Chapter 68
Chapter 68
Unfortunately, there was only one dilapidated house on this side.
There were quite a lot of them. Ji Yan’an could sleep in the carriage, and in this weather, the others could make do by sleeping out under the open sky.
The only concern was rain.
After they briefly settled in, it was time to cook.
Jiang Yunsui held a flatbread in her hand and squatted in front of the big communal pot.
It smelled kind of delicious.
“Uncle, this smells so good. When will it be ready?”
The uncle stirring the pot with a spatula burst out laughing. “Of course it does. I’m quite the expert when it comes to cooking for a crowd.”
“I was the head cook in the Cook Battalion. What those little soldier boys loved eating most was my big-pot rice.”
“Wow… That’s amazing.”
Jiang Yunsui praised him in her soft, milky voice. Her little mouth was sweet as honey, and it delighted the uncle to no end.
As soon as the food was ready, he served her the first bowl.
There were vegetables and meat inside. Though there wasn’t much meat, it truly smelled wonderful.
Mm, and it tasted good too.
It was different from what she usually ate with Ji Yan’an. A different kind of flavor.
Jiang Yunsui ate happily, then carried her bowl off to find Ji Yan’an.
Given the limited conditions, Ji Yan’an, Song Jin, and the others had set up a table beside the carriage. The dishes on the table were nowhere near as lavish as those back at the estate, but they were still quite good.
Jiang Yunsui sidled over and shamelessly mooched a few bites.
“Ji Yan’an, I’m full. I’m going out for a walk by myself, okay? Don’t worry about me.”
Her eyes sparkled as she looked toward the mountains in the distance.
This area was mostly plains, and as far as the eye could see, most of the terrain was grassland. But that didn’t mean there were no mountains or forests.
Nanshan Village was in the mountains.
She missed the forest so much. She wanted to go out and wander around.
Ji Yan’an frowned slightly. “There are wild beasts in the mountains here, like bears.”
Jiang Yunsui nodded. “I know. But they won’t be able to find me.”
Hearing that, Ji Yan’an nodded. “Be careful. Come back early.”
Jiang Yunsui nodded. “I know~”
After eating and drinking her fill, Jiang Yunsui patted her belly, immediately informed Ji Yan’an, and then ran off.
Great forest, here I come~
Because she was too happy, she bounced a little too high. She hadn’t even hopped more than two steps before she stepped on a rock, and her cheerfully bouncing little body abruptly plunged downward.
“Ow!”
Ji Yan’an: It was as if he had heard the rock scream.
Looking at the child already sprawled on the ground, Ji Yan’an’s mouth twitched.
Everyone else: “…”
Jiang Yunsui climbed up from the ground. Her little mouth puckered, her eyes grew wet, and she immediately started wailing.
Song Jin truly couldn’t hold it in and laughed out loud.
Only after Ji Yan’an glanced at him did he barely manage to suppress it.
Shen Qingzhu coughed twice, walked over, and examined her. “It’s nothing serious. You didn’t twist your ankle.”
Jiang Yunsui clutched her waist. “Waaah, my waist hurts again.”
Holding back laughter, Shen Qingzhu said, “That little waist of yours isn’t very big, but it sure suffers a lot.”
Jiang Yunsui cried even harder.
This body was genuinely useless!
Fine. She could forget about going out today.
Listless and limp, Jiang Yunsui lay on the small couch inside the carriage, sighing over and over.
Then she took a bite of a plum.
Although the environment here wasn’t great, because of the large temperature difference between day and night, most of the fruit that could grow here was quite sweet.
For example, the plum Jiang Yunsui was eating now had purple skin and was fairly large. One bite was both crisp and sweet.
Delicious, delicious.
Ji Yan’an entered the carriage and glanced at her.
“Even when you’re injured, you don’t forget to eat.”
Jiang Yunsui’s soft voice carried a touch of righteous confidence.
“Since I’m already injured, I definitely can’t let my mouth suffer too.”
Shen Qingzhu’s medical skills were indeed quite good. By the next day, Jiang Yunsui could barely feel any pain in her disaster-prone little chubby waist anymore.
She opened her eyes with a sleepy whine. Though her eyes had cracked open, her brain was nowhere near awake yet. Thinking she was still at home, she started grumbling and rolling around.
Bang…
Outside the carriage, Ji Yan’an paused for a moment, then calmly took another sip of tea.
“Everything has been arranged. Tell Ji Yi and the others to provide support from the shadows. Remember, only investigate. Don’t alert the enemy.”
“Yes, sir!”
Shen Qingzhu glanced toward the carriage.
“Young Master, aren’t you going to check on her?”
Ji Yan’an said, “No need. She probably rolled into the carriage wall.”
Clearly, he knew all too well what kind of demonic sleeping habits Jiang Yunsui had.
Ji Yan’an began coughing. Conditions out here in the wilderness were poor; after sitting in the carriage for so long yesterday and not sleeping well last night, he looked rather worn down today.
Even so, he had gotten up early to assign tasks.
Nanshu came over carrying a bowl of medicine that smelled awful from several steps away. He looked at Ji Yan’an with distress.
“Young Master, why don’t you rest a little longer?”
Ji Yan’an shook his head.
“I’m fine.”
He took the decoction and drank it down without a change in expression. Nanshu quickly handed him a piece of candied fruit.
Then he brought out a cloak.
“Our luck really is terrible. It only rained a little last night, but the weather is still so chilly now. Young Master, your body runs cold. Please keep this cloak wrapped around you.”
Ji Yan’an said, “Nanshu, go with Fan He and speak to the village chief again. Have the village clear out a few rooms for us to stay in temporarily.”
Nanshu promised, “Don’t worry, Young Master. I guarantee I’ll complete the task.”
As they were speaking, Jiang Yunsui crawled out of the carriage, clutching her aching head and nose, her face twisted in pain.
Her little nose and eyes were both red, proof that she had just cried.
From the pain-and from the involuntary tears that came after bumping her nose.
The instant she hit it, the sting had made her tears fall on the spot.
“Ji Yan’an, look for me. Am I having a nosebleed?”
She trudged over to Ji Yan’an with a mournful little face.
“No.”
“Oh.”
Then that was fine.
She sat down beside Ji Yan’an and let out a tiny sigh.
“Ugh, that couch is too small. I rolled less than two times before I crashed into the wall.”
Ji Yan’an glanced at her. “Who can you blame when you can’t even sleep properly?”
It was bad enough that she tossed and turned in her sleep, but after waking up, she even did that whole series of strange little things.
Rolling around, lying on the bed and stretching, and kicking randomly.
“I obviously sleep very properly.”
Jiang Yunsui, who had no idea what she looked like when she slept, immediately argued back.
Ji Yan’an: “…”
If Jiang Yunsui wasn’t the only reason he could fall asleep, he would rather sleep on the floor than share a bed with this child!
“Ji Yan’an, help me tie up my hair. I can’t reach it.”
Nanny Zhou wasn’t here, and apart from Jiang Yunsui, everyone who had come along this time was male. There really was no one to do her hair.
Ji Yan’an: “…” The sheer audacity!
His gaze turned dangerous as he stared at the fluffy, messy little head that had leaned in front of him.
Jiang Yunsui: What was going on? Why did her neck suddenly feel cold?
The next second, she felt the back of her neck being pinched.
Jiang Yunsui instantly went still like a kitten held by the scruff, danger alarms blaring in her head.
She tucked in her neck and fell quiet.
“You want me to comb your hair?”
Ji Yan’an said slowly, “Would you like me to comb your head right off while I’m at it?”
Jiang Yunsui’s little face filled with terror, and she timidly shook her head.
“I was wrong.”
Obediently-and very quickly-she admitted her mistake.
Only then did Ji Yan’an finally show mercy and release her neck.
Staring at Jiang Yunsui’s hair, he suddenly smiled.
“Fine. I’ll comb your hair. However…”
