Chapter 291
Chapter 291
Qin Nan wasn’t the only one who saw the words on the memorial tablet. Everyone else saw them too.
For a moment, they were all overwhelmed by mixed emotions.
Were they shocked? Not exactly. They had long since guessed that Fang Kang was dead. But were they completely unsurprised? Not quite. After all, no one had expected the first half of the event to be a wedding celebration, only for the second half to turn straight into a funeral.
This was just…
No one had anything to say.
Miss Xie carried the memorial tablet to the doorway.
Instead of stepping outside, she suddenly flung the tablet through the door.
That action seemed to serve as a signal.
The gates of the Xie Residence slammed shut. The ghosts who had been weeping so mournfully turned and closed in on Qin Nan and the others. In no time, they were completely surrounded.
“They smell so good.”
“I’m sure these people will taste delicious.”
“I can’t wait any longer.”
“…”
The ghosts slowly drew closer, talking among themselves as saliva streamed continuously from their mouths. Before long, so much had pooled on the floor that it was practically forming a small stream.
Jian Fan was the first to notice.
The saliva was about to reach their feet.
His expression changed sharply. “Get on the stools!”
Even as he spoke, Jian Fan quickly climbed onto a stool. Everyone else immediately followed suit.
A second after they got onto the stools, the saliva spread across the exact spot where they had been standing.
They had avoided touching it, but the ghosts were still closing in.
“What do we do?” Yellow Hair asked.
Jian Fan frowned.
He studied the ghosts, his mind racing.
Judging by their earlier performance, these ghosts could fly and use all manner of abilities. Yet right now, they were merely approaching at a slow pace. There had to be some rule preventing them from doing otherwise. Although he didn’t know what that rule was, its existence was good news for them.
What they needed to figure out now was how to escape their current predicament.
Ghosts…
How were they supposed to deal with ghosts?
Back in the Escape Room world, Zhao Yingguo alone had given them no end of trouble. Now they were facing an entire horde. What could they possibly do?
This was completely outside Jian Fan’s area of expertise.
“Let’s just fight them head-on,” Yang Zhen said casually as the ghosts drew closer. She snatched a plate off the table and hurled it straight at them.
Yang Zhen was an assassin, after all. She was highly skilled and had excellent aim. As the plate flew, she even used the food on it as projectiles, sending everything hurtling toward the ghosts from several different directions.
By Yang Zhen’s estimation, if the things in front of her had been human, her attack would have taken down at least a few of them. She had never fought ghosts before, so she had no idea how effective it would be against them, but surely she couldn’t fail to hit even one.
She stared intently at the plate she had thrown.
Yang Zhen wasn’t the only one watching. Everyone else was waiting to see what would happen as well.
They could only watch as the plate passed straight through the ghosts and landed far behind them.
Yang Zhen froze.
As far as the ghosts were concerned, the plate and food were completely insubstantial. No matter how skilled Yang Zhen was, she couldn’t hit them.
Wasn’t that cheating?
Meanwhile, the same thought flashed through Jian Fan’s and Qin Weiyi’s minds.
“The whip!” they shouted in unison.
Lu Jing might have been slow on the uptake in other matters, but when it came to fighting and weapons, his mind worked fast. The instant Jian Fan and Qin Weiyi spoke, he understood what they meant and immediately unwrapped the whip coiled around his waist.
Lu Jing snapped his whip straight ahead.
The seemingly ordinary whip burst into flame the instant it touched the ghosts. Before long, the entire weapon had become a flaming whip.
The ghosts had been staring greedily and drooling, but their expressions changed drastically when they saw the whip. They stopped advancing. Some of the ghosts at the front were struck by the whip and let out shrieks of pain. The flames on the whip spread directly to their bodies. Although the flames quickly died out, visible wounds had appeared on them.
The ghosts were afraid of the whip.
It could hurt them. Instead of advancing, they took several steps back and kept enough distance to ensure that Lu Jing couldn’t hit them with a swing of his whip.
However, they only retreated a short distance and showed no intention of leaving.
They continued eyeing the group standing on the stool like prey.
“This whip is that effective?” Yellow Hair exclaimed in delight.
Afraid that the ghosts would approach, Lu Jing kept swinging the whip, sending it slicing through the air with formidable momentum.
“We just need to hold out until dawn,” Shi Chen said, also breathing a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, they were with Lu Jing. His combat ability was no joke.
However, Lu Jing’s expression didn’t ease as he studied the whip. “The whip is wearing out.”
“Huh?” Yellow Hair looked confused, but he quickly realized what Lu Jing meant.
The whip would deteriorate with use. Once it broke, they wouldn’t be able to use it anymore.
That raised the question: how long could a single whip last before it broke completely?
A rope cost 300 Points. That was hardly cheap.
“If we have to, we’ll exchange for another one,” Qin Nan said casually.
They had to use their Points for something, didn’t they? As long as they survived this, they probably wouldn’t run into this many ghosts again.
At least, that was what Qin Nan thought.
They should still have enough Points.
Qin Weiyi agreed with Qin Nan. “Tell me when it’s about to break. I’ll exchange for the next one.”
“Let me do it,” Mu Xin offered.
Although she had already spent 800 Points, she still had plenty left.
Qin Weiyi glanced at Mu Xin and didn’t refuse.
Now that they were prepared to spend Points on replacements, there shouldn’t be any major problems. They could only hope that each whip would last as long as possible.
Qin Weiyi thought one step further.
He looked at Yang Zhen and asked, “Do you know how to use one?”
“I’ve never tried, but I can give it a shot,” Yang Zhen replied.
Qin Weiyi nodded. “Let Lu Jing rest later. You can take over for a while.”
“All right,” Yang Zhen agreed readily.
However, they had underestimated the situation.
The whip had indeed held off most of the ghosts, but–
The crowd of ghosts suddenly parted, and Miss Xie slowly emerged from their midst.
She wasn’t afraid of the whip.
When Lu Jing swung it at her, she suddenly reached out and seized the other end.
Lu Jing never imagined she would catch his whip so easily. Worse, when he pulled with all his strength to wrench it back, he discovered that he couldn’t make Miss Xie budge an inch.
What now?
Lu Jing began to worry.
