Chapter 40
Chapter 40
In the end, Xiaoshuai and Jack survived after all.
The two of them left behind every Fiendish Item they had, along with all their tools for controlling Fiends. Then they knelt on the ground, kowtowed a few times, and ran off without looking back.
Liu Ye thought to himself, How polite. They must have listened to me and gone to see a Chinese medicine doctor. Hope it works out for them.
As for the things on the ground, he had no interest in taking them. They weren’t worth much anyway, so he gave them all to John.
John had basically hit the jackpot, but he didn’t get to be happy for long before a call came in.
“Brother Zhao, something’s happened.”
…
A little earlier, inside an apartment in a certain residential complex, a burly man was at home eating peanuts and drinking beer.
He was Zhao Na’s protector. Back when he first saw the mission, he had wanted to refuse it for the same reason as Wang Zixuan: he didn’t want his identity exposed.
Of course, more than that, he simply didn’t want to go to all that trouble protecting someone unrelated to him.
There were other people on this mission anyway. Whether he was there or not made no difference.
With that thought in mind, he had stayed comfortably at home.
Bzzzt!
He was enjoying his food when the lightbulb suddenly flickered.
The man instantly felt a chill run down his spine and pulled out a small knife.
Blood immediately seeped from the blade, and the lights in the apartment returned to normal.
The man sucked in a cold breath. As a player, he knew very well that he had been targeted.
How the hell was he this unlucky? He didn’t even have time to put on his shoes before he rushed straight out the door.
He decided to head for a player club in Huicheng. There were plenty of players there, and even if it was a Fiend, they would be able to deal with it.
His plan was sound enough. But the moment he stepped outside, he saw a huge blade chopping straight down at him.
“Aaah!”
The man screamed and once again thrust the small knife forward.
The Fiend before him vanished again. He hurriedly ran downstairs.
But as he ran, he realized he was still on his own floor.
He knew he had run into a Ghost Wall. Just as he was about to take out the small knife again, a blade stabbed clean through him.
Shhk!
The blade was pulled out, and then the Fiend vanished without a trace.
Back in the present, John and Wang Zixuan arrived at the scene together. They had run into each other on the way.
After hearing John’s idea, Wang Zixuan had decisively knocked Zhao Ze unconscious. Sure enough, after that, she had not encountered any further danger.
Later, on her way to the hospital, she ran into John coming out from inside, so the two of them came to the man’s home together.
“A friend called and said the man was killed by someone missing half his head,” John said.
“Missing half his head? Xie Baoguo?”
Wang Zixuan spoke in surprise.
“It should be him,” John said.
“He turned into a Chang Ghost?”
A so-called Chang Ghost was a low-level Fiend created from someone killed by a Fiend. It had no potential of its own and could only be driven by a Fiend. It was an extremely effective method for Fiends to use against humans.
“No.”
John pulled the small knife out of the man’s clothes.
The knife was clearly a Fierce Ghost-level Fiendish Item, and it was already on the verge of revival.
“My friend said the man used this knife several times. It’s Fierce Ghost-level, and when used to ward off Fiends, even at the very last moment, it should buy at least half an hour of safety. But after he used it several times in a row, each time it only held for a few seconds.”
John looked again at the strange footprints on the ground and immediately fell into thought.
Wang Zixuan’s expression turned even uglier. After all, she didn’t even have a Fierce Ghost-level Fiendish Item. If a Fiend like this had set its sights on her, her chances would be grim.
“But wasn’t this mission aimed at Zhao Ze and the others? Why would it suddenly kill him?” Wang Zixuan couldn’t understand it.
“If that was really all there was to it, wouldn’t this mission be far too easy?” John looked at her.
“No mission issued by the Fiendish World is easy. I only realized it after Brother Liu reminded me. The optimal solution for this mission is to turn those six people into vegetables at the first possible moment. As long as they don’t recall those forgotten memories, they won’t violate the Fiend’s Taboo. Naturally, they won’t be attacked.”
Wang Zixuan understood at once. That was indeed the case. If they turned those six people into vegetables, they would no longer be in danger, and their Protection mission would be complete.
“But to realize that, you have to go through some danger first. If there was even one mistake along the way, we’d be the unlucky ones instead.”
“What do you mean?”
“It’s simple. The mission called Oblivion is a Novice Mission targeting those people, but it’s linked to the Protection mission. As soon as any of them dies, they’ll turn into Fiends and come after us.”
John had inferred this from the Fiend’s appearance as described by his friend.
Still, he felt this was the only way it made sense. Otherwise, their Fixed Mission would truly be too easy-they could simply sit back and watch those people die.
Now that he had discovered the people they were supposed to protect would become Fiends hunting them down after death, it all made sense.
At this rate, if they mishandled things even slightly, they would end up being chased by six Terror Fiends.
“Looks like we still have to make a trip to Chongmen Island.”
John said this silently to himself.
If possible, he really didn’t want to go to that place. But there was no helping it. Since one person was already dead, the optimal solution was gone. All they could do now was take the risk.
Early the next morning, John contacted a boat and headed to Chongmen Island together with Liu Ye and the others.
Chongmen Island was a small island that had only recently been developed. It wasn’t large, and its main selling point was private tourism where no one would disturb you.
The scenery there was beautiful, and the facilities were complete. Visitors could enjoy rare private time there with their friends.
That was why Fu Yang and the others had gone to the island in the first place.
“Brother Zhao, you’re amazing. That island has been incredibly popular lately. The waiting list is booked out three years in advance, but you actually managed to reserve it.”
Wang Zixuan said.
She had wanted to travel there before as well, but she couldn’t even get on the list. Besides, the price was far too high.
“It’s nothing. I bought the island,” John said.
Wang Zixuan: “…”
The way she looked at John instantly changed.
The man before her was young, rich, handsome, powerful, and smart. He was practically the perfect marriage candidate.
At that thought, she quietly tugged at her camisole strap, making her curves look even more impressive.
“You cheap slut!!!” Miss Zhang, who was attached to John, roared.
“Yuelang, you mustn’t be seduced…”
Miss Zhang had only just finished speaking when she saw John gazing at Liu Ye with an expression of deep admiration.
Miss Zhang: “…”
All of a sudden, she felt that having some woman try to seduce him might not be the worst thing. If Yuelang was stolen away by a woman, there might still be a chance to win him back. But if his sexual orientation changed, that would truly be despair.
