Chapter 156
Chapter 156
The nurse stared at him.
That did not reassure her at all.
Liu Ye approached the man’s bed.
“Sir, I have some bad news.”
“What bad news?”
“For certain reasons, we’ve run out of anesthetic. That means we’ll have to operate without anesthesia.”
The man stared at him.
“Th-then what do you have?” he asked pitifully.
Liu Ye patted his chest and gave him a thumbs-up.
“You have me!”
The man remained silent.
What use was Liu Ye? He wanted anesthetic!
“Thank you, but I’ve decided not to seek treatment.”
He started to rise. Liu Ye answered with another massive slap, knocking him unconscious instantly.
“Honestly, why is he avoiding medical treatment? When you’re sick, you have to get treated.”
Liu Ye turned to the nurse beside him.
“I’m guessing his condition is caused by those knives in his head. We should be able to cure him by pulling them out.”
The nurse stared at him.
Had this man forgotten he was only pretending to be a doctor? Then again, the patient was a Fiend. Pulling out a few knives probably would not matter much.
“Come on. Let’s perform the operation.”
Liu Ye felt quite confident about this surgery. He vaguely remembered performing a similar operation when he was a child.
He grabbed one of the knives in the man’s head and yanked it free.
Splurt!
Black, pus-filled blood sprayed endlessly from the wound.
The nurse stared at him.
The patient might be a Fiend, but did Liu Ye really have to rip the knife out with his bare hands?
Though unconscious, the man’s body began trembling instinctively. Liu Ye responded with another massive slap, and the man immediately went still.
Liu Ye swiftly pulled out the other two knives, poured alcohol over the wounds to disinfect them, then wrapped the man’s head in gauze.
Perfect!
The nurse stared at the result.
Yes, it was perfect. As she watched the Fiend’s spectral body begin to dissipate, her own head throbbed in waves.
“Miss Nurse? Miss… Hm? What’s wrong? Does your head hurt too? Would you like me to treat it?”
The question nearly scared the nurse to death.
“I-I’m fine. All right, there’s nothing else for you to do here. You should go back now.”
“Miss Nurse, if you need my help, don’t be shy. I think I’m actually pretty good at this.”
Without another word, the nurse ripped the doctor’s badge from Liu Ye’s neck and shoved him out.
“Miss Nur-”
Bang!
The door slammed shut. Liu Ye was speechless. Talk about tossing someone aside the moment she’d gotten what she needed.
He curled his lip, took the elevator, and returned upstairs.
At the same time, the sound of meat being chopped echoed ceaselessly from the kitchen in the first-floor cafeteria.
Only Li Wei’s head remained. It sat on a chopping block while he stared red-eyed at the red cords around the Chef’s and the kitchen supervisor’s brother-in-law’s wrists.
He had been careless.
After his argument with Wang Weiwei, he had seized an opportunity to enter the kitchen and ambush the Chef’s relative. Instead, the young man had immediately turned the tables and killed him.
Li Wei had assumed that everyone outside the wards was a normal person. He had never imagined that at least two-thirds of the hospital staff were Fiends.
He had been forced to watch as they dismembered his body, cooked it into dishes, and fed it back to him one bite at a time.
Despair filled his eyes. Countless heads like his sat inside a cabinet nearby, trophies collected by the two Fiends. No one knew how much time had passed, but every one of them remained alive in endless agony.
And that agony might continue far, far into the future…
Meanwhile, the moment Liu Ye returned upstairs, he was informed that he had been promoted.
“A promotion?”
Liu Ye was delighted, but he remained a little worried. The last time he had been promoted, he had lost his job soon afterward. He had worked for several days and failed to earn a single cent.
“Director, I’m very happy about the promotion, but the salary…”
“Five thousand! I’ll pay you five thousand a month!” Director Jia declared, slapping the desk.
He valued Liu Ye because, out of everyone in this batch, Liu Ye had performed the best. Even now, he showed no sign of infection.
Director Jia therefore intended to promote him. Their staffing shortage was worsening, and the day that thing erupted was drawing ever closer. They could not allow anything to go wrong with these patients.
“The amount doesn’t really matter. I only wanted to ask if I could have an advance.”
“Fine. I’ll transfer this month’s salary to your payroll card now.”
The brat was never getting out of this place anyway, so it did not matter how much money they gave him.
Liu Ye nodded excitedly. Motivation surged through him. That was five thousand yuan!
Humming a tune, he entered the old woman’s ward. She was not asleep but propped against the headboard, watching television.
“Breaking news: a potion known as Desire is currently circulating on the market. This substance causes severe physical damage and can produce irritability, impulsiveness, and other harmful psychological effects after consumption. The nation has now classified the Desire Potion as contraband. Anyone who consumes it without authorization may face life imprisonment or even the death penalty…”
Liu Ye could not help sighing at the report. People these days were truly awful, making all kinds of dangerous things. He had seen the Desire Potion before. It had been in that woman’s room when he first met her.
She had been perfectly fine, yet she had insisted on drinking that stuff until it made her stupid.
“By the way, ma’am, I have some bad news. We’re short-handed, so I won’t be able to care for only you anymore.”
The old woman was instantly overjoyed.
“Then what’s the bad news?” she asked eagerly.
“The bad news is… That’s what I just told you.”
“Ha ha ha! Good, good. Don’t worry about me. Go take care of the others. Ha ha ha…”
Liu Ye stared at her.
What an irritating old woman.
“By the way, are you familiar with all the patients on this floor?”
Now that Liu Ye had been promoted, he felt he ought to understand the circumstances of everyone on the floor.
“Of course!”
Even if the old woman knew nothing, she would pretend she did. Anything that sent this plague of a man away from her was worth doing.
“Take the patient in Ward 07. Heh. He’s a vicious online troll. He used to be extremely famous on the internet. People called him the number-one keyboard warrior in the Xia Kingdom.”
“He’s that impressive?” Liu Ye asked in amazement.
“You bet. Do you know Li Lianlian? The actress who’s been popular lately?”
“Sure. The Old Man loves watching her shows.”
“Well, that patient indirectly caused her death. She was a good girl, and I heard her family had it rough. After she became an actress and finally made some money, he accused her of having a sugar daddy and spread the story as though he had proof. How could a young woman withstand that kind of abuse? She developed depression and eventually took her own life.”
“What? Couldn’t she explain the truth?”
“She did, but who believed her? Plenty of people can’t stand to see someone else doing well. Even when they know white is white, they’ll deliberately call it black. They think they’re righteous while doing everything they can to smear a person. Then, once tragedy strikes, they start shouting about freedom of speech. ‘You can control heaven and earth, but can you control what I say? She was the one too weak to handle it.’ And just like that, someone dies while every person responsible disappears.”
