Chapter 102
Chapter 102
Liu Ye came ashore with his fish just in time to witness the aftermath.
“Holy crap!”
He hurried over and found No. 63’s mangled corpse.
“Wait a minute. Why does the way he died look so familiar?”
Liu Ye thought for a moment, then remembered.
“That’s it! This is exactly how those people at the hospital died! Damn, did this bunch come all the way out here to kill themselves again? This isn’t about those three balls too, is it?”
This would not do. This was a perfectly respectable tourist attraction. If people kept pulling stunts like this, how was the place supposed to stay open?
He needed to sit them down and have a proper talk. Liu Ye had some confidence in his powers of persuasion; hadn’t he talked two people out of it last time?
And if he remembered correctly, these people belonged to some sort of organization.
He suddenly felt like the hero of a movie, ready to fight an evil organization to the bitter end!
The wealthy spectators watching the screen were merely surprised. They had not expected the kid to be so lucky. That defective specimen had died in an utterly pathetic fashion.
“Goddammit! That piece of trash cost me money! Send more Numbered Ones over there and kill the brat!” one furious man shouted.
Beside him, a wealthy woman threw her head back and laughed in delight.
The sight chilled John to the bone.
Their masks did nothing to hide their identities from him. Both ranked among the wealthiest people in the country; he could even consider them his elders.
In the past, they had carried themselves with remarkable refinement. They might not have been paragons of virtue, but they had at least been composed and dignified. Now look at them.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” the host announced, “our Numbered Ones have captured the first group of losers. Six in total!”
Photographs of six people instantly appeared on the screen, with a list of traits beneath each face.
These were only the ones who had been captured, of course. Anyone who died outright did not count.
“Now, interested ladies and gentlemen, please place your bids!”
The spectators began writing at once.
Within moments, prices appeared beneath the photographs. Every bid started at no less than a million yuan, while one young woman had already climbed into the tens of millions.
“Excellent. Now, let us welcome our losers to the floor!”
The six captives were wheeled in inside cages. They stared in terror at the people below.
“Would our winning bidders prefer to enjoy their purchases here,” the host asked, “or shall we deliver them to your rooms?”
“Send mine back with me. I’m in a hurry,” an aged voice replied.
He was the man who had spent tens of millions on the young woman. An IV was attached to his hand, but the liquid dripping into his veins was no ordinary medicine. It was a Desire Potion.
The old man was already ninety-eight, his body on the verge of complete collapse. Only the Desire Potion was keeping him barely alive.
He had paid such an extravagant sum for the young woman because he needed replacement parts for his own body.
“No need for any special arrangements on my account. Bring me a handful of bamboo skewers!” another wealthy man said excitedly.
He strode toward the captive he had won. Agonized screams soon rang from inside the cage.
Some spectators took their cages away. Others chose to murder their captives on the spot through all manner of brutal methods. Still others had different uses in mind.
Only one man did something unexpected.
“Host, I would like to present my purchase to our new guest,” Fox Mask said with a smile.
The guest he indicated was John.
“Might we have the pleasure of admiring this gentleman’s methods?”
The instant Fox Mask finished speaking, a dinner knife flashed past his cheek and buried itself in the captive’s skull.
“I have no interest in prey that isn’t mine,” John said calmly.
Rather than taking offense, Fox Mask smiled.
“Oh, my apologies. I shouldn’t have intruded upon your pleasure.”
Once all the captives had been dealt with, attendants immediately came forward to clean the floor. Then the audience returned to the show.
“Was that really all right?” Xiaoshuai asked beside him with a beaming smile.
“My mission is to dismantle this place and eliminate the Numbered Ones. I have no obligation to save those people,” John replied.
He had never considered himself a good man. On his very first mission, he had been perfectly willing to sacrifice Wang Weiwei without the slightest burden on his conscience. Besides, these people had come here of their own free will. They had chosen this path, so they would have to walk it to the end.
“How cold-blooded.” Xiaoshuai lounged back in his chair, amusement playing across his face.
But it was precisely because he knew John’s character that he had dared bring him here.
He turned his attention back to the feed and spotted Liu Ye again.
Two Numbered Ones now stood before him. One bore the number 49, the other 52.
As far as Xiaoshuai knew, the lower a Numbered One’s number, the stronger they were-and the more rational.
He wondered how Liu Ye would deal with them.
“Gentlemen, put down your weapons and hear me out. The world isn’t as awful as you think! Whatever trouble you’re in, just tell me. I can help you sort it out! This is all because of three testicles, right? Just have them removed and be done with it. I know a celebrity named Xu Fei who used to be just like you. Look at him now-he had the surgery, and he’s doing great!”
Xiaoshuai fell silent.
So did the two Numbered Ones.
They had reached a conclusion: this man was a lunatic spouting gibberish.
They immediately contacted their superiors to ask whether anyone wanted to bid on him. If there was interest, they would avoid killing him and try to keep his body intact.
“Excellent. Would anyone care to purchase this contestant-”
Click!
John instantly pressed his bidding button. He trusted Liu Ye’s strength and knew the Numbered Ones would never capture him. Placing a bid would also help dispel any remaining suspicion toward John.
The host saw his bid and immediately sent new orders to the two Numbered Ones.
Upon receiving them, the pair lowered their weapons.
Liu Ye brightened. It looked like they had listened after all.
“Perfect timing! I’ve made fish soup. Come over and have some!”
The moment Liu Ye turned around, the two Numbered Ones lunged.
But then a light breeze swept past, and the Notebook lying on the riverbank stirred once more.
Just as the two Numbered Ones closed in on Liu Ye, several birds swooped down and flapped into their faces. They instinctively stumbled backward and, by the most extraordinary coincidence, stepped on the ends of their own weapon handles.
Both weapons sprang into the air at bizarre angles and stabbed their owners through the neck.
“The fish soup’s fresh…”
Liu Ye turned back just in time to see the two men impale themselves.
He fell silent.
So did the wealthy spectators.
“Ah, I let my guard down!”
Liu Ye regretted it so much he began slapping himself. He had assumed putting down their weapons meant they had listened. Who knew they would pull one of those… what was it called? A sneak… a steak attack!
