Chapter 144
Chapter 144
Alarm surged through Wang Weiwei. She glanced at Liu Ye, but he remained perfectly calm. Had he failed to notice, or was his composure simply that extraordinary?
The nurse clearly detected Wang Weiwei’s reaction. A terrifying smile spread across her face.
She looked at Liu Ye, raised a hand to smooth her hair, and deliberately exposed her wrist.
Liu Ye glanced once without changing expression.
The nurse paused. His self-control was astonishing. Or had he truly not noticed?
She waved her wrist casually before his eyes a second time. Liu Ye looked again, still unmoved.
Her face darkened. Abandoning all pretense, she asked in a low voice, “Do you see what this is?”
Wang Weiwei clapped both hands over her mouth. The rules said not to respond to anything she said.
Surely Liu Ye had noticed too.
“Of course I see it. So what?” he replied.
He rolled up his own sleeve.
“It’s just a red Dragon Boat Festival cord. Who doesn’t have one? Look at mine! My big brother paid twenty yuan for it, and it even has two little gourds. What are you showing off for?”
Liu Ye was genuinely offended. Did she think he could not afford one?
The nurse fell silent.
So did Wang Weiwei.
The nurse quietly took out her phone and scanned her own cord. The GuaiBao shopping app listed an entire bundle for two yuan.
Was it Wang Weiwei’s imagination, or did the nurse suddenly seem dejected?
The elevator soon reached their floor. Without another word, the nurse led Liu Ye to Ward 08.
An elderly woman lay on the bed. Wang Weiwei glanced curiously at the nurse’s clipboard and discovered that the patient was not elderly at all.
She was only twenty.
The woman suffered from a rapid-aging disorder. In just two decades, her body had almost reached the end of its life.
Wang Weiwei covered her mouth. It was terrifying. When the patient suddenly looked at her, she nearly screamed and hurried back to her own ward.
Her assigned patient seemed quite manageable by comparison.
After delivering Liu Ye, the nurse covered her face and left.
Liu Ye paid her no attention. He smiled at the woman in bed.
“Ma’am, my name is Liu Ye. You can call me Little Liu. If you need anything, just tell me. I’ll make sure you’re perfectly comfortable.”
“Mm.”
The woman looked him over with obvious dislike. Her current body had deteriorated beyond repair, and she wanted a replacement. Unfortunately, this newcomer was of disappointingly poor quality.
She could not afford to be picky under the circumstances.
Closing her eyes, she decided to sleep. Night would offer a better chance to deal with the brat.
“Ma’am, are you thirsty?” Liu Ye asked the instant her eyes closed.
An angry vein seemed to throb on her forehead.
“No.”
“Oh.”
She closed her eyes again. Several minutes later, just as sleep approached, Liu Ye’s voice returned.
“Ma’am, are you hungry?”
The woman became furious. She had chosen not to torment him, only for him to torment her instead.
“I am neither hungry nor thirsty. I only want to sleep. Stop disturbing me!”
“Oh.”
She shut her eyes angrily.
“Ma’am…”
“What now? Can you leave me in peace?” she roared. Her sleep was already shallow. How could anyone rest with constant interruptions?
“I only wanted to ask whether you need the toilet. It’s more comfortable to go before sleeping.”
“No!”
The woman closed her eyes, then opened them again almost immediately.
“Help me up.”
Damn the brat. Now that he had mentioned it, she really did feel the urge.
Liu Ye immediately helped her rise. This was much better. She needed to make demands and keep him busy. Otherwise, how could he display his abilities and stand out in such fierce competition?
After he escorted her to the bathroom and back, she pointed toward the television.
“If you’re bored, watch that. Just stop bothering me.”
Liu Ye pouted and moved aside. Why would she not give him a chance to prove himself?
He turned on the television, carefully lowering the volume so it would not disturb her sleep.
“Viewers, today we are honored to welcome health expert Jiang, who will explain the science of healthy living.”
Liu Ye immediately became interested. This was exactly what he needed. Brother Guiwa always said that continuous learning was the key to improvement.
His employment was already in danger. He had to acquire new knowledge quickly.
“Many details we overlook in daily life can cause tremendous damage to the body. Consider sleep. Lying down places enormous pressure on the lungs and can easily cause pulmonary disease. Next, I will explain the dangers of various sleeping positions in detail…”
Liu Ye’s mouth fell open as he watched.
So that was how it worked! No wonder the man was an expert. His explanation made perfect sense.
Liu Ye looked at the woman. She was sleeping flat on her back.
“Ma’am! Ma’am!”
She opened her eyes.
“What do you want now?”
“Listen to me. Your current condition is extremely dangerous.”
Liu Ye’s urgency genuinely frightened her. Had something suddenly gone wrong with this body?
“Wh-what is it?”
“When you sleep, do you ever feel tightness in your chest or shortness of breath? Does it sometimes feel as though you can’t breathe at all?”
That was exactly what happened. Fear crept across her face.
“What causes it?”
“The expert said you always sleep lying down, which compresses your lungs.”
“Really?”
Though she looked ancient, the woman was only in her twenties and lacked experience. She believed Liu Ye immediately.
“Fine. I’ll sleep on my side.”
She turned and tried again.
Several minutes later, Liu Ye spoke.
“Ma’am… Ma’am…”
She opened her eyes wearily. “What now?”
“The expert said you shouldn’t sleep on your left side. It puts pressure on your heart.”
“Then I’ll sleep on my right.”
“That won’t work either. The expert said lying on your right damages the liver.”
“Then I’ll sleep on my stomach!” she snapped.
“You can’t. Sleeping on your stomach damages the digestive system.”
“Then how am I supposed to sleep? You’ve ruled out all four directions! Fine, I won’t sleep at all!”
“That’s even worse. The expert said staying up late damages your kidneys.”
The woman stared at him.
“Then what do you expect me to do?”
Liu Ye’s heart leaped. Here was his opportunity! A capable caregiver proved his worth by solving exactly this sort of difficult problem.
“Don’t worry. I have a solution.”
