Chapter 123
Chapter 123
Because they were in a hurry, Jiang Yunsui barely got to have any fun along the way.
Unexpectedly, halfway there, they ran into Old General Tang on his way back.
The three dogs were delighted to see Old General Tang. They circled around him, barking excitedly.
“What are you all…”
Jiang Yunsui poked her fluffy little head out of the window with a whoosh.
“Grandpa Tang, I’m here too.”
“You’re going to Qiusha?”
“Mm-hmm! I’m going to find Ji Yan’an. He’s sick.”
Thinking of Ji Yan’an’s current condition, Old General Tang could only sigh.
“I have to hurry back and root out the traitor. Fortunately, thanks to the information you gave me last time, the grain being sent to Qiusha was saved.”
Back then, the moment he suspected something might happen to the military rations, he had immediately led men in pursuit. When they arrived, they happened to see a force of Barbarians slaughtering the grain escorts and seizing the supplies.
They had made it in time and killed that group of Barbarians instead.
Tang Qingsong said, “The road ahead won’t be peaceful. I’ll assign some men to you.”
“Okay. Thank you, Grandpa Tang.”
Tang Qingsong nodded. He had to rush back.
After bidding each other farewell, both sides continued on their way.
Unexpectedly, the next day, as they passed by a village, they encountered a group of Barbarians.
The villagers were fleeing in every direction.
Those Barbarians seemed to treat killing as a game, riding on horseback and laughing loudly as they chased the villagers down.
Everywhere she looked was a scene like hell on earth. Jiang Yunsui clenched her small fists, anger written all over her little face.
It was not that she had never seen death before, but the sight of people treating lives like toys and slaughtering them for sport filled her with discomfort and disgust.
“How truly… revolting.”
The gentle smile was gone from Shen Qingzhu’s face. His gaze was icy as he looked at those Barbarians.
The Barbarians over there noticed them too. As if they had spotted fresh prey, they laughed even more wildly.
“Look at that. Some nobles have come. I wonder if they’ll run and crawl all over the place once they’re scared.”
“Kill them. Take the women and children back as two-legged sheep.”
They spoke in the Barbarians’ language, their eyes gleaming with bloodthirsty red light.
Shen Qingzhu said, “Kill them.”
Fat Chef slapped his cleaver. “Damn these beasts who are worse than animals. I haven’t stretched my bones in ages. Today, I’ll let my cleaver taste blood.”
“Hahaha, same goes for my pig-butchering knife. Today, I’ll slaughter these Barbarians like wild boars.”
Fat Chef and the others claimed they were old, but in truth, they were only in their forties.
It was just that in this era, people in their forties were basically already grandfathers.
So there was nothing wrong with Jiang Yunsui calling them grandpa.
Several of them charged out on horseback first. The guards behind them hated the Barbarians to the bone as well, so naturally, they rushed out too.
The sound of a flute rang out. Jiang Yunsui turned her head and saw Shen Qingzhu playing a white flute.
A rustling noise followed. A certain jar inside the carriage had been opened, and what crawled out of it made Jiang Yunsui’s scalp go numb.
Bugs. So many bugs.
And every one of them was brightly colored.
There were centipedes, scorpions, spiders, and snakes…
Some even flew. Under Shen Qingzhu’s control, they all headed toward the Barbarians, avoiding both the ordinary villagers and their own people.
The Barbarians had probably never suffered at the mandibles of poisonous insects before. When some of them saw the bugs flying over, they did not take them seriously at all.
“Where did these little bugs come from?”
He reached out and swatted at them directly.
The next second, a searing pain spread from his palm and pierced straight through his brain.
“Aaaah!”
“What are you doing?”
His companion thought he had gone mad, but when he followed the man’s arm with his eyes, his own eyes widened in instant terror.
His entire arm had turned red, and the skin on the surface was beginning to rot.
Suddenly, a tiny insect landed on his face.
The man stared at the bug. It looked like a bee, but its colors were shockingly bright, and fear gradually filled his eyes.
The little insect stung him on the face, and a burning sensation spread from the spot across his skin.
Another heart-rending scream rang out.
The Barbarians’ army fell into chaos because of the abnormal situation.
Most importantly, their horses had been poisoned too. Some of them collapsed straight to the ground.
The men who fell hadn’t even had time to get back up before a blade slashed across their necks.
The Barbarians’ leader reined in his horse and shouted, “Everyone, calm down! Dodge those bugs!”
“Damn it, what are those things?!”
Fat Chef shouted, “Have a taste of your grandpa’s cleaver!”
They had already charged over.
While the Barbarians were distracted and thrown into confusion by the poisonous insects, Fat Chef and the others cut them down in a frenzy.
The Barbarians’ side had to deal with Fat Chef’s group while also watching out for those little bugs. It was absolute chaos.
“Go! Retreat!”
Seeing more and more of his people die, the Barbarians’ leader decisively ordered a retreat.
“Trying to run?”
“Woof, woof!”
Heiwa leaped hard and landed right on the Barbarians’ leader’s back.
The Barbarians’ leader tried to throw the dog off his back, drawing his blade to slash behind him.
Zuozuo sprang up and bit down on his right hand.
“Ahhh!”
The Barbarians’ leader was dragged off his horse by the two dogs. Before he could get up after hitting the ground, all three dogs pounced on him and mauled him savagely.
His wrist was bitten clean off.
Their bite force was almost no different from that of wild beasts.
“Well done!”
With their leader dead, the remaining Barbarians were nothing but scattered sand.
Fat Chef and the others didn’t take long to finish them off.
The villagers who finally came back to their senses from the terror knelt on the ground and kept kowtowing.
Some sat on the ground, crying until they broke down.
Many people in their village had already died.
Jiang Yunsui couldn’t bear to watch.
Shen Qingzhu summoned all the poisonous insects back, then handed Jiang Yunsui some medicine.
“This powder stops bleeding. Go help them.”
“Okay.”
After answering, Jiang Yunsui took the medicine and jumped down from the carriage.
Some people’s wounds were so large that their organs and bones were visible.
In cases like that, hemostatic powder alone was useless.
Jiang Yunsui stayed beside Shen Qingzhu and saw him use silver needles to stop the bleeding, but doing it this way was much slower.
Jiang Yunsui asked in confusion, “Aren’t you going to stitch the wounds shut?”
Shen Qingzhu paused and looked at her.
“How would I stitch them?”
Jiang Yunsui gestured. “With a needle and thread. That way the wound comes together and won’t bleed so much.”
Shen Qingzhu thought for a moment. “We can try.”
No one had ever done this before.
There were needles and thread in the carriage, but they were all used for mending clothes.
At a time like this, they couldn’t afford to be picky.
Jiang Yunsui muttered from the side, “They need to be disinfected.”
“Strong liquor can disinfect them.”
Shen Qingzhu gave a hum of acknowledgment. “Who brought liquor?”
Fat Chef scratched his head. “Who’d still be drinking at a time like this?”
Jiang Yunsui said, “Fat Grandpa, the liquor is for disinfecting, not drinking.”
“Oh, oh. I brought some. Just one jar.”
Though he was reluctant, lives were at stake, so Fat Chef still contributed his liquor.
After soaking the needle and thread in liquor, Shen Qingzhu got to work.
Although it was his first time suturing a wound, his hands were very steady.
Once he finished stitching it up, Jiang Yunsui immediately sprinkled the hemostatic powder over it.
