Chapter 47
Chapter 47
“Crack!”
John sank wearily into a chair. The film was over, but every part of him ached with unbearable pain. Everything that had happened to Liu Sibo felt as if it had happened to him instead.
Just then, the movie screen came down. John immediately looked over and saw a corpse lying there with half its head missing.
The body had already begun to rot, but John recognized it at a glance.
It was Xie Baoguo!
He hurried over and examined the corpse. Judging by its condition, the time of death had been around five days ago.
That was exactly when Xie Baoguo and the others had arrived on Chongmen Island.
And in that moment, John realized his earlier guess had been wrong.
He had originally thought that Xie Baoguo and the others had recovered their memories, then been killed by the Fiend.
But in truth, the cause and effect were reversed. They had already died. The accidents caused by the Fiend were measures designed to make them remember that they were dead. Once they remembered that fact, they would truly die!
No wonder this mission was called Oblivion. What they had to forget was the truth that they were already dead. Only then could they continue living as human beings!
John continued examining the corpse. When he lifted the corpse’s hand, he saw the character “Lyu” written beneath it.
A guess flashed through John’s mind. He was about to head to the place where Lyu Jicheng had died to verify it, but just as he stood up, a crisp crunch suddenly sounded beside his ear.
In an instant, his entire body went taut. Before coming in, he had deliberately scattered popcorn along the aisle.
Back at the home of the dead protector, he had seen some black footprints. Those footprints seemed to belong to Xie Baoguo, so he had guessed that these Fiends must have physical bodies.
He turned around and saw several severed limbs coming in from outside. Based on the clothes on them, John recognized them as belonging to Lyu Jicheng.
With a curl of his finger, the Oil Lamp appeared in his hand. Miss Zhang instantly slipped into his jade pendant.
“Hiss!”
The flame flared to life, and the sound vanished at once.
But the Oil Lamp in his hand was burning terrifyingly fast. In the blink of an eye, all the blood he had stored inside had been completely consumed.
He immediately extinguished the Oil Lamp and ran for the exit.
But the moment he opened the door, a severed hand clamped around his throat.
The force was so powerful that he instantly could not breathe.
Fortunately, Miss Zhang emerged from the jade pendant at that moment and let out an enraged roar at the severed hand.
The severed hand vanished at once.
But after that one move, Miss Zhang also became visibly drained.
“Yuelang, I can’t go on. From here, you’ll have to rely on yourself,” Miss Zhang said weakly.
It was not that she did not want to fight with everything she had. The other party was simply far stronger than she had imagined. All she had done was block one attack for John.
Yet her reason was already on the verge of being completely wiped away. If she stayed outside any longer, she was afraid she might lose control and hurt John.
“It’s fine. Get some rest.”
John rubbed his throat as he spoke.
Miss Zhang nodded and immediately returned to the jade pendant.
John then took out another severed finger. It was a woman’s finger, its nail painted bright red, as if blood were still dripping from it.
This was the Fiendish Item he had obtained from Jack back then. The Fiend sealed inside it was extremely wicked. Although Jack had been able to control Fiends, his method of using them was far too evil. John had no way of using it himself.
If he forced it, this thing would definitely go out of control in an instant.
Fortunately, the other side seemed to hesitate as well. John immediately put the finger away and seized the chance to run outside with all his strength.
As he ran, he pulled out his phone and called a friend.
“Hello? Bluebird, I need you to look into someone for me!”
“Tell me.”
The voice on the other end was crisp and to the point.
In the movie just now, John hadn’t gotten a clear look at the man’s face, but he had seen the name tag on his chest. He immediately said, “Wang Xu!”
After hanging up, John rushed outside. But by the time he got there, no one was there anymore.
Still, from the traces on the ground, he could tell someone must have been injured.
That was not good news. If someone else died, their situation would become even more dangerous.
But he had no time to dwell on it. He quickly arrived at the little convenience store where Lyu Jicheng had been earlier. The place was spotless, not looking in the least like someone had died there.
Before long, however, he found Lyu Jicheng’s corpse beneath the checkout counter.
Just like the Fiend he had seen back in the movie theater, the body had been chopped into countless pieces, as if the killer had borne some irreconcilable hatred toward him.
John stood up. Seeing that the monitor in front of the register was still on, he immediately began operating it.
Soon, he pulled up the footage. On the screen, Lyu Jicheng, covered in blood, stumbled into the store, his expression filled with panic. He grabbed a bottle of mineral water from the counter and gulped it down. But the moment he finished drinking, his entire body went limp and he collapsed to the floor.
After he passed out, Huang Shiya cautiously emerged from inside the store, holding a kitchen knife. The instant she saw Lyu Jicheng, she seemed to go insane. The knife in her hand rose and fell, rose and fell, over and over again.
She hacked Lyu Jicheng into several pieces by sheer force. Normally speaking, a delicate girl like her should never have been able to do something like that. The bones alone should have caught the blade and made it impossible for her to pull it free. But somehow, she had gained some unknown strength and dismembered Lyu Jicheng.
After doing all that, she turned her head toward the outside, then hurriedly stuffed Lyu Jicheng beneath the checkout counter.
Then she touched her face, not caring in the slightest that blood had smeared onto it, and walked out with a beaming smile.
The camera couldn’t capture the outside, but John could see a hand reaching in from beyond the frame. And the ring on that hand-John recognized it. It belonged to Fu Yang!
Seeing this, thoughts began forming in John’s mind.
Xie Baoguo had been killed by Lyu Jicheng. Lyu Jicheng had been killed by Huang Shiya. Judging from the footage just now, Huang Shiya should have been killed by Fu Yang. But according to that sequence, Fu Yang should have been killed as well-by either Zhao Na or Zhao Ze.
And then, in the end, the person who killed Fu Yang would have been killed by the other one.
At that thought, John suddenly frowned.
If things really were the way he thought, then there should be only one person left!
“Brother Zhao!”
Just then, Huang Shiya suddenly appeared outside. John quickly blocked her way, keeping her from seeing Lyu Jicheng’s corpse.
Huang Shiya didn’t notice any of that. Her face was covered in blood, and she looked extremely agitated as she said, “Brother Zhao! I remembered some of it! A few days ago, when we came to Chongmen Island, we ran into a Terror!”
Hearing that, John knew Huang Shiya must have suffered some kind of mortal danger.
So he immediately pulled Huang Shiya aside and gently comforted her. “Don’t panic. Take it slow. What did you run into?”
“We ran into a Fiend!”
