Chapter 29

The reason Cook Chen had bought the rabbit was that she wanted to use its fur to make a small scarf for Jiang Yunsui.

Clearly, the fur of the other rabbits wasn’t nearly as beautiful as this white one.

At the moment, Jiang Yunsui wasn’t paying much attention to Cook Chen. Instead, she and Heiwa were focused on the puppies belonging to the neighboring stall owner.

“What kind of doggies are these?”

Jiang Yunsui looked at the puppies. They seemed to be only a little over a month old, chubby and round, with soft, milky barks.

She loved them.

There were two in total-one white and one brown.

“These are two pups from my own dog. My family can’t afford to keep them anymore. Little girl, if you want them, I’ll sell them to you cheap-one tael of silver for the pair.”

Although Cook Chen was busy with her own business, she overheard the stall owner’s words.

She immediately chimed in, “One tael for these dogs?!”

“Don’t think you can bully her just because she’s a child. I’m still right here.”

“Oh, I’m really not overcharging! Look at these two pups yourself, ma’am. They’re barely a month old and they’re already this big. Have you ever seen dogs this size?”

“This is a special breed from our region. They’re fierce-a single dog can fight off several wolves. They’re experts at guarding the house. Even back home, they’re rare.”

“I’ll be honest with you; their only flaw is that they eat too much. My family truly can’t afford to raise them, otherwise I wouldn’t be selling them.”

Cook Chen squatted down and picked up one of the pups to examine it. It let out a vigorous, energetic howl.

The puppy’s skeletal frame was indeed very large.

Jiang Yunsui tugged on Cook Chen’s sleeve, looking at her with pleading eyes.

She really liked them.

Cook Chen sighed, turned back to the owner, and began to haggle.

After a heated war of words, the stall owner dropped the price by a hundred wen. In the end, the two dogs were purchased for nine hundred wen.

Only after paying did Cook Chen realize something. “Oh no… now that we’ve bought the dogs, where are we going to keep them?”

She had truly lost her head, swayed by the little girl’s pitiful gaze.

They were still living in the General’s Mansion!

Jiang Yunsui held the two yapping puppies, nearly dropping them.

The two little fellows were quite heavy.

“Can we not keep them?”

Cook Chen looked regretful. “There’s no way we can hide two dogs like this. Once they grow up, they’ll be somewhat dangerous. How can we, as servants, keep pets?”

Jiang Yunsui looked at the two puppies in her arms, then looked at Heiwa.

“Then… then we can say they are Heiwa’s babies.”

After saying this, she nodded with certainty. She really was a clever little thing.

Cook Chen: “…”

Heiwa was a male dog. Where on earth would two puppies this big suddenly come from?

Jiang Yunsui suggested, “We can go ask the Young Master first.”

Cook Chen comforted herself as well. “It’s fine, it’s fine. The Ji Family also breeds hunting dogs. At worst, we can just send them to the Ji Family’s kennels.”

They had spent quite a bit of silver on this trip.

They couldn’t browse anymore.

Cook Chen decided to take Jiang Yunsui back.

If they kept wandering, her purse would be completely emptied.

Time to head back!

Jiang Yunsui got tired of carrying the dogs; her small arms were aching.

So, she set the two of them down.

The two puppies were already familiar with Jiang Yunsui’s scent. They wagged their tiny tails and trotted along right at her heels.

Furry and chubby, they were incredibly cute.

What she loved most were animals when they were young.

Back when she was a mushroom, she had snuggled with little foxes. Sometimes she would nestle right in the middle of several fox cubs, and the mother fox never chased her away.

She had even pressed herself against tiger cubs. When the mother tiger licked her cubs’ fur, she had even given her a lick too.
If she hadn’t already attained human form and possessed a sturdy mushroom cap, that cap would have been licked clean off by the big tiger’s barbed tongue.

Servants typically entered and exited through the manor’s back gate. The gate was always watched by guards, but while security used to be relatively relaxed, things had tightened up significantly since Young Master Ji arrived.

At the moment, a guard was frowning at the two chubby puppies by Jiang Yunsui’s feet. Other items weren’t an issue, but these two dogs were a different story.

Terrified the puppies wouldn’t be allowed in, Jiang Yunsui pointed at Heiwa. “They’re Heiwa’s babies.”

The Little Mushroom wasn’t very good at lying; her eyes darted around guiltily, her conscience clearly pricking her.

Heiwa: “…”

The two guards looked at Heiwa. This was the Young Master’s dog.

In the end, Jiang Yunsui managed to carry the two plump puppies inside. The guards’ hands were now a little heavier, each holding a small handful of mulberries.

One of them coughed. “You stay here and watch. I’ll go inform the Young Master.”

Once they reached the small courtyard, Jiang Yunsui snacked on mulberries while leading the two puppies around to mark their territory.

“You have to remember this spot. No peeing here, okay?” she said, pointing under the pomegranate tree.

Even though animal waste and urine provided nutrients for plants, the Little Mushroom refused! She could grow just fine by absorbing moonlight.

“Woof! Woof!”

After taking the two puppies and Heiwa for a lap around the yard, she went to find Cook Chen. Her mouth was stained completely black from the berries. The two puppies’ muzzles were also tinged with dark purple. Heiwa was already black, so it didn’t show on him.

“Auntie, Auntie! I’m going to see the Young Master and Uncle Li!”

Cook Chen finished putting away the groceries she had bought. “Wait, I’m coming with you.”

She couldn’t let Suisui go alone. When she saw the girl’s mouth, her own lips twitched. “Come here and wipe your mouth first.”

After cleaning her mouth and face, Jiang Yunsui led the three dogs and followed Cook Chen toward the Front Courtyard. They entered without any trouble, but she hesitated outside the Young Master’s room, not daring to go in.

Uncle Li’s eyes lit up when he saw Jiang Yunsui, and he immediately went inside to announce her arrival. “Young Master, that little girl Jiang Yunsui is here.”

Ji Yan’an gave a reserved nod. He had originally intended to give the silly girl the cold shoulder for a while. However, Heiwa started making a fuss at the door first.

“Woof! Woof! Woof!”

Following Heiwa’s lead, the two puppies also began to yelp in their high-pitched, milky voices.

Jiang Yunsui squatted down and used her hands to pinch the puppies’ muzzles shut. “Shhh, shhh! Be quiet, or you’ll be turned into dog meat!”

Ji Yan’an barked from inside, “Get in here!”

What audacity, daring to slander him like that!

Heiwa was the first to trot inside, tail wagging. Seeing that Jiang Yunsui wasn’t moving, he turned back and tugged at her clothes with his teeth.

Jiang Yunsui hurriedly tried to push him away with her small hands. “Don’t bite! I’m coming, I’m coming! Don’t ruin my clothes!”

She stepped over the high threshold, but the two puppies struggled for a long time without being able to climb over. Their legs were too short and their bodies too round; they could only scrabble at the wood with their paws, yapping urgently at Jiang Yunsui.

Jiang Yunsui ran back to help them. Cook Chen lent a hand as well, then followed them inside with a nervous expression.

Ji Yan’an glanced at her. “Cook Chen, you may leave first.”

His voice was relatively mild. Nanny Zhou led her out, and seeing the worry on her face, she whispered, “Don’t worry. The Young Master is in a fairly good mood.”

Despite hearing this, Cook Chen still felt a bit uneasy.

Inside the room, Heiwa had already walked over to Jiang Yunsui’s side and sat down. Jiang Yunsui approached the Young Master with the two little puppies in tow.

“Greetings, Young Master.”

“Woof! Woof!”

The two puppies wagged their tails, circling around her feet.

Uncle Li caught sight of the two dogs and let out a soft exclamation. “Oh, my. You don’t see dogs like these very often.”
