su Gou’s mushroom suit and Lin Haomiao’s Cactus outfit.
“Why am I the only one dressed as a gaudy Christmas tree?”
Lin Haomiao could not even be bothered to look at him. “Because you kept being picky and refused to wear anything else. Be grateful we didn’t make you streak!”
Unable to argue, Lu Shenlin turned away with a dainty little huff.
Lin Haomiao said, “Quit moaning like that!”
Lu Shenlin: “…”
Not far away, the forest was holding a husband-selection convention.
The moment the powerful Big Tree announced that he was choosing a husband for his goddaughter, every flower and blade of grass in the area came running.
Yun Youyou had no interest in a blind date whatsoever.
Unfortunately, being unable to speak left her no way to protest, so she could only sit to the side.
Big Tree’s selection process was brutally straightforward.
If he thought a candidate was handsome, he stayed. If he was ugly, he went into Yun Youyou’s stomach.
Yun Youyou’s cheeks bulged, and her belly was perfectly round.
The entire Sunflower was visibly getting fatter by the minute.
After spending the whole morning eating spirits, Yun Youyou could not fit another thing into her stomach.
She beckoned Shamate and Red-haired Trendy Guy over, told them to cover for her, and quietly slipped away while Big Tree was not looking.
Shamate whispered a reminder. “Come back soon!”
Yun Youyou made an okay sign with a leaf.
After escaping the blind-date convention, even the air outside seemed exceptionally fresh.
Dappled shadows shifted beneath the trees, and a gentle breeze blew past. Yun Youyou took a deep breath.
“Huh? Why is there a Sunflower over here?”
Two branches suddenly reached out from behind and lifted Yun Youyou into the air.
Before she could react, she found herself dangling high above the ground.
She struggled for ages but could not break free.
As Yun Youyou thrashed, a branch plucked one of her petals.
The yellow petal drifted slowly to the ground.
“He loves me.”
Another petal was plucked.
“He loves me not.”
“He loves me.”
“He loves me not.”
…
One petal after another fell to the earth, and Yun Youyou’s heart bled with every one.
It would be a disaster if she ended up bald.
Under the threat of impending baldness, Yun Youyou seemed to break through some kind of Restriction.
“Wait!”
The moment her voice came out, Yun Youyou herself stared in shock.
She could speak!
The branches behind her spun Yun Youyou around.
The spirit looked her up and down. “You can actually talk.”
Another tree spirit?
Yun Youyou regarded the Camphor Tree Spirit in front of her with some surprise.
Her trunk might not have looked as thick as her newly adopted godfather’s, but it would still take two people to wrap their arms around it.
After marveling at Yun Youyou’s ability to speak, the tree spirit reached her wicked claws toward Yun Youyou’s petals again.
Yun Youyou hurriedly tore a handful of seeds from the face of her flower and stuffed them into the tree spirit’s hands.
“Here, have some sunflower seeds. You look like something’s bothering you. Want to talk about it?”
The tree spirit froze after accepting the seeds Yun Youyou offered.
She gave Yun Youyou a distrustful look. “You? Have you ever even dated anyone?”
Yun Youyou puffed out her chest.
“Of course. I’ve dated more men than there are trees in this forest.”
In her dreams, that was.
The tree spirit was so astonished that her branches nearly fell off.
In all her innocence, she never once considered doubting Yun Youyou. She simply believed her.
“If you’ve been in that many relationships, then you must understand love really well, right?”
Yun Youyou said, “Of course. No problem can stump this relationship expert. You came to exactly the right person.”
The tree spirit looked delighted. “Then hurry and help me figure this out.”
Yun Youyou readily agreed.
With a troubled expression, the tree spirit began describing her problem.
“My husband is incredibly handsome, but he’s also a terrible flirt. He doesn’t dare do anything openly because my brother is around, but I’ve caught him staring at other flowers and plants and secretly chatting with them.”
Yun Youyou said, “Dump him!”
The tree spirit hesitated. “But I can’t bear to. He may be irresponsible, and sometimes he yells at me and hits me, but he’s so handsome. Every time I see his face, I stop being angry.”
Yun Youyou said, “If you still won’t dump him after all that, I’m driving over here with an excavator and digging you up myself!”
The tree spirit twisted back and forth in indecision.
