Chapter 38
Chapter 38
Jiang Yunsui had originally intended to go see the room Nanny Zhou had prepared for her the moment she returned.
But then she suddenly remembered that Ji Yan’an hadn’t given her the silver melon seeds yet.
So, she took a detour and went to find Ji Yan’an, carrying her small bundle on her back.
Nanmo, who was standing at the door, didn’t stop her.
“Young Master, where are my silver melon seeds?”
The Little Mushroom didn’t understand the concept of being subtle. She trotted over to his side with happy, quick little steps.
Ji Yan’an was currently lying on a rocking chair, covered with a black cloak.
It was still a bit cold here at night, especially for someone like him who was poisoned and naturally sensitive to the cold.
He held a book in his hand, flipping through it slowly, while Nanshu stood behind him, carefully drying his long, jet-black hair.
He didn’t even sit up, merely hooking a finger at Nanshu. “Give her two silver melon seeds.”
Nanshu went to fetch a purse and poured out two beautiful silver melon seeds, handing them to Jiang Yunsui.
“Here. These things are small, so make sure you hold onto them tight.”
The silver melon seed was truly about the size of a real melon seed-shiny, silver, and plump. It looked quite adorable.
But despite its small size, it was solid metal.
One of these weighed about half a tael.
“I’m going back now, then. Bye-bye~”
Actually, there was one benefit to living here: she could wake up a bit later tomorrow.
After carefully tucking the two silver melon seeds into the little embroidered pouch Aunt Chen had made for her, Jiang Yunsui followed Nanny Zhou to her room.
It was indeed much prettier than the one at Aunt Chen’s place. The room was significantly larger, the bed was much bigger, and even the bedding was made of beautiful, comfortable fabric.
Jiang Yunsui was so happy that even the strands of her hair seemed to flutter with joy.
She really had managed to latch onto a powerful thigh!
Accompanied by the two puppies, she did a lap around the room as if marking her territory, then flopped onto the bed and rolled around.
The two puppies wanted to follow her up.
That wouldn’t do.
What if they pooped on the bed?
Jiang Yunsui scrambled off the bed and crouched down to reason with the two little ones.
“You have to stay with Heiwa, okay? This bed is mine. You can’t come up. Your paws are dirty, and you’re always losing control of your bladder and bowels. No getting on the bed.”
After carefully putting away her bundle and her little embroidered pouch, Jiang Yunsui grabbed the two puppies by their tails and led them out of the room.
“Heiwa, Heiwa! Come quickly and look after them.”
Heiwa arrived promptly and gave the two puppies a very stern warning.
Watching the two puppies droop their ears, so thoroughly lectured that they stopped wagging their tails, the Little Mushroom stood with her hands on her hips. She had a dog to back her up!
Time for moonbathing, moonbathing.
Jiang Yunsui only watched for a moment before she had to perform her daily moonbathing session.
This wasn’t Aunt Chen’s courtyard anymore.
There were no pomegranate trees, but there were peach trees.
There were three peach trees and one apple tree.
These fruit trees had already started to bear fruit, though they were still tiny.
They weren’t even as big as an egg yet.
Jiang Yunsui circled the fruit trees once and finally selected the peach tree closest to her.
Yes, she felt a bit more secure moonbathing under a tree.
Besides, any energy she couldn’t fully absorb or that leaked from her body could be fed to the peach tree. That way, when the peaches were ripe and ready to eat, they would be large and delicious.
It was killing two birds with one stone.
Having chosen her spot, Jiang Yunsui began to crouch down.
She minimized her presence. With the two puppies being looked after by Heiwa, for a moment, no one noticed a person crouching under the tree.
While Jiang Yunsui was earnestly moonbathing, Heiwa, who had been lazily watching the two puppies, suddenly pricked up his ears in alert.
A second later, it stood up and barked loudly in a certain direction.
Jiang Yunsui opened her eyes, startled.
What was going on?
“Assassins!”
As a sharp, wary cry rang out, several figures dressed in black night-suits suddenly emerged.
All the hidden guards stationed in the courtyard revealed themselves and began fighting the assassins. The guards of the General’s Mansion moved into action immediately as well.
Jiang Yunsui crouched under the tree, her eyes wide as she stared back at an assassin who had been killed right in front of her, his eyes still wide open in death.
Jiang Yunsui: “…”
The Little Mushroom trembled violently.
It wasn’t that she was afraid of dead bodies, but this scene was terrifying. The cowardly Little Mushroom hugged herself silently, trying her best to minimize her presence.
Several assassins ran past her without even noticing she was there.
Jiang Yunsui noticed something moving on the dead assassin’s body. Despite her fear, the Little Mushroom couldn’t help but feel a spark of curiosity.

Then, she saw three snakes slither out from the assassin’s clothes. Their triangular heads and colorful, patterned bodies made her blood run cold… those snakes were clearly venomous!
“Woof! Woof! Woof!”
Hearing the barks of the two puppies, Jiang Yunsui could no longer stay hidden. Her face was deathly pale, and her legs shook as she ran toward the puppies.
Fortunately, no one noticed her.
She scooped up the two puppies and bolted toward Ji Yan’an’s room next door. An arrow whistled past her face; sensing the danger, her body instinctively leaned backward.
The arrow truly grazed the tip of her nose as it flew by.
Jiang Yunsui landed hard on her bottom, her small face filled with terror and shock.
“Waaaah…”
She couldn’t help but sob quietly. But even as she cried in fear, she had to keep moving with the two puppies. Her legs were too weak to run, so she scrambled on all fours.
In the end, she practically crawled into Ji Yan’an’s room. Once inside, she turned and rolled clumsily across the floor, still clutching the two puppies.
*Thwip! Thwip!*
It was a good thing she had rolled inside with the puppies just in time; three arrows thudded into the exact spot where she had been a moment ago.
Jiang Yunsui: QAQ
That was too close. This mushroom almost lost her life.
“Quick, close the door!”
Jiang Yunsui’s voice shook as she shouted, “Snakes! There are venomous snakes! They… on them… venomous snakes!”
She spoke between sobs, a bubble even popping from her nose as her voice trembled violently. Though the sight was rather comical, no one was in the mood to laugh at her right now.
Ji Yan’an heard her words and immediately began barking orders.
“Nanmo, take a team to spread realgar powder. Go to Doctor Shen and ask for snake repellent and antivenom!”
“Yes, sir!”
Nanmo opened the door, killing an assassin who had just leaped toward the entrance in one fluid motion. Almost instantly, several venomous snakes slithered out from the assassin’s body.
The snakes scattered rapidly. Even with Nanmo’s speed, he was only able to cut down two of them. Another one managed to slip into the room.
Ji Yan’an said, “Nanmo, go do your task. Nanshu, take the rest of the men and find that snake!”
“Yes, sir!”
Despite his worry, Nanmo obeyed the command. It was night, and the only light came from candles. The candlelight couldn’t reach every corner, and since the venomous snake was small and agile, it was truly difficult to find while hidden in the room.
Ji Yan’an gripped the dagger in his hand. At this moment, he was as calm as a grown man; from the beginning of the assassination attempt until now, he hadn’t shown a single trace of panic.
