Chapter 40
Chapter 40
Early the next morning, news spread that Shen Qingzhu had died after being bitten by a venomous snake.
In addition to Shen Qingzhu, several others from the Ji Family had perished in the assassination attempt the previous night.
Young Master Ji’s poison had flared up, causing him to cough up blood and fall into a coma.
Meanwhile, the supposedly comatose Ji Yan’an was lying in bed, with Jiang Yunsui slumped beside him.
He had indeed fallen unconscious; after finalizing the plan to fake Shen Qingzhu’s death last night, his vision had gone dark and he’d passed out. However, even in his stupor, he was clearly restless. He woke up after only four hours.
Upon waking, he had fallen ill, his complexion looking even worse than before. Yet his first priority was to send someone to check if Jiang Yunsui was awake.
The answer was no.
If no one called for her, she could sleep until the sun was high in the sky. After she had spent about ten minutes idling in bed, Ji Si picked Jiang Yunsui up like a little chick and carried her to the room next door.
There, she immediately saw Ji Yan’an, who looked as if he were on his last breath, surrounded by a room full of people with solemn expressions.
“Waaaaah…”
Her sudden outburst of crying left everyone stunned.
Even Ji Yan’an was a bit dazed, letting out a few coughs. He glanced at Jiang Yunsui’s bandaged left hand, wondering if she was crying because her hand hurt. A flash of guilt crossed his eyes.
“Come here.”
Jiang Yunsui trotted over and threw herself onto his bed.
“Waaaaah… Don’t die! If you die, what… what will happen to me?”
The Little Mushroom was crying her heart out.
Ji Yan’an: ???
Ji Yan’an: …
The others: …
Ji Yan’an’s face darkened slightly, his voice sounding as if it were being squeezed through his teeth.
“I admit I was wrong to accidentally cut you last night, but there’s no need to curse me to death!”
Jiang Yunsui’s eyelashes were still wet with tears. Hearing this, she looked at him blankly.
“Huh? You’re not dying?”
Ji Yan’an took a deep breath.
“I’m just sick.”
How did he look like he was about to die?!
Nanshu and the others were gossiping in their heads. Although it was a bit treasonous, the Young Master really did look… Hiss… what were they thinking? The Young Master would surely live a long life!
“But, but you look like…”
“Shut up.”
“Oh.”
Ji Yan’an coughed a few times as a young man with an ordinary face, dressed as a servant, walked in. He handed a bowl of medicinal soup to Ji Yan’an.
“Young Master, it’s time for your medicine.”
Ji Yan’an nodded and took the medicine. He noticed the child, who had been crying hysterically just a moment ago, covering her nose and shuffling her short legs away from him.
Ji Yan’an drank the medicine without changing his expression. Then, pointing at Jiang Yunsui, he said, “This little maid was also injured yesterday. Doctor Shen, take a look at her. If she needs medicine, don’t hesitate to prescribe it; the Ji Mansion will pay.”
Jiang Yunsui’s eyes widened in disbelief.
How wicked!
She quickly hid her hand behind her back, her large eyes staring at the man in front of her.
“Are you Doctor Shen? Why do you look different?”
“Wow, can you change your face?”
A smile familiar to Jiang Yunsui appeared on Shen Qingzhu’s lips. Although the face was different, his current aura was exactly the same as before.
“I’m wearing a human skin mask.”
Ji Yan’an instructed her, “Remember, there is no Doctor Shen in this mansion anymore. His surname is Rong, and he is a new servant.”
Although Jiang Yunsui didn’t understand what they were up to, she was obedient and nodded dutifully.
“Let me see the wound on the back of your hand. If it’s just an external injury, you won’t need to drink herbal medicine.”
Hearing his words, Jiang Yunsui hesitantly extended her injured hand.
After the gauze was unwrapped, a look of surprise flashed in Ji Yan’an’s eyes. Although it had been dark last night, he had personally treated Jiang Yunsui’s wound, so he naturally knew its size.
By now, the wound had not only completely stopped bleeding, but it had even begun to heal.
Shen Qingzhu stared at the cut on the back of her hand for a moment, then pressed his fingers against her pulse.
“She’s fine. There’s no need for medicine, but the dressing needs to be changed.”
Without another word, he applied fresh ointment to Jiang Yunsui’s wound and re-bandaged it.
Ji Yan’an coughed a few times. “All of you may leave now.”
Jiang Yunsui started to hop and skip away with the others.
“Jiang Yunsui, stay. Come here.”
Jiang Yunsui: “…”
What, she was the only one who had to work overtime?!
“One gold nugget.”
Jiang Yunsui immediately beamed, running cheerfully to his side.
“What can I do for you, Young Master?”
Her little milky voice was incredibly sweet.
*Heh, she really is a little money-grubber.*
He lay down and held out a hand to her.
“Sleep.”
Oh, just that? She was an expert at this.
As long as he didn’t make her practice her writing.
She trotted over to the bedside and grasped his hand with her two chubby little hands.
It didn’t take long before Ji Yan’an’s consciousness began to blur.
He wondered what the logic behind it was, but this little girl truly was a human sedative.
Jiang Yunsui waited until he had been asleep for a while before letting out a yawn herself.
She peeked around stealthily. No one was there!
Hehehe…
The Little Mushroom grew a bit bolder, quietly leaning half of her small body against the bed.
*Wow, the Young Master’s bed is even softer than mine.*
Ji Yan’an woke up at noon.
The moment his senses returned, the first thing he felt was that his arm was numb.
He could barely even feel the existence of his left arm.
He opened his eyes and turned his head.
He was met with the sight of the little girl pressing down on his arm, sleeping soundly. She even had one little foot resting on his stomach.
And her hand was sprawled across his face.
Ji Yan’an: “…”
Just how long had he been asleep?
Moving her hand and short legs off him, Ji Yan’an frowned as he pulled out his numb arm.
He stared at the little girl, who was still deep in her dreams.
He was almost tempted to laugh from sheer exasperation. This little maidservant really knew how to turn the world upside down!
Ji Yan’an realized he didn’t even seem to have a temper about it anymore.
“Wake up.”
He gave Jiang Yunsui a nudge.
To his surprise, the little girl just rolled over and kept sleeping.
“Time to eat.”
He uttered those three words with a calm expression.
Jiang Yunsui dizzily lifted her head a fraction.
“Huh? Food?”
She mumbled incoherently before her head flopped back down.
Well, she didn’t smell anything delicious.
Ji Yan’an stared at her for a long time.
He kept chanting to himself: *She’s medicine, she’s medicine…*
In the end, he didn’t force her awake like he usually would have. He dressed himself, got out of bed, and left the room.
Uncle Li, Nanshu, and the others had taken brief rests before returning to their posts.
Seeing Ji Yan’an awake and looking much better than before, they all breathed a heavy sigh of relief.
“Did you sleep well, Master? Shall I prepare lunch?”
Ji Yan’an gave a hum of affirmation. “Get it ready. *Cough, cough…*”
Nanny Zhou immediately went down to prepare the meal, while Nanshu brought a cloak to drape over his shoulders.
“What is the situation outside?”
Nanmo reported in a businesslike manner. “The assassins’ bodies have been cremated, and the corpse of ‘Doctor Shen’ has been buried. Rumors about the assassination attempt on the manor last night and your unconscious state are spreading like wildfire. Several groups of people have already appeared around the General’s Mansion to scout for information.”
“Also, Old General Tang sat here for an hour before leaving.”
Ji Yan’an nodded. “Keep an eye on Commander Wang’s movements.”
