Chapter 147
Chapter 147
In moments, the entire meal had been pumped into the woman’s stomach.
She was awake now. She had no choice. If she remained unconscious any longer, she would die.
“Wh-what are you doing?” she demanded, her speech slurred.
“Feeding you. Are you full, ma’am? If not, we can have some more.”
“Stop!”
She sat up quickly and glared at Liu Ye with venomous eyes.
She had intended to wait until night, but she could endure no more.
The woman chanted a rapid incantation, then smiled darkly.
“Liu Ye, will you promise me one thing?”
“Of course. What do you need?”
Delight filled her heart. The instant Liu Ye voiced his agreement, she could act.
Pink light flared in her eyes. Black smoke poured from her body and surged toward him.
“Where’s that smoke coming from?”
Frowning, Liu Ye waved it away.
Slap! Slap!
Two handprints appeared on the woman’s face, and her cheeks swelled visibly.
The black smoke trembled, then tried once more to enter Liu Ye.
He swept both hands back and forth, slapping at the smoke while searching for the source of the fire.
Slap! Slap! Slap! Slap!
The black smoke withdrew, quivering.
After failing to find any flames, Liu Ye looked up and jumped in fright.
“Ma’am, am I seeing things? You look much heavier, and your skin has turned rosy.”
She stared at him.
“All thanks to you,” she mumbled through swollen lips.
“You mean it’s all because of me? Hahaha! You’re too kind. I’m not that good.” Liu Ye scratched his head and beamed.
She was not praising him!
Weeping inwardly, the woman lay back down. She gave up. She could not win against this brat and would have to wait for another opportunity.
Outside the room, Wang Fugui felt enlightenment descend upon him.
So that was the secret.
Their identity as caregivers provided Protection. Liu Ye had deliberately enraged his patient so she would attack him, allowing the employee badge to reflect the damage back at her.
Brilliant! He had found a way through the mission in so little time.
Wang Fugui understood the essence of Liu Ye’s demonstration. Now he only needed an air pump.
After searching around, he found a toilet plunger in the restroom.
“The principle should be the same, right?”
…
Lunch ended, and a nurse collected the trays. The caregivers received one hour to eat in the cafeteria downstairs.
As everyone left the wards, a man suddenly collapsed.
“Aaaah!”
He clutched his leg and screamed. It was Guo Xiaojun, the caregiver assigned to Ward 03.
His leg had bent at a ninety-degree angle.
Director Jia arrived with several nurses and frowned.
“Idiot. Carry him away.”
Three male nurses dragged the wailing man into the elevator.
A chill swept through the others. They had clearly seen him merely trip and fall. Why had his leg broken so catastrophically?
The caregivers entered the cafeteria with heavy hearts. The food was plentiful, and they could take as much as they wanted, but no one had much appetite. They collected small portions and gathered at one table.
Wang Fugui wanted to sit beside Liu Ye, but every inch of Liu Ye’s table was covered with food.
“What does everyone think?” Li Wei asked.
They used the break to exchange information.
“I saw the nurse’s assignment sheet. Guo Xiaojun’s patient suffers from osteoporosis.” Li Wei stirred the food in his bowl as he considered what happened.
Guo Xiaojun cared for a patient with brittle bones, then broke his own leg simply walking out the door. Only an idiot would call that a coincidence.
“He wasn’t wearing his employee badge,” Wang Fugui said. He had noticed through the ward window that Guo Xiaojun left it on the bed.
“Is he an idiot?” one woman asked. The rules explicitly said never to remove it.
“So taking off the badge causes us to contract our patients’ illnesses?” Sun Miao asked.
Everyone shuddered. They had witnessed those horrifying conditions. Contracting one would be a fate worse than death.
Wang Fugui shared the message from the Notebook. None of the players had conflicting objectives, and he knew he was not clever enough to solve this mission alone. He wanted to hear their opinions.
Wang Weiwei likewise shared her note and recounted what happened in the elevator. In her view, they were all struggling to survive the Fiendish World and should help one another.
Li Wei noticed that both accounts pointed toward Liu Ye.
The man was strange. Li Wei had initially suspected a Fiend had infiltrated their group, but Liu Ye did not behave like one. Wang Fugui and Wang Weiwei also said that he had saved their lives, which suggested he was on their side.
Was Liu Ye the path to survival?
Li Wei was uncertain. That seemed far too simple.
Although his expression did not change as he listened, his spoon began stirring faster.
He had found a different note in his room.
It contained four handwritten instructions:
1. Do not believe anything Director Jia says.
2. Do not take the medicine.
3. If you encounter trouble, seek help from the person wearing a red wristband.
4. Do not press the green button.
Every instruction contradicted the Caregiver Rules. Which set should they believe?
The handbook made clear that the badge was their Protection, and Guo Xiaojun had proved that point. But what about the rest?
Confusion pressed against Li Wei’s mind. He forced it down. Panic killed faster than any Fiend in a mission like this.
Ring! Ring!
A bell sounded through the cafeteria. Everyone stood. It meant they had to return to their wards immediately.
Then they saw Liu Ye carrying his tray toward the sinks.
