Chapter 67

“Mm… Use relaxed, casual words to close the distance between you and your students.” Liu Ye struggled through the sentence, reading it word by word.

The gathered Fiend: “…”

Liu Ye lifted his head, and everyone immediately shrank into the corner.

Liu Ye sighed in admiration. As expected of the handbook. It was absolutely right. This distance really was way too far.

“Well, don’t be scared. Your teacher is a very easygoing person. Once we’ve spent more time together, you’ll know what kind of person I am. Hey, why are you all backing up? It’s not like I’m going to beat you to death.”

The gathered Fiend: “…”

He was threatening them, wasn’t he?

“Boo!”

Liu Ye suddenly roared, scaring the gathered Fiend so badly they cried out for their mothers and collapsed onto the floor.

“Hahaha, don’t get worked up. Teacher was just making a little joke. Pretty funny, right?”

The gathered Fiend: “…”

There was definitely something seriously wrong with this guy’s head.

“Hm? The distance is still a little far.” Seeing that the students still hadn’t gotten any closer to him, Liu Ye couldn’t help wondering if there was something he hadn’t done properly.

He had just reached for the book when he heard a whoosh. When he looked up again, everyone was back in their seats, smiling at him one by one, their backs ramrod straight.

A smile appeared on Liu Ye’s face. Sure enough, the handbook would never lie to him!

“Good. Since today is our first class, we’ll talk about the classroom rules!”

“First, your appearance and grooming. You’re all students, so you need to pay attention to your image. At school, you should wear uniforms. Look at what you’re wearing now. What do you even look like?”

“Teacher, this is the only outfit we have,” all the Fiends said helplessly.

“Is that so…” Liu Ye sighed again. This school was way too stingy. Such a big school, and they couldn’t even prepare a few extra sets of clothes for the students.

“Listen up. I don’t care what things were like before, but now that I’m here, everyone has to wear a uniform. It just so happens I have some with me. Take these and change first.”

When the Fiends heard that, they were actually quite happy. They hadn’t expected that after being dead for so many years, they would still get new clothes to wear.

A moment later, they sat in their seats with blank, lifeless eyes, wearing… mourning clothes…

Not only that, the two tall ones in the back were each holding a soul-summoning banner, while the two Fiends near the podium in front were each holding a funeral horn.

Liu Ye thought it was a good thing he’d come prepared, though he was also extremely puzzled. Why did students have to wear mourning clothes to school? Was there some deeper meaning behind it?

Meanwhile, in Black Cow Village, a group of Funeral Band Fiend stood gathered at the village chief’s front door, completely bare from head to toe. Covering their three vital points with both hands, they stared expressionlessly at the village chief.

“Ah…”

The village chief wanted to say something, but found that he couldn’t get a single word out. The scene before him was truly too horrible to look at.

Just then, the lead Funeral Band Fiend felt someone pat his calf. He looked down and saw Guiwa coming over with a pile of leaves, which he handed to him.

“Just make do and cover yourselves with these for now,” Guiwa said with a sigh.

The leader silently picked up the leaves, nodded at Guiwa, then distributed them to the other Funeral Band Fiend. After that, they neatly used the leaves to cover their faces.

Guiwa: “…”

“No, what I meant was for you to cover… Forget it. I guess the effect is about the same.”

Before long, a neat chorus of sighs echoed through the village.

…

Back in the classroom, Liu Ye looked at the students below. Never mind what they were wearing. At least they looked pretty uniform, didn’t they?

“All right, isn’t this much better… Ahem. Anyway, let’s start class now!”

Liu Ye opened the textbook, but the moment he saw the beginning, he was stunned.

What was this? Why was it full of pinyin? And all the pinyin was wrong!

“What’s going on with this book? Is this some pirated copy?”

The Fiends were even more confused. This had been the same book for decades.

“Where are your books?”

Where were they supposed to get books? After so many years, they had all disappeared long ago.

Liu Ye was furious. Back then, he simply hadn’t had the chance, but these children had such a good opportunity to study, so why didn’t they know how to cherish it?

“You really are too much. If this keeps up, how are you supposed to get into college? And there are… there are who knows how many days left until the college entrance exam! How can you go on like this?”
Liu Ye said furiously, “This afternoon, every last one of you is bringing your guardians here! I’m holding a parent-teacher meeting!”

With that, he grabbed his book and left. He had to hurry and get Director Zhen to swap it for a new one. Seriously, a school this big was still using pirated textbooks? How embarrassing was that?

After he left, all the Fiends huddled together.

“What are we supposed to do? He wants a parent-teacher meeting. Where am I supposed to find parents for him? Mine have been dead for over thirty years,” one Fiend said miserably.

“Besides, we can’t even leave this place.”

“Screw it. Worst comes to worst, we fight him!” one hot-tempered Fiend snapped.

The moment he said that, every Fiend turned to stare at him.

“No, seriously. If we could beat him, would we have had to put up with this until now?” Yellow Hair, the one Liu Ye had beaten up first, said speechlessly.

“Why don’t we report him to the education bureau?” another Fiend suggested.

“…Do you really think the education bureau would take a case like ours? Are you brainless… Oh. You really don’t have a brain.” Yellow Hair was at a loss for words.

“Heh heh!” The Fiend scratched his own neck and gave two simple-minded chuckles.

After the Fiends argued heatedly for more than twenty minutes, the bell rang again. The instant a man walked in, he was so frightened that he threw his book away.

What was going on?

Why were they all dressed in mourning clothes? It was only the first day. Had things already reached Terror level?

When the Fiends saw the man, their eyes lit up at once.

Right. How could they have forgotten about these people?

Terror spread across the man’s face. This was the first time so many Fiends had stared at him all at once.

“We’d like to discuss something with you…”

…

Meanwhile, Liu Ye had been wandering aimlessly around the campus for ages because he couldn’t find Director Zhen.

When he reached a small river, he spotted a girl standing by the water, tears streaming from her eyes.

Liu Ye took one look and thought, She’s going to jump. This won’t do. This is serious.

“Student!”

He let out an angry roar.

With a splash, the student jumped in.

Liu Ye quickly grabbed a pole to save her.

After going through tremendous effort to haul her back up, he saw her looking left and right like a lion with its fur standing on end.

“Which bastard was jabbing a pole into the water just now?!”

As soon as she finished speaking, she saw Liu Ye holding the pole. Liu Ye immediately tossed the wooden pole aside.

“Uh, student, I was trying to save you.”

“Who the hell asked you to save me? The water didn’t even reach the top of my thighs!” the girl roared.

“Oh, then I misunderstood. But why were you trying to kill yourself? How could you face your parents if you did something like that?”

Liu Ye spoke with heartfelt distress.

“You don’t know anything about me. I… Wait. Who said I was trying to kill myself?”

“If you weren’t, why did you jump into the river?”

“Because you scared me into falling in!” the girl shouted.

Liu Ye realized he had misunderstood.

“Ah, sorry about that. I misunderstood. But I saw you crying. Is something weighing on your mind? You can talk to your teacher about it.”

The girl wiped her face and glanced at Liu Ye. Then she sat down on the ground and said quietly, “I miss my sister.”

“Your sister? What happened to her?”

“She disappeared…”

The girl spoke slowly.

Her sister was three years older than her, so three years ago, her family had sent her here.

Huicheng High School was a boarding school. Once students entered, they couldn’t leave, and they couldn’t even go home during holidays. Fortunately, they were still allowed to use phones. The two sisters were very close and basically called each other every two or three days.

But one year ago, her sister suddenly sent her a message.

“Whatever you do, don’t come to Huicheng High School!”
