Chapter 96
Chapter 96
Everyone who had been bustling about instantly turned to look.
Song Jin still had that huge mouthful of popsicle in his mouth. It was cool, tangy, and sweet-genuinely delicious, but also genuinely freezing his mouth numb.
“Hah… hah…”
Ji Yan’an looked at him with a chilly gaze.
Song Jin awkwardly rubbed his nose.
“I diddn’ do id on purpozh.”
Jiang Yunsui cried as she puffed up with anger like an enraged pufferfish, her big eyes glaring hard at him.
Shen Qingzhu said, “Childish.”
From the little embroidered pouch hanging at his waist, he took out a few pieces of candy.
“Suisui, come here.”
Jiang Yunsui sniffled. As she walked over, she even turned back and glared at Song Jin through gritted teeth.
“He went too far, waaah.”
“He bit off such a huge piece.”
Jiang Yunsui held up what was left of her popsicle for Ji Yan’an and the others to see.
The little crybaby’s eyes were red as she angrily lodged her complaint.
Ji Yan’an said in a slow, unhurried voice, “It seems Mr. Song has too little to do. Why don’t you go check on the progress over at the mine?”
Song Jin’s face darkened.
Running outside in this damned weather? He’d be roasted alive. He rolled his eyes outright.
“Fine, fine. All of you can take her side and vent her anger for her.”
Jiang Yunsui gave a few pleased little humphs. Seeing him punished immediately made her happy.
Fan He shook his head and sighed. “Morals are declining by the day. Even little children get bullied now.”
Jiang Yunsui finally stopped crying and sat beside Ji Yan’an to continue licking her popsicle.
Ji Yan’an tapped her forehead with his finger, not too hard and not too light.
“Look at you. Crying over such a tiny thing.”
“This is my only popsicle.”
Ji Yan’an said, “Aren’t they making ice right now? You’ll have plenty to eat in the future.”
“That’s still in the future.”
The next day, blocks of ice were delivered.
Once the sun rose and the heat set in, having ice in the room was unbelievably comfortable.
However, it was not placed too close. Ji Yan’an’s body could not withstand cold air invading him at close range for too long.
But in weather like this, even he found the heat unbearable.
All they could do was lower the temperature in the room a little and keep it at a comfortable level. It was much better than before.
Jiang Yunsui and the three dogs, meanwhile, wished they could hug the ice chest to themselves.
At that moment, each of the three dogs had a bowl of ice set in front of them. Every so often, they would lick it once, looking utterly comfortable.
“Jiang Yunsui.”
When Ji Yan’an grew tired from handling official business, he began teaching Jiang Yunsui to draw.
Hearing him call, Jiang Yunsui quickly took a few plums that had been resting on the ice and popped one into her mouth. The moment she bit down, threads of cold slipped through her mouth and into her body.
“Coming.”
She was interested in drawing now, so she studied very seriously.
After learning for about half an hour, Ji Yan’an drank his medicine and had to get busy again.
Jiang Yunsui, meanwhile, carried a small basin of ice and ran outside.
The three dogs hurried after her.
When she arrived at the neighboring residence, she saw the three people who were busy working.
Jiang Yunsui trotted over and greeted them.
The three of them were very happy to see her too.
“Suisui, those little red fruits of yours have grown another batch.”
Jiang Yunsui answered in her soft, childish voice, “Okay. Uncle Liu, did you drink the sour plum soup yet?”
“We did, we did. Heard you came up with it. You’re really clever.”
“That’s right. We uncles all have to thank you.”
The few of them clumsily praised Jiang Yunsui. Working here not only meant they could eat their fill every day, but the household even had iced drinks sent over for them.
The Young Master was a good man, and this little child was a heaven-sent good person too.
The little one was overjoyed, her eyes curving into little crescent moons from her smile.
Heehee. Little Mushroom liked being praised too.
“Drink lots, okay? If it isn’t enough, you can ask for more.”
After saying that, she ran into the house.
Most of the flowers were being raised indoors. It was too hot outside, and some flowers could not be exposed to such harsh sunlight.
As soon as Jiang Yunsui went inside, she spotted several tomatoes that had already turned red.
Some were still flowering, while others were still small green fruits.
Strictly speaking, when Jiang Yunsui bought them, the tomato plants had already been on their final round of fruit. But during this period, she had taken meticulous care of them, moving them out into the courtyard at night to go moonbathing with her. Somehow, they had actually flowered and borne fruit again.
All she could say was that the essence of the sun and moon really was far too beneficial for plants.
The peaches in Ji Yan’an’s courtyard were growing bigger by the day too. Every day, smelling that peach fragrance, Jiang Yunsui had to stand beneath the Peach Tree and drool with longing.
But these past few days, she had noticed bugs appearing on the Peach Tree.
Those black, wriggling worms were not only ugly, they were terribly scary.
Jiang Yunsui was troubled. How was she supposed to deal with those bugs?
Oh, right. She could go find Shen Qingzhu. He loved playing with bugs.
Or she could raise a chicken. Chickens could eat bugs, and the eggs they laid were tasty too.
As all sorts of random thoughts tumbled through her mind, Jiang Yunsui had already picked the ripe red tomatoes.
There was about a small bowlful.
Last time, she had simply eaten them like fruit, popping them into her mouth one by one.
This time, she wanted tomato scrambled eggs.
Carrying the tomatoes, Jiang Yunsui trotted out again with light, lively steps.
“Uncle Liu, I’m leaving! You’ve all worked hard~”
She bounced all the way over to the kitchen and found everyone bustling about making sweet potato noodles.
She also saw a clean line strung between two trees, with strands of noodles folded over it and hung up to dry.
“Fat Chef.”
She scurried inside on her short little legs.
“Suisui’s here. Look what this is.”
“Milk tea.”
“That’s right. With ice in it too.”
Jiang Yunsui set the tomatoes down and began drinking iced milk tea.
Having ice in summer was truly wonderful.
“And this too.”
Fat Chef led her over to look at a basin of popsicles frozen in ice.
To make the shape look nice, he had even specially asked someone to make rectangular wooden molds.
The molds could be taken apart, and a layer of oiled paper had been laid at the very bottom so the popsicles would be easy to remove later.
“Wow…”
“Hahaha… I heard you cried over this yesterday. Now there’s plenty to go around.”
Jiang Yunsui’s little face flushed, partly from embarrassment and partly from indignation. It was all Song Jin’s fault!
Jiang Yunsui huffed twice inwardly.
“Fat Chef, I brought tomatoes.”
The tomatoes were a vivid red, and they were something no one had ever eaten before.
Out in the wild, unless people already knew something was edible, no one dared try unfamiliar plants. Everyone basically believed that the brighter the color, the more poisonous it was.
But these things were round, bright red, and quite festive-looking, so nowadays people mostly kept them as ornamental plants. No one dared eat them at all.
“This… this can be eaten?”
Fat Chef frowned at the little red fruits.
“Of course. I ate them last time.”
Fat Chef immediately lowered his head to look at her.
Jiang Yunsui also tilted her little head up to look at him.
“You…”
He pressed his broad palm onto the little girl’s head.
“You little girl really are bold. You’ll eat anything. Aren’t you afraid something might happen?”
Jiang Yunsui looked innocent. “But I only ate it because I knew it was edible.”
Fine. As long as it was edible.
“Next time, you can’t be so reckless. At the very least, catch a rabbit or a chicken and test it first.”
Jiang Yunsui nodded obediently.
Fat Chef picked one up too and stuffed it into his mouth.
As soon as he bit into it, juice burst out. It was more sour than anything, but not especially sour, and there was a faint sweetness to it as well.
“Not bad.”
“I want tomato scrambled eggs.”
Jiang Yunsui announced what she wanted to eat in her soft, sticky little voice.
Hearing this, Fat Chef did not object. Although he had never made it before, he ran through the process briefly in his head, then got to work.
“Go sit off to the side. Once I’ve cooked it, you can eat.”
