Chapter 153
Chapter 153
“I doubt any of you followed every one of those rules perfectly, did you?”
The others looked embarrassed. It was not that they had not wanted to obey, but putting every rule into practice had simply been too difficult.
“Once the infection takes hold, our identities change. We stop being caregivers and become patients. And patients have to obey what’s written on this note.”
“Wait!”
Wang Weiwei suddenly shouted.
“It says we can’t take the medicine, but Sister Han told me that the medicine is the only way to control our conditions.”
“That was probably a lie. The Caregiver Rules explicitly say not to believe anything a patient tells you.”
Li Wei trusted his own judgment. If the woman’s story was false, then he himself might not have been infected yet, which meant his plan to switch badges could still work.
“Impossible! I don’t believe Sister Han would lie to me!” Wang Weiwei said, rising to her feet.
“Whether you believe me is your choice. I’ve merely given you my assessment. My advice is this: since we’re all becoming patients, remember not to take the medicine, do not trust Director Jia again, and do not press the green button.”
With that, Li Wei picked up his tray and walked to the sink. He had said everything that needed saying. Whether the others listened was their problem.
His gaze settled on the young man playing games in the kitchen. Apparently, the brat was the kitchen supervisor’s brother-in-law. Both his identity and the difficulty of targeting him made him by far the easiest place to start.
Meanwhile, Wang Weiwei looked at the others.
“You aren’t actually planning to listen to him, are you?”
Wang Fugui and the rest exchanged glances without answering. In truth, they were inclined to believe Li Wei. Compared with Wang Weiwei, he was far more reliable.
“Hmph. Fine, don’t believe me. I still know Sister Han would never deceive me.”
After clearing her tray, she walked over to Liu Ye, who was still eating heartily.
“Brother Liu, there’s something I want to tell you.”
Liu Ye had helped her during the previous mission. Now that she had obtained important information, she felt obligated to share it with him.
Once she finished explaining everything, Wang Weiwei looked at Liu Ye expectantly. She was certain he would believe her.
Instead, Liu Ye responded with heartbroken dismay.
“You’re saying you took the patient’s medicine? Good heavens.”
He rubbed his head in anguish. How did that saying go again? Right-a pig of a teammate!
“That medicine belonged to someone else. What were you doing taking it?”
Wang Weiwei assumed that, like Li Wei, Liu Ye did not believe her. She asked resentfully, “Brother Liu, you don’t believe me either?”
“I never said I didn’t believe you. But no matter what happened, you can’t take a patient’s medicine! We’re caregivers. Our job is to care for people. Being sick and hospitalized is already hard enough, and I’ve heard hospital treatment costs a fortune. Yet you went and ate her medicine… Honestly!”
Liu Ye found his situation unbearably difficult. More importantly, would her actions implicate him? What if Director Jia decided that everyone in this batch behaved the same way? Liu Ye might lose his job!
Wang Weiwei was baffled, but she could at least tell that Liu Ye did not support her.
Frustration welled inside her. She had survived several missions by now, but she had always been a bystander who cleared them by clinging to stronger players. Her score had been low every time.
This time was different. She felt as though she had uncovered a hidden mission and could clear it through her own abilities.
She did not want to rely on other people forever. Even the strongest support could one day collapse. She wanted to survive in the Fiendish World through her own efforts!
At that moment, a pink light shone in Wang Weiwei’s eyes.
“Liu Ye, I’m sticking to my decision. I hope you’ll consider it too. Thank you for taking care of me during the last mission.”
Wang Weiwei turned and left, leaving Liu Ye utterly baffled. Had she gotten addicted to taking other people’s medicine? Once was not enough, and now she wanted to keep doing it? This was no longer a question of professional conduct. It was a moral failing!
Liu Ye had lost his appetite. He cleared his tray, greeted the Chef, and went to find Director Jia.
Bang!
“Director!”
Liu Ye flung the door open. Inside, Director Jia hastily threw his arms around his monitor. When he saw that the intruder was Liu Ye, he spoke irritably.
“What are you doing here?”
The man had nearly scared him out of his wits. He had thought the higher-ups had come to conduct an inspection.
“Director, there’s something I need to tell you.”
Liu Ye started forward, but Director Jia hurriedly stopped him.
“Wait. Don’t come over yet!”
Director Jia quickly shut down the computer and hitched up his trousers.
“All right. What is it?”
“Director, I wanted to ask whether the medicine our patients take is expensive.”
“Why are you asking?”
Director Jia narrowed his eyes. He secretly took out an instrument and glanced at it. When he saw that its needle had not moved, he put it away.
“Well, you know how someone was handing out medicine this morning? One of the pills fell on the floor and got dirty. I figured the patient couldn’t take it anymore, so I wanted to ask how much a replacement would cost. If necessary, you can deduct it from my… from Wang Weiwei’s salary.”
Liu Ye felt that he had worried himself sick over these people. But what choice did he have? He was the Saintly Father, after all. Of course, everything else could be discussed, but when money was involved, the accounts still had to be settled properly.
“I see…”
Director Jia rubbed his chin. The measuring device had shown nothing wrong with Liu Ye’s body, so he did not question the explanation.
“The medicine isn’t expensive, and there’s no need to dock your salary. You can have as much as you want. But listen carefully: you must give every dose to the patients on time. If a patient misses the medicine…” He chuckled darkly. “You’ll be the ones who suffer.”
Liu Ye relaxed at once. As long as it was not expensive, the situation could still be fixed.
“Then give me five hundred pills to start with, Director.”
Director Jia stared at him.
“What are you planning, a wholesale operation? Are you trying to run some private business on the side?”
“No. I’m only worried there won’t be enough.”
“Get out!”
“Sure thing!”
Liu Ye slunk away. The director was unbelievably stingy. If the pills were cheap, what harm would it do to give him a few more?
At that moment, Wang Weiwei had returned from the cafeteria and told the woman everything that had happened.
“Sister Han, they’re awful! How could they think that of you?”
The woman merely smiled.
“Weiwei, they don’t mean any harm. Coming here means being surrounded by danger at every turn. It’s good for them to be careful.”
“They only think that because they don’t know you,” Wang Weiwei said.
She did not understand why she felt such an immediate bond with Sister Han. She wanted to share everything in her heart with the woman, almost as if Sister Han were family.
“All right, don’t be angry. Here, have some water and get a little more sleep.”
A loving smile appeared on Sister Han’s face as she set a cup beside Wang Weiwei. Wang Weiwei drained it in one gulp.
Then she collapsed onto the bed and sank into a deep sleep.
She did not notice the necklace around her neck flash once.
