Chapter 146

Wang Fugui became increasingly anxious. Afraid of violating the first rule, he did not dare force the patient to eat.

Then he saw Liu Ye walking past the door.

“Brother!”

Liu Ye turned curiously. “Do you need something?”

Wang Fugui nodded and pulled him into the room.

“Brother, my patient refuses to eat. Can you help me think of a solution?”

“She won’t eat? That’s easy.”

Liu Ye pressed the green button.

Commotion erupted outside. Director Jia burst into the ward carrying several bags of equipment.

The moment he saw Liu Ye, rage filled his face.

“You again?”

He had noticed the signal came from another room and deliberately brought the equipment this time. Yet somehow, the same idiot was responsible.

“Why are you here? She isn’t your assigned patient.”

“Director, they asked me to help. She won’t eat, so we wanted permission to use special measures.”

Director Jia stared at him.

“That’s all?”

“Isn’t that serious?”

Brother Guiwa had taught Liu Ye to consult his superiors constantly at work instead of making decisions without authorization. If something went wrong, management could shield him. If something went right, he could share the credit so they would not suppress him.

Liu Ye already had a solution, but he could not act without giving his superior a chance to participate.

Director Jia looked angry, but he must secretly be delighted. Brother Guiwa always said leaders wore one face in public and another in private.

Director Jia took a deep breath and silently reminded himself that Liu Ye had powerful connections and had been sent by someone above him. He could not casually kill the man.

“Fine! But I’m warning you: handle minor matters yourselves. This is the last time. Press that button over nothing again, and I will kill you. Understand?”

“Yes. But how should I contact you if something happens?”

“Come to my office. It’s upstairs.”

Director Jia stormed away.

Liu Ye was extremely satisfied. This was the advantage of maintaining a good relationship with one’s director: he could now handle minor issues himself.

He looked at the object in his hands. There was no need to seek further permission before using it.

Wang Fugui swallowed nervously. “The director isn’t angry, is he?”

He feared Director Jia might lose his temper and kill them both.

“Of course not. The director is very broad-minded. Now come inside, and I’ll demonstrate professional caregiving techniques. And don’t blame me for saying this, but shouldn’t you have studied before starting the job? How can you perform well without any preparation? Even if you get hired, how long can you last?”

Liu Ye spoke with heartfelt disappointment. Young people in Huicheng were far too impetuous. In his opinion, everyone should be more grounded and diligent.

What could Wang Fugui say? He nodded repeatedly.

“And remember: we must treat patients with the same warmth we show our families. Once they feel comfortable, they’ll cooperate.”

“Brother, I understand all that. I just want to know why you’re holding an air-pump hose.”
“You don’t understand. Every patient is different. Sometimes we need special tools to help them.”

No matter how hard Wang Fugui thought, he could not imagine any connection between an air-pump hose and eating.

“Your problem is a lack of experience. When I cared for my great-grandfather, he was so ill that he couldn’t swallow anything. I used this to serve all three of his meals every day.”

So Liu Ye was an experienced professional. Wang Fugui resolved to study carefully. A veteran player had once told him that in role-playing missions, the more closely someone embodied his assigned profession, the better his chance of survival.

“I’ll prepare everything first. Come over in a little while.”

Liu Ye left the room.

If Wang Fugui intended to learn, he ought to take notes. He searched the cabinets for paper and a pen and discovered a Notebook wedged beside the bedside table.

He opened it absently and found a message.

“Friend, by the time you read this Notebook, I may have already forgotten writing it. I hope this record will help you.”

Wang Fugui’s expression changed. By sheer coincidence, he had found a crucial clue. He read on eagerly.

“Friend, I wish I could record everything that happened to me, but certain circumstances make that impossible. I can only leave you the most important information.

“First: obey every line of the Caregiver Rules. Never violate a single rule. If you do, find Director Jia immediately. Above all, never believe anything a patient tells you. They are enemies, not friends.

“Second: confirm your identity. This is extremely important. You are a caregiver, so you must fulfill a caregiver’s duties. That is the central condition of this mission. Never forget it.

“Third: if something happens, you may seek Director Jia’s help, but do not believe him. He is not a good person.

“Fourth: this floor is both the safest and the most dangerous place in the hospital. Do not visit other floors unless absolutely necessary.”

The remaining pages had been torn out, but this was enough.

Wang Fugui now trusted Liu Ye even more. Only now did he realize that Liu Ye had been secretly demonstrating the key to the mission all along: their professional identities.

The mission centered on caregiving, so naturally the solution lay in behaving like a caregiver.

He hurried out to observe Liu Ye’s methods.

Through the windows in the ward doors, he saw how the others handled lunch. Some fed their patients one spoonful at a time. Other patients ate by themselves.

And one caregiver was pumping air into his patient’s mouth with a hose.

Pumping air?

Wang Fugui pressed his face to the glass.

Liu Ye had poured the entire meal into a tube. One end rested in the elderly woman’s mouth; the other was attached to an air pump.

“Heh, heh, heh…”

Liu Ye encouraged himself while pumping food into the patient. The meal surged through the tube. Her body flopped across the bed like a fish dragged onto land.

Wang Fugui stared in horror.

Was this what Liu Ye meant by treating patients with the warmth of family?

Someone call the police! A crime was happening here!

Liu Ye always felt that he was a good person-specifically, a paragon of filial piety. When it came to his mother, he was exceptionally devoted.
