Chapter 140
Chapter 140
That horrifying face was pressed tight against the glass door, its mouth stretched wide open at them.
Blood kept pouring out of its mouth.
Mu Xin’s legs went weak with fright, and she collapsed to the floor. She hurriedly clamped a hand over her mouth.
Qin Weiyi wasn’t much better.
They might both be Old Player veterans of the Realm of Death, but something appearing this suddenly was still enough to scare the life out of anyone. His face was deathly pale, only marginally better than Mu Xin’s.
Qin Nan opened his mouth. The first half of a curse had already reached his lips, but he forced it back down.
This was the most terrifying thing he had encountered since entering the Realm of Death.
And it wasn’t just terrifying. It was dangerous.
The thing-whatever it was, human or not-was pressed right up against the glass door. There was only a single door between them. Qin Nan began to wonder whether this glass door could actually stop it.
He got his answer soon enough.
After snarling at the glass door a few times, it suddenly whipped its head around and looked at the others inside the room.
Lu Jing had reacted quickly, allowing him and Qin Weiyi to avoid disaster. But the other people in the room were nowhere near as fast as Lu Jing.
They had only heard Lu Jing shout. Before they could even figure out what had happened, they saw Lu Jing and Qin Weiyi rush onto the balcony. Then something-no one knew what-threw itself against the glass door.
Xia Zeqin was the first to react.
He had barely made a move all this time, but the instant that thing hit the glass door, he turned and ran out. The others had not even noticed him move.
And now, they saw the thing suddenly turn its head, revealing its true face to them.
“Holy shit.” Yellow Hair jolted so hard he nearly jumped. Among the people left, he was the first to react.
He spun around and bolted for the door. As he turned, he seemed to remember something and grabbed Lin Junruo beside him.
Lin Junruo was no better off than Mu Xin.
Her feet felt as if they weighed a thousand pounds, and she couldn’t move at all. Fortunately, Yellow Hair yanked her. Though she stumbled from the pull, it snapped her back to her senses.
She followed Yellow Hair and rushed out of the dorm room.
Shi Chen reacted quickly too.
He also pulled Wen Xi along.
The two of them were almost right behind Yellow Hair as they left the dorm.
Next came Liu Ji.
Xu Yijie was the last.
As he ran for the door and went out, he also shut the dorm room door behind him.
The thing pressed against the glass door stared in the direction Yellow Hair and the others had fled, then suddenly lunged forward. Qin Nan and the others on the balcony saw everything clearly.
It had pounced straight over. It was unbelievably fast, leaving only a red afterimage hanging in the air.
However, because it had lingered against the glass door for a moment, it had wasted a little time. Or rather, it wasn’t in any hurry at all. Only after it “saw” Yellow Hair and the others running outside did it start darting toward the door.
So-
When it reached the doorway, that was exactly when Xu Yijie shut the dorm room door.
Behind the glass door, it pressed itself against the door once more.
“Fuck!” Qin Nan couldn’t hold back and cursed out loud.
In his head, he cursed Xu Yijie up one side and down the other.
Everyone else had only been thinking about running out. He was the only one who thought to close the door. What was the point of closing it? To block that unknown thing?
Qin Nan wasn’t that naive.
Xu Yijie clearly wanted to leave the five of them on the balcony behind.
Sacrifice the five of them in exchange for his own life.
They had run out, and the dorm room door had been shut. So who would this thing turn its attention to now? It wasn’t exactly a difficult question to answer.
Jian Fan suddenly raised a hand and made a shushing gesture at Qin Nan.
Qin Nan looked at him.
Jian Fan pointed at his own eyes.
Qin Nan understood almost immediately.
That thing had no eyes!
In other words, there was a good chance it couldn’t see. So even though the glass door let them see everything outside, that thing might not be able to see them.
If that was the case, then they still had a chance to keep hiding.
Qin Nan immediately clamped his mouth shut, sealing it tight without letting out the slightest sound. His eyes, meanwhile, stayed fixed on the thing currently sprawled against the door.
It was terrifying, but staying alive mattered more.
Qin Nan watched it turn its head.
Its head rotated a full 360 degrees, practically “looking” all the way around, but it didn’t linger in their direction at all. In other words, Jian Fan’s guess was right.
It couldn’t see.
That bit of good news helped Qin Nan suppress the fear brought on by the sight of its head spinning in a complete circle.
Its head soon turned back to its original position. Then, slowly, it slid down from the door.
It slid all the way to the floor, turning into a puddle of blood. After that-
Qin Nan’s eyes went wide, and he quickly slapped a hand over his mouth to stop himself from making a sound.
The puddle of blood slowly began to solidify upward again, until it formed the shape of a person. Then the blood receded, revealing the figure inside.
It was a girl in a red dress, with waist-length black hair styled half-up and half-down. A red bow sat in her hair, and she had slightly cute, wispy bangs.
Once the girl had fully taken shape, the blood around her vanished without a trace.
She tilted her head slightly, as if listening for something.
Qin Nan had no idea what she heard, but he saw her smile.
He even saw dimples at the corners of her mouth.
She was the kind of girl whose smile looked sweet and pretty.
Once it shed that horrifying face, what stood before them now was simply a cute, sweet-looking young girl. The only flaw was that there was no light in her eyes.
She still couldn’t see.
If they hadn’t witnessed it with their own eyes, who could have imagined that this little girl was actually such a terrifying thing?
The girl reached out a hand. Around her wrist was a red woven cord, with a string of bells braided into it. She gave her hand the slightest shake, and the bells immediately let out a crisp, tinkling chime.
To Qin Nan’s ears, that sound was no different from a death knell.
“You’re not cute at all. Why couldn’t you just stay where you were? I hate hide-and-seek the most.” The girl was still smiling, as if the hide-and-seek she spoke of was nothing more than a little game.
“Fine, then. I’ll play with you for a while,” the girl said.
Then she walked toward the bathroom. As she walked, she murmured, “Are you hidden? I’m coming to find you now. Knock, knock, knock. Let me see if anyone’s here. Ah, I hear something. Here I come.”
Qin Nan watched as she talked to herself and entered the bathroom. After that, her voice gradually grew distant and faded away.
They were on the balcony, so they couldn’t see what was happening inside the bathroom.
Qin Nan turned to look at Jian Fan.
Was she still in the bathroom? Or was there some other passage inside that she could use?
Qin Nan soon had his answer.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Footsteps sounded from the doorway.
They were clearly coming from outside the dorm room, not from the bathroom.
And before long, those footsteps moved farther and farther away from them.
That girl had left the bedroom through the bathroom.
