Chapter 142
Chapter 142
The Driver rubbed his chin. Huicheng Hospital seemed to be the territory of a Fiend that had emerged within the last two years. Its memories were still hazy, so he did not know it well.
That hardly mattered. If they were not friends now, they could become friends after spending some time together.
“Take Liu Ye to register. Leave everything else to me.”
The short man nodded repeatedly. Then he realized the voice beside him had disappeared.
He hurriedly pulled up his trousers and looked around. Darkness surrounded him, with no one in sight. Tears streaming down his face, he scrambled back to the barbecue restaurant.
Everyone else had already left.
Cursing them, he considered hailing a taxi. But the night outside was pitch-black. Who knew whether another Fiend might appear? After hesitating, he took out his phone.
“Hello, police? I paid a young lady to discuss life with me yesterday, and now my conscience demands that I report this injustice. Yes, I’m at Sixth Brother Barbecue. Please hurry and arrest me.”
Early the next morning, Liu Ye stepped outside and found one of yesterday’s workers waiting for him. The man greeted him with a fawning smile.
“Little Brother Liu Ye!”
“Brother Sun, what brings you here?”
Something was wrong. Yesterday, Brother Sun had regarded Liu Ye with contempt. Why was he so friendly today?
“Well, Brother Liu Ye, I offended you slightly yesterday. I came specifically to apologize.”
Since the man was so polite, Liu Ye let the matter go. He was magnanimous, after all.
“It’s fine. Everyone experiences a few disagreements away from home. What did you need?”
“Since the construction site shut down, I found a new job. I wondered if you might be interested.”
Liu Ye’s eyes lit up. “Absolutely! What kind of work?”
“Caregiving at a hospital. You look after patients who have difficulty moving. Three thousand a month, with food and lodging included.”
This was perfect. Liu Ye excelled at caring for others. Back in his village, he had personally looked after countless elderly people until they passed away.
“When can I start?”
“Today.”
The two set off immediately.
Liu Ye gazed nostalgically at Huicheng Hospital. This was where he had once cared for Fu Yang. Returning brought back fond memories.
The damaged building had not yet been repaired, so he could not visit it. They went instead to the new inpatient building, which contained a small training center.
The room was already full when they arrived.
“Big Brother Liu Ye?” a young woman called excitedly from the front.
Liu Ye turned toward a vaguely familiar face. He sniffed the air, then recognized her.
“You’re Wang Weiwei!”
She nodded vigorously. She had never expected to encounter this great expert. Her chances of survival suddenly seemed secure.
Wang Weiwei had come to complete a mission.
[Mission: Huicheng Hospital]
[Objective: Work as a caregiver at Huicheng Hospital for seven days.]
[Reward One: 300 points.]
[Reward Two: 260 experience points.]
[Reward Three: One Malignant Ghost-grade Fiendish Item of your choice.]
[Participants: Wang Weiwei, Li Wei, Wang Fugui, Tong Qian, Guo Xiaojun, Zhang Yanyan, Sun Miao.]
The System had recently begun listing participants for one reason: to tell players that unrelated individuals were not participants. They should not approach those people, involve them, or allow random passersby to interfere with the mission.
At the same time, the System indirectly passed the participants’ information to the Fiends. It wanted them to understand exactly how many newcomers had entered and to stop adding extra people.
It never anticipated that one shameless Fiend would exploit a connection and force a certain someone into the mission anyway.
Wang Weiwei had completed three missions since her previous encounter with Liu Ye, surviving each through sheer luck. The difficulty of this assignment had initially left her in despair. Meeting Liu Ye changed everything.
“You know this young lady? Perfect. You two can talk. I’ll leave now,” Brother Sun said.
“Aren’t you working with us?” Liu Ye asked.
“No. I need to have my prostate examined first.”
Clutching his medical card, Brother Sun hurried away.
Liu Ye sat beside Wang Weiwei. Apart from her, three men and three women were participating in the mission.
Unlike Wang Weiwei, all six used items from the System shop to conceal their faces. The disguises were completely useless before Liu Ye.
He was nervous for a different reason. Even a caregiver position had this many applicants. Employment outside the village truly was competitive. To stand out, he would have to show the interviewer something distinctive.
Liu Ye silently encouraged himself.
A man in a white coat entered. His badge identified him as the director of the inpatient department.
“Welcome to Huicheng Hospital. I am the director of this department. You may call me Director Jia.”
“Good morning, Director Jia!” Liu Ye jumped to his feet and shouted.
The sudden roar nearly knocked Director Jia over.
Excellent. The director had definitely noticed him.
Liu Ye congratulated himself. Brother Guiwa always said that when working outside the village, he had to leave a strong impression on his superiors.
Director Jia’s mouth twitched as he checked the onboarding form. Liu Ye had been added at the last moment by someone higher up.
The young man certainly had enthusiasm. He also appeared rather simpleminded.
“Let me make something clear. Huicheng Hospital is a key municipal hospital, so our rules are especially strict. I hope none of you violate them. After all, they concern your… future.”
A strange smile spread across Director Jia’s face.
“Yes, sir!” Liu Ye shouted.
Director Jia flinched again. He considered saying something, then remembered who had arranged Liu Ye’s admission. Lips pursed, he edged several steps farther away.
“These are your employee handbooks. You must follow every rule exactly.”
The players opened them immediately. The handbook could mean the difference between life and death.
