Chapter 47

She waited for a while and then spotted the familiar pair of brothers serving the dishes onto Wang Hu’s table.

Excited, she tugged at Ji Yan’an’s sleeve.

Ji Yan’an struggled to maintain his footing so as not to be pulled over by a certain reckless Little Mushroom, while simultaneously casting a discreet glance toward Wang Hu.

Seeing the man laughing heartily as he gulped down meat and soup, Ji Yan’an felt relieved.

At last, the brothers’ “painstaking efforts” had not gone to waste.

At the same time, a sense of wariness crept into Ji Yan’an’s heart. In the future, he would have to be more careful when selecting the people who served food in his own manor.

If he ever had servants who disliked him this much, he would rather die than face such a situation even once.

Furthermore, one could not afford to offend the chefs either. If they were to be offended, they had to be replaced entirely.

Otherwise, who knew if they would secretly add something extra to the dishes?

Thinking of this, he suddenly realized it had gone a bit quiet beside him.

He looked down, and sure enough, the little girl had vanished again.

She really was the type to disappear the moment he let go.

Jiang Yunsui was currently following the two brothers.

She watched as the two reached a secluded spot and began to stifle their laughter.

The Hot-tempered Brother said with regret, “If I’d known, I would have spat more into it. What a great opportunity. Since I was delivering a soup, he wouldn’t have been able to tell no matter how much I spat in there.”

The Steady Brother gave him a smack. “Keep your voice down.”

Seeing that he didn’t actually refute the idea, Jiang Yunsui guessed he probably agreed.

They were about to continue talking when Jiang Yunsui noticed someone heading their way.

She picked up a small stone and threw it toward them.

The two brothers immediately went on high alert.

“Who’s there?”

By then, the elder Steady Brother also noticed someone passing by. He immediately grabbed his younger brother and hid.

Once the person had left, the two didn’t linger to chat and quickly made their exit.

Jiang Yunsui nodded in satisfaction before wandering off.

She decided to listen around for any gossip in the manor to see if there was any dirt on Wang Hu.

To her surprise, she actually stumbled upon something.

She spotted an old man who looked like a Steward acting suspiciously, heading toward a certain area.

So, she stealthily followed behind him.

She followed the Steward behind a hidden rockery and watched as he fumbled around. Then, he pressed down on an inconspicuous stone.

It turned out to be a switch.

The old man was also excited.

“As expected, I didn’t see wrong last time. It really is here. It’s a good thing I know a bit about mechanical traps; I actually found it.”

After he went inside, Jiang Yunsui looked at the stone with curiosity.

Seeing that the small stone door was about to close, she hurriedly rushed over and managed to squeeze inside just as the door shut.

“Ouch.”

“Who is it!”

Jiang Yunsui let out a soft cry of pain as she fell to the ground. Although the sound was very faint, it was still caught by the high-strung old man in the exceptionally quiet secret passage.

He immediately became vigilant, returning with a lantern in one hand and a dagger in the other.

Jiang Yunsui couldn’t worry about the pain in her knees. She covered her mouth with both small hands. Because she was pressing down so hard out of nervousness, the baby fat on her face squeezed out around her fingers.

She happened to be wedged inside a niche that was just large enough to hold her.

The old man swung his lantern back and forth near the entrance, searching meticulously. The light from his lantern passed over Jiang Yunsui’s hiding spot several times.

But he found nothing.

Afraid that he was running out of time, he assumed he was just too nervous and had misheard. He hurriedly left with his lantern.

Jiang Yunsui looked down at her knees.

They were scraped.

It was fine; this tiny wound wasn’t a problem at all.

Comparing the two, she had been much sturdier back when she was a mushroom. No matter how she fell, she never got hurt.
Human bodies are so fragile.

Since there was only one passage, Jiang Yunsui didn’t have to waste any effort looking for the way. She walked cautiously down the corridor until she reached an underground secret chamber.

“Roar!”

A sudden beastly roar followed by a blood-curdling scream echoed from inside, making Jiang Yunsui tremble in fright.

Before she could see what was happening, an old man covered in blood and dressed in tattered rags came sprinting out, frantic and disoriented. He had dropped his oil lamp, and his face was a mask of pure terror and a desperate will to survive.

Jiang Yunsui quickly ducked out of the way.

Wait… wasn’t this the same old man from before?

From behind the man came the sound of heavy, ragged breathing. A dark shadow flashed past, pinning the old man to the ground.

“Aaaaahhh!!!”

The screaming was so agonizing that Jiang Yunsui crouched on the floor with her hands over her ears, her clear eyes staring at the thing pinning the man down.

It was a massive dog.

It was significantly larger than Heiwa, and its aura was chaotic and violent. Moreover, a foul stench of rotting corpses wafted from it.

Jiang Yunsui recognized that smell; it was the stench that came from eating too many human corpses and never bathing. In her past life, she had seen a man-eating bear that had consumed so many humans it became far more tyrannical and terrifying than any other bear. Eventually, it had been killed by human soldiers.

The old man soon stopped breathing.

The sound of chewing echoed from within the secret chamber.

Jiang Yunsui took the opportunity to slip inside. It was terrifying; she hadn’t expected such a ferocious creature to be kept here. Fortunately, it couldn’t see her.

She didn’t think about turning back yet because she was too curious about what was hidden in this secret room, though she moved with even greater caution.

However, she soon found herself unable to move another step.

Before her were several chests filled with glittering ‘big rocks!’

It was gold-shining, golden money. So much money! It could buy so much food.

There wasn’t just gold, but silver too. They were all in bars; some chests were open, while others remained closed. There were even gold bars scattered across the floor.

She circled the gold bars once before unceremoniously picking one up and stuffing it into her tunic. It was actually quite heavy. As a tiny, useless thing, she couldn’t carry any more than one.

There was so much left, though. What a waste, what a pity!

She had to get back quickly and tell Ji Yan’an so they could move all this big gold and silver back home. Surely she would get a small share of it, right?

Thinking this, she turned around only to come face-to-face with the bloody, massive head of the vicious dog.

In that instant, Jiang Yunsui’s breath nearly stopped.

The beast’s eyes were savage, and bloody saliva dripped from its jaws. Its mouth was wide enough to swallow her in a single bite.

The Little Mushroom clutched the gold bar tightly, her small face turning deathly pale.

‘It can’t see me, it can’t see me.’

She kept repeating the mental suggestion to herself, closing her eyes, not daring to look. But she could clearly feel the foul-smelling breath blowing against her face.

Ugh…

It really stank!

Jiang Yunsui held her breath, her small arms and legs beginning to tremble slightly. Fortunately, after sniffing for a while, the vicious dog seemed to find nothing. It turned away, paced around the secret chamber once, and then lay down.

Jiang Yunsui breathed with extreme care, not daring to make a sound for fear of being discovered by the beast. Then, trembling, she cradled the gold bar and crept toward the passage step by step.

Once she finally reached the corridor, she moved her short legs as fast as they could go, running at full speed. However, when she reached the exit, she spun around twice in a daze.

How… how was she supposed to get out?

“Waaaah… I-I’m not going to be trapped here forever, am I?”

She didn’t want that. It was dark, there was a big, stinky, mean dog, and there was nothing to eat…
