Chapter 106
Chapter 106
“The easiest way to clear the mission would be for everyone to choose Escapee,” John said. “Then all we’d have to do is walk down the mountain together.”
“I doubt it would be that simple.” Xiaoshuai looked at the fog blanketing the area.
Something terrifying was likely hiding inside it.
John also knew there was no chance of everyone cooperating.
The wealthy people here should not be underestimated. None of them had amassed their fortunes by being fools.
If he could see the obvious solution, so could they. Yet they had no choice but to become Killers.
They could not gamble on everyone choosing Escapee. The moment even one person selected Killer, their lives would no longer be in their own hands.
They would never permit that.
And so they could only choose Killer.
Meanwhile, the contestants fleeing outside had also been drawn into the Fiendish World and presented with the same choice.
Ninety percent of them chose to become Killers as well. They did not stop to consider the drawbacks. They thought only of one thing: now they would be safe!
The instant they selected the Killer faction, they gained an ability-the power to identify Escapees on sight.
Every Killer immediately began hunting for the few remaining Escapees.
Liu Ye received a message from the System at the same time.
[Simply put, this is hide-and-seek. Several thousand people have already volunteered to be “it,” and you’re one of the people being chased. Once you make it down the mountain, you’ll be safe.]
The System’s voice rang inside Liu Ye’s head. It was afraid he might choose Killer, fly into a rampage, and leave the entire mountain empty, so it had assigned him the Escapee faction without asking.
Liu Ye did not mind. Hide-and-seek? He was good at that. He had always been excellent at this game.
There was only one problem.
“What about him?”
Liu Ye looked at No. 1, whose face had turned a ghastly shade of blue-purple.
“Look at the state he’s in. If he doesn’t get emergency treatment soon, he’s not going to make it.”
Liu Ye was a caring man. How could he abandon an injured person?
The System said nothing.
It had a feeling the man in question did not particularly want Liu Ye’s help.
Liu Ye stared at the fog and frowned. He had never had much of a sense of direction. In weather like this, finding his way was even more hopeless.
“What kind of huge tourist attraction doesn’t even have a bathroom?”
The System fell silent again.
Please stop talking. I’m not even human, and you’re still making me sick.
But Liu Ye’s complaint gave the System an idea. Sometimes, there was nothing wrong with sacrificing a pawn.
It forcibly dragged No. 1 into the Fiendish World, overdrew his points, and used them to buy an antidote that cured him.
[I’ve cured his poisoning. Feel free to torment him as much as you like. Don’t hold back-just make sure you don’t kill him.]
Liu Ye stared blankly.
The System made him sound like some unforgivable villain. He was clearly a good person.
[One last thing: whatever happens, you cannot let the Killers catch you. If they catch you, you lose. When you see them, run for your life. Understand?]
The System felt tremendously clever for coming up with a way to restrain this man.
Liu Ye nodded to show that he understood.
The System vanished.
The moment it was gone, however, Liu Ye muttered to himself.
“Running away the whole time sounds awfully passive. Brother Guiwa always said the best defense is a good offense!”
And so Liu Ye picked up a shovel and dragged No. 1 into the forest.
Not long afterward, a Killer came running over with a combat knife. According to his map, there was an Escapee nearby.
He advanced several more steps. The map refreshed the Escapee’s location, and delight flooded his face.
There were actually two Escapees here!
He quickened his pace, eager to kill them both before anyone else discovered them.
After walking a short distance, he spotted a rope dangling from a large tree. An unconscious man had been tied to it, and a patch of earth directly beneath him was visibly different from the surrounding ground.
“Heh. Who would fall for such an idiotic trap?”
The man scoffed and circled behind the tree, intending to cut the captive down and kill him from there.
The moment he came within five meters of the trunk, the ground gave way beneath his feet. He plummeted into a pit with a crash.
The fall left his head spinning. He could hardly believe it. He had clearly avoided the trap!
Then he looked up.
The man fell silent.
What kind of lunatic dug out the entire area around a tree and left only the obvious trap untouched? Didn’t he find that exhausting?
A head appeared over the edge of the pit.
The man recognized the face. Wasn’t this the brat who had force-fed No. 1 feces?
The thought sent a violent shudder through him.
He clamped both hands over his mouth. Then he remembered that he was a Killer. An Escapee was forbidden from harming him, so what was there to fear?
His arrogance instantly returned.
“Listen here, brat! Let me out, and I might leave your corpse in one piece. Otherwise, once I get up there, I’ll tear you limb from limb!”
He could feel himself growing stronger with every passing moment. Soon, a pit this shallow would be nothing. He could leap straight out.
He sneered up at Liu Ye.
Liu Ye turned away, then came back holding a shovel piled high with steaming ammunition.
The man’s face went blank.
“Brother, we can talk this over.”
“Brother! Brother! No! Please, no!”
Some time later, the man lay unconscious and foaming at the mouth in a patch of earth now bursting with vitality.
Liu Ye wiped the sweat from his brow and looked in satisfaction at the disorderly pack of animals behind him.
Rabbits, tigers, black bears, elk, and all manner of other creatures were eating as they diligently manufactured ammunition for him.
As for why they were so obedient…
[Fiendish Item: Shepherd’s Flute]
[Type: Musical Instrument]
[Quality: Ghost]
[Effect: Controls animals. Its precise effectiveness depends on intelligence.]
[Note: This item never imagined it would one day be used for something like this. It wants to die.]
The flute was a reward the System had given Liu Ye after Rat Granny died.
At the time, however, the System had not possessed voice controls, so it had simply placed the item in his bundle.
While digging his trap earlier, Liu Ye had suddenly felt that a pit alone might not pack enough punch.
Then he remembered the sight of No. 1 vomiting, and inspiration struck!
He had the strategy, but not nearly enough of the crucial material.
So he emptied his bundle and searched through everything inside until he found the Shepherd’s Flute.
He gave it an experimental blow. Sure enough, it worked. Animals poured out of the forest in an overwhelming tide.
Liu Ye was overjoyed. He immediately ordered every last one of them to produce ammunition at full capacity!
