Chapter 229
Chapter 229
He had prepared these two inheritance documents long ago. One named John as the heir, while the other named Xiaoshuai.
Ever since Second Uncle switched the two children, he had kept watch over the child sent away. He was also the one who arranged every aspect of Xiaoshuai’s education. Even Xiaoshuai’s entry into the Illuminati had been guided by him.
Xiaoshuai was his reserve candidate, so of course he had made careful arrangements. No matter which candidate suffered an accident, he would still be able to retake control of the Zhao Group.
After retrieving the documents, he slept in the villa. He planned to visit the Group first thing the next morning and transfer the shares.
Morning soon arrived. He climbed into the car, took out Xiaoshuai’s phone, and checked the time. Just then, a news notification appeared.
Curious, he opened it.
“In our latest report, Zhao Wuchang, head of the Zhao Group, was attacked last night. Fortunately, Mr. Zhao Wuchang escaped serious danger and was declared stable late last night. The assailant was reportedly the popular celebrity Xu Fei. His actions appear to be connected to a past grievance involving the Zhao family…”
Zhao Wuchang stared blankly at the screen. He opened the attached video. The footage had no sound. Not long after Xu Fei entered, he raised his gun and fired twice into Zhao Wuchang’s body.
Xu Fei then walked over to the fallen body, deliberately glanced at the camera, and smiled.
“Bastard!”
Zhao Wuchang immediately realized that Xu Fei had played him. The little bastard had discovered his identity long ago and deliberately laid this trap!
The inheritance documents in his hands were now worthless.
The night before, John had still been kneeling on the floor in grief when a weak voice spoke.
“Stop shouting and call a doctor. Otherwise, I really will die.”
John jerked his head up. His “grandfather” was staring at him with an amused smile.
“Come on. Call me Grandpa!”
“You bastard!”
John rushed forward and tried to punch him, but when he saw the man’s injuries, he knew this was not the time. He hurriedly contacted the Fiend Investigation Bureau and told them to send doctors.
“You planned this from the beginning?”
While they waited for the ambulance, John helped Xiaoshuai stem the bleeding and could not resist asking.
“I’d only call it a backup plan. If your plan failed, this was the best possible outcome,” Xiaoshuai replied weakly.
“When did you discover your origins?”
“Hmm… when we received this mission, I suppose.”
Liu Ye had joined the mission in the guise of a fortune-teller, while every other participant had some connection to the Zhao family. So what about Xiaoshuai? Why had he been chosen for the mission?
Once he recalled the story John had told in the car, Xiaoshuai began to suspect the truth.
“You gambled everything on a suspicion? Weren’t you afraid the System might go haywire?”
“In the Fiendish World, survival means gambling your life against death. If I wasn’t willing to take even this chance, I might as well have died outright.”
“Bastard!”
“Hey, hey! I’m wounded! And tell those doctors to hurry. I don’t have any Substitute Scarecrows left. If this keeps up, I really am going to die!”
Back in the present, Zhao Wuchang realized that his current identity was useless.
It did not matter. He still had another option.
He searched the phone and found a photograph. The person in it was Liu Ye!
Outside the police station, Liu Ye walked through the doors. Brother Driver had already returned ahead of him.
The officers inside had not made things difficult for Liu Ye at all. What did a little speeding matter? None of the cases Liu Ye had wreck-solved were ever small. His reputation as the Human Nuclear Warhead was hardly undeserved. Last month, the precinct covering Fortune-Telling Street had collected so many bonuses they could barely hold them all.
The New Year was approaching. Everyone wanted to earn a little extra, put better food on the table for their children, or buy their wives a new piece of clothing. Now that Liu Ye had finally come to their jurisdiction, of course they treated him with the utmost courtesy.
And so Liu Ye spent a thoroughly comfortable night at the station. Once the officers learned that he had been telling fortunes for the Zhao Group, they knew what to expect. This would be a major case-far too large for a single precinct to handle.
They released Liu Ye the next morning, then immediately began reporting up the chain that a major case was about to break.
When Liu Ye stepped outside, a car pulled to a stop in front of him. He looked up.
“Sir, who are you?”
Good grief. The man was this old and still driving a taxi?
“Liu Ye, what are you talking about? I’m Xu Fei!”
“Xu Fei? Sir, you must be joking. You look more like Xu Fei’s grandfather.”
Zhao Wuchang’s heart jolted. Remembering what Second Uncle had told him, he wondered if this kid truly possessed some ability.
“Liu Ye, I really am Xu Fei.”
As soon as he finished speaking, he secretly activated the Yin-Yang Secret Codex within him. Black light enveloped his body.
Liu Ye frowned and studied him carefully. The man really did seem to be Xu Fei. But how had he ended up looking like this? It had only been one night…
Wait. One night?
Liu Ye abruptly thought of something. He climbed into the car and spoke earnestly.
“Fei, I’m not trying to lecture you, but as your brother-in-law, I have to say this. You’re newly married, so it’s normal to get carried away. Still, you need to consider what your body can handle. You already had some problems, yet you pushed yourself anyway. I’m serious-keep this up and you won’t live past forty.”
Liu Ye’s words left Zhao Wuchang completely bewildered. What did that mean? Xu Fei was married? That was a minor issue. More importantly, there was something wrong with Xu Fei’s body?
“Liu Ye, explain yourself. What’s wrong with my body?” he asked hurriedly.
Liu Ye glanced downward.
Zhao Wuchang understood at once and collapsed against his seat.
So young, yet already… incapable?
This was no small matter. If Xu Fei truly could not perform, how could he produce descendants? Without descendants, Zhao Wuchang would have no blood relatives to swap souls with in the future!
Seeing Xu Fei’s expression, Liu Ye could not help offering some comfort.
“All right, don’t take it too hard. Technology is so advanced now. There has to be a cure. You need to believe in science. Enough brooding. Come on-Brother Liu will take you somewhere.”
“Where?” Zhao Wuchang could not resist asking.
“Oh, stop asking. You’ll know when we get there.”
Zhao Wuchang saw officers emerging from the station and knew he could not linger. He started the car and followed Liu Ye’s directions.
When they arrived, he stared ahead in astonishment.
Liu Ye had brought him to a construction site.
“Hey! Brother Sun!”
“Little Liu!”
