Chapter 28

In the second-floor hallway, beneath one of the windows, Maotu crouched under the windowsill, trembling all over. Tears streamed from her eyes as she clapped both hands over her mouth, not daring to make the slightest sound.

She was not a coward. She was also a player of the Fiendish World, and her level was even the same as Xiaoshuai’s-Level 4. Otherwise, she never would have been able to join the Twelve Zodiacs.

In an ordinary Fiendish World, she might not be able to handle everything with ease, but keeping herself alive was never a problem.

This time, however, was different. The Fiend downstairs had clearly exceeded what she could endure.

It was on a completely different level from any Fiend she had ever encountered.

Their organization divided Fiends into seven grades, from F to S. Each of them carried a detector, and just now, the number displayed on her detector had been, shockingly, A!

She did have a few life-saving Fiendish Items on her, but against the thing downstairs, those Fiendish Items were completely useless. At most, they could buy her three seconds.

“Wh-what do I do? What do I do?”

Right now, she did not even dare move, terrified that she might provoke it.

Down below, Yinhu had already been devoured completely. The Old Man had returned to the apartment building.

Maotu cautiously poked her head out and looked down. Seeing no one below, she decided to jump from the second floor. A height like this was still easy for her.

She quickly stood up, but in that instant, her entire body suddenly went rigid.

Because she felt herself being watched.

“I’m finished!”

Maotu’s heart clenched. Then she stiffly turned her head and saw a pitch-black shadow standing in front of her.

“B… B-grade!”

The number on the detector chilled Maotu from head to toe. It was another high-level Fiend!

How was this possible? Why would high-level Fiends gather in the same place?

And in the brief moment she froze, she suddenly realized that the dark figure had moved closer.

“Not good!”

She instantly took out a nail the size of her palm and threw it at the Shadow Fiend.

The nail pierced into the Shadow Fiend’s body, instantly immobilizing it.

Maotu seized that chance and leapt outside.

After landing, she quickly mounted the motorcycle parked by the roadside and sped toward their base. As long as she made it back there, she would be safe.

An hour later, she successfully entered the base.

The moment she saw the base gates, she knew she was safe. She let out a breath of relief and hurried inside.

“Maotu, what happened? Why are you in such a panic? Weren’t you out on a date?”

After entering the base, she came to the corridor, where a familiar staff member walked over and teased her.

“Don’t ask. Hurry and report this to the higher-ups. I encountered two high-level Fiends in the city.”

“High-level Fiends? Tell me the details.” The staff member immediately realized the seriousness of the situation and asked at once.

“One of them was an old man. His grade was A. The other was a pitch-black Fiend. I couldn’t see its appearance clearly, but it was B-grade.”

Maotu spoke with lingering fear. But just then, a faint, eerie voice drifted by her ear.

“Pitch-black? Do you mean like me?”

Maotu whipped around. To her horror, the staff member from moments ago had already turned pitch-black from head to toe.

The surrounding walls began to crack. Piece after piece of plaster peeled away, and very soon, they had transformed back into the hallway of the apartment building.

“No…”

Maotu murmured.

The Shadow Fiend opened its enormous mouth, as large as her entire body, and swallowed her in an instant.
“Crack!”

…

On the fourth floor of the apartment building, Xiaoshuai stood outside Room 404. He found it a little strange. Why hadn’t those guys shown up yet?

He had sent the others a text, and they had replied.

“There are a few troublesome ones over here. Give me a moment. -Yinhu”

“Hee-hee, I still want to play a little longer. I’ll be right over-Maotu”

As for Haizhu, he hadn’t sent a message at all.

Xiaoshuai frowned. Those people were technically his subordinates, but their strength was about the same as his, so they weren’t particularly willing to obey him.

He couldn’t exactly force them to follow his orders, either. After all, he still had to compete with the other team leaders.

“Damn it.”

Xiaoshuai decided not to worry about all that for now. He activated his skill and sniffed around the room first. After confirming there was no real danger inside, he took out a piece of wire, picked the lock, and slipped in quietly.

The rooms in Rose Apartment were all fairly small, only about sixty square meters or so. And because Liu Ye and the Shadow Fiend were sharing the place, even the living room had been converted into a bedroom.

Liu Ye lived in the living room. At the moment, he was sleeping soundly, completely unaware that someone had entered.

Xiaoshuai held a syringe in his hand and crept toward Liu Ye.

This was a drug produced by their organization. Once injected, it would allow them to control the target.

“Tap!”

A sudden sound rang out, as if a bead had fallen to the floor.

Xiaoshuai was so startled that he instantly crouched down, staring warily at Liu Ye. But Liu Ye was still fast asleep.

“A coincidence?”

Xiaoshuai slowly approached Liu Ye. Looking at Liu Ye sleeping, he suddenly drove the syringe downward.

But in that instant, the blanket covering Liu Ye actually flew up on its own, wrapping around Xiaoshuai’s arm like a rope.

“What?”

Xiaoshuai was shocked. He quickly pulled a mirror from his backpack.

[Fiendish Item: Fiendish Mirror]

[Type: Mirror]

[Quality: Ghost]

[Special Effect: Can seal Fiends inside the mirror]

[Resurgence: 95%]

[Note: Come at me!!!]

Xiaoshuai held up the mirror and shone it on the blanket. The blanket was instantly sucked into the mirror.

“Crack!”

Another crack appeared on the surface of the mirror. At the same time, it became covered in bloody handprints, as if something was about to crawl out from inside at any second.

Xiaoshuai sighed, then put the mirror away.

All Fiendish Items carried the risk of resurgence. His mirror was extremely useful, but it was already close to the critical point.

Still, it wasn’t impossible to suppress. As long as a Fiendish Item was given enough blood offerings, its level of resurgence could be reduced.

And these so-called blood offerings were living people. Ordinary animals were useless to Fiends. Only humans were the most perfect food for Fiends.

But this method had one drawback: after every blood sacrifice, the Fiendish Item would require more and more offerings.

For a mirror like his, if he wanted to lower its resurgence again, he would need at least two hundred people.

In today’s society, that was no small number.

After dealing with the bedsheet, Xiaoshuai continued walking toward Liu Ye. He had already expected the other party to have a Fiendish Item for self-defense. But that didn’t matter. Liu Ye was alone, while Xiaoshuai had four people on his side. There was no way Liu Ye could outlast them.

Thinking this, he raised his hand again-only for a voice to suddenly sound beside his ear.

“Don’t move.”
