Chapter 289
Chapter 289
News that Jiang Yunsui and a pack of dogs were rescuing wounded soldiers on the battlefield soon reached Ji Yan’an.
He drew a deep breath. “Has she been hurt?”
The deputy general who had come to report hesitated.
“Well?”
The deputy general scratched his head, his expression rather peculiar.
“Miss Jiang is fine. I don’t know why, but every time a weapon nearly hits her, she either falls over, suddenly crouches to pick something up, or turns around to look for something…”
In short, she always managed to avoid danger at exactly the right moment.
Anyone else on that battlefield might be in danger, yet she could wander around freely without the slightest cause for concern.
Ji Yan’an also thought of her bizarre luck.
For a moment, he did not know whether to laugh or sigh.
“Fine. Let her help.”
There was no stopping her anyway.
“Send a few men to assist her and keep an eye on her while they’re at it.”
“Yes, sir!”
*
Jiang Yunsui had lost count of how many people she had saved. Panting from exhaustion, she sat on the ground. Her clothes were covered in blood, some of which had already dried, and there were numerous smears across her face as well.
None of the blood was hers.
“I’m so hungry.”
Rubbing her belly, Jiang Yunsui took a boiled egg from the little backpack she always carried and began nibbling on it.
The egg had gone cold, but it was still edible.
She did not like the yolk, so she gave it to the dogs beside her.
But there were too many dogs and not enough yolk to go around, so she took out several dried mushrooms and fed those to them as well.
Once she had put something in her stomach, Jiang Yunsui clapped the crumbs from her hands.
“You should go eat first. Come back and help after you’re full.”
It should be mealtime by now.
People still needed to eat during a war.
The meals were simply kept basic, with speed taking priority over everything else.
The Cook Battalion had made sweet potato noodles.
Mobei grew a great many sweet potatoes. When the harvest came in, Ji Yan’an had ordered people to buy them in bulk, process them into noodles, and dry them for storage.
Even the pulp left after filtering the sweet potatoes had not gone to waste. It could be fed to pigs, cattle, sheep, and horses.
To them, every part of a sweet potato was precious.
Now that war had broken out, they could simply boil the noodles. They cooked quickly, were easy to season, and, most importantly, filled the stomach.
Jiang Yunsui took the pack of dogs with her to eat.
The dogs fetched their wooden bowls in their mouths and lined up to be served.
Old General Tang seemed to have heard the news as well. Despite his injuries, he came over to see them.
He gazed at the dogs with gratification.
“Heiwa, all of you did very well.”
Heiwa barked happily, then lowered his head and resumed wolfing down his meal.
Jiang Yunsui tilted her filthy little face up at Tang Qingsong.
“Grandpa Tang, you’re hurt. You need to rest properly and stop running around.”
Tang Qingsong stroked her hair.
“I never imagined these dogs could help rescue the wounded.”
He sighed with feeling. “I trained them to serve as scouts on the battlefield and attack the enemy. Every one of them can tear viciously into an enemy’s throat. But I never expected them to save lives too. This is all thanks to you.”
Their present circumstances were different from a battle in the open. Their primary task was to defend Beizhen City, and the dogs could not leave the city to fight the enemy, so they had been of limited use. No one had expected Jiang Yunsui to discover a new role for them by pure chance.
Jiang Yunsui looked rather proud.
“They’re all amazing. Of course, I’m amazing too.”
Old General Tang burst into hearty laughter, only to tug at his wound and wince in pain.
“Good, very good! Who says girls are inferior to boys? You’re such a little girl, yet what you’ve done matters more than what many grown men have accomplished.”
Jiang Yunsui grew even prouder. She thrust out her little chest, suddenly brimming with energy.
“Grandpa Tang, I’m full now. I’m going back to work!”
Tang Qingsong said, “Be careful. Don’t get hurt.”
Jiang Yunsui patted her chest and promised, “Don’t worry. I definitely won’t get hurt.”
Full of confidence, Little Mushroom led her canine brigade back to the battlefield.
They always managed to find the wounded soldiers who were barely clinging to life.
Jiang Yunsui fed them medicine and Imperial Flowing Essence, preserving their last breath.
More and more wounded men were brought back. Some had lost arms or legs, while others had even suffered ruptured intestines.
“Doctor! Doctor! This man’s intestines are torn! Hurry and sew them up!”
Shen Qingzhu had never kept his method of suturing external wounds a secret. He had taught it to all the army’s accompanying doctors.
It was the method most commonly used in military camps, so both doctors and apprentice healers had to learn it.
At that moment, everyone in the medical tents, doctors and apprentices alike, was run off their feet.
“Coming, coming! His injuries are too severe. We need Doctor Sun.”
“It’s you again? You’ve brought us so many wounded men that we can barely keep up.”
An apprentice came over and pressed his hands against the injured man’s abdomen. At the same time, he forced a smile at Jiang Yunsui that looked uglier than a sob.
Jiang Yunsui said, “No need to thank me. It’s what I should do!”
The apprentice: “…”
Fine. It was a human life, after all. The more people who survived, the better. There were simply too few doctors. What a wretched lot they were.
The medical tents were filled with pained groans.
Some of the wounded whom Jiang Yunsui and the dogs had brought back earlier immediately called out when they saw the group passing by.
“Thank you, Miss Jiang.”
“And all of you too, Brother Dogs. Thank you.”
Despite their injuries, they struggled to thank Jiang Yunsui and the pack, even addressing the animals as their canine brothers.
No one wanted to die, even if all they could do was cling desperately to life.
They owed their lives to this child and her pack of dogs.
Jiang Yunsui’s blood-smeared little face broke into a cheerful smile, revealing a row of pearly white teeth.
“You’re welcome!”
After she left, however, Little Mushroom worked with even greater enthusiasm.
She and the dogs threw themselves into the task for the entire day, leaving Little Mushroom utterly exhausted.
Even the energetic dogs were so tired that their tongues lolled from their mouths.
“You worked hard.”
Jiang Yunsui led them back to her little courtyard. Ji Yan’an had not returned yet.
Huohuo, Qianqian and Houhou, and the Black Cat that had been freeloading at her home all came running over.
Exhausted, Jiang Yunsui sprawled across the two large roosters and mumbled, “I’m so tired. But I saved lots and lots of people today.”
She yawned, narrowed her eyes, and folded her short little legs beneath her in a half-awake daze.
Then her small head drooped, her breathing evened out, and she fell asleep.
At that moment, the moon quietly emerged from behind the clouds.
Stars normally faint at this time of year began twinkling brightly across the sky.
Countless rays of golden light rose from the people she had saved in the medical camp. As if drawn by an invisible force, they flew toward the little courtyard.
With every breath Jiang Yunsui took, three currents of power converged before flowing into her body.
All the animals nestled around her sensed a wonderfully soothing aura.
Bathed in that comforting energy, they gathered around Jiang Yunsui and peacefully fell asleep.
The plants in the courtyard began growing wildly.
Then mushrooms sprouted in great numbers from the earth. Some even appeared on the trees.
