Chapter 140
Chapter 140
Everyone enjoyed the meal immensely and left the table completely satisfied.
Jiang Yunsui hadn’t seen Nanmo and was still wondering where he had gone when he soon returned.
He brought Ji Yi and Ji Jiu with him.
Originally, Ji Yan’an had more than twenty hidden guards with him, all named according to their order in the ranks.
But after this assassination attempt, only ten hidden guards remained.
Quite a few of the ordinary guards protecting him had died as well.
Nanmo and the other two hadn’t come back empty-handed. They had brought five sheep with them.
They were fluffy, filthy sheep.
The sheep’s wool was very thick, but wool that thick and abundant easily picked up dirt, grass seeds, and all sorts of other debris.
They honestly looked so dirty that it seemed like no amount of washing could ever get them clean.
After Jiang Yunsui happily greeted Nanmo and the others, she propped her little hands under her chin and stared at the sheep.
One of the sheep had a lamb with it, so there was sheep’s milk.
Fat Chef was milking it, planning to make some milk tea for Jiang Yunsui and Ji Yan’an.
Song Jin had brought tea leaves with him.
“Why are you staring at those sheep like that? Craving mutton? Didn’t you eat enough?”
Jiang Yunsui shook her head and said softly, “No. I just thought the wool might be used to make clothes.”
Nanshu leaned in. “What kind of clothes?”
Jiang Yunsui pushed his face away with her little hand.
“Go farther away. Don’t disturb me while I’m thinking.”
In truth, she was looking through the Inherited Memories related to wool.
There wasn’t any specific method for processing wool. Most of what she saw were all kinds of beautiful clothes, scarves, hats, and the like knitted from wool yarn.
There were also several different knitting techniques and so many patterns.
Just looking at them made her dizzy.
“Wool can be made into yarn, and yarn can be made into clothes.”
Ji Yan’an was wrapped in a thick blanket, expressionless as he drank his medicine.
When he heard Jiang Yunsui’s words, he lifted his eyes and looked at the sheep.
His fingers brushed along the side of the bowl as he quietly committed her words to memory.
He had to admit that, sometimes, the little one’s strange and whimsical ideas really did bring him great surprises.
“Oh, right. Where did these sheep come from?”
Only then did Jiang Yunsui remember to ask.
Nanmo stood behind Ji Yan’an, expressionless, holding a sword in his arms.
“Stolen.”
Jiang Yunsui blinked. “Huh???”
Stolen? And you said it so confidently, too.
Was this something you could teach a child?
Nanshu chuckled. “We stole them from the Quanrong Tribe. Their tribe is good at raising dogs, and they’re dogs bred with wolves. They also keep hawks. Those bastards are terrifyingly good at tracking people.
“When we were escaping earlier, we injured quite a few of the dogs they sent after us. Add Shen Qingzhu into the mix, and they’ve become completely determined to make trouble for us. But we weren’t about to just take it lying down, so every now and then we’d send a few skilled people over to swipe something.”
Jiang Yunsui leaned closer, her eyes sparkling.
“Is there more? Did anything else happen?”
She wanted to hear it.
Nanshu lowered his voice mysteriously. “Oh, plenty. Let me tell you, these grassland tribes really don’t care about propriety. The tribe chief’s youngest son was born to his eldest sister-in-law.”
Jiang Yunsui’s eyes went round.
“On the grasslands, after a man from most tribes dies, his brother, or his son if he inherits the position of family head, will inherit his women as well. The former chief of the Quanrong Tribe was the current chief’s elder brother. After his elder brother died, he became chief, so naturally, his sister-in-law became his woman too.”
Jiang Yunsui nodded. She got it, she got it.
Then a hand pressed down on her head.
Ji Yan’an gave Nanshu a chilly look.
“Go deal with the wool.”
Nanshu immediately shut his mouth, then left with a miserable expression.
That stuff really did reek of mutton.
Jiang Yunsui looked up at Ji Yan’an with wide, expectant eyes. “What is it?”
“Don’t listen to all that messy nonsense. It’s bad for you.”
Jiang Yunsui pouted. “It’s not messy nonsense.”
“Ji Yan’an, are you cold? If you want me to warm your hands, just say so. Don’t be embarrassed.”
“Here, you can have my hand.”
Ji Yan’an did not stand on ceremony. He tucked her hand into his and slumped back against the chair, exuding the air of someone who wanted to die but unfortunately was not allowed to.
“Ji Yan’an, is there anything else going on with the Quanrong Tribe? Can you tell me about it?”
Ji Yan’an drawled, “No.”
Jiang Yunsui gave him a reproachful look. “I think you’re just not paying attention. It’s so interesting.”
“If you won’t tell me, then I’ll tell you. The chicken from the bun seller’s family was stolen, and they suspect it was the son of the naan seller next door because he’s always loafing around and has a record.
“The two families started arguing. They were originally going to confront the naan seller’s son, but unexpectedly, they caught their daughter together with that son. Then they started fighting…”
Whenever Jiang Yunsui got bored at home, she would often slip out to wander around and enjoy the gossip.
After the Barbarian Army was driven away, the people in the city gradually regained their old vitality, and Qiusha Prefecture City became lively again.
The main reason was that they all had to make a living. After being shut indoors in fear for so long, their food was nearly gone, and their families were running out of money.
So even if they were afraid, they still had to come out and earn money to buy food.
As she spoke, Jiang Yunsui yawned, then simply sprawled across Ji Yan’an’s lap, ready to sleep.
“Ji Yan’an, where did this chair of yours come from?”
Half-asleep, Jiang Yunsui asked in a muffled voice.
Ji Yan’an paused. Just as Jiang Yunsui was about to drift off, she seemed to hear him say,
“Borrowed it.”
Little Mushroom thought, Borrowed it from where? The Quanrong Tribe? Was it borrowed in the normal sense?
The Quanrong Tribe really had the worst luck running into you people.
That night, Jiang Yunsui squatted at the cave entrance and cultivated.
Grow mushrooms, grow mushrooms…
When it was time to sleep, she did not want to stay outside anymore, so she went into the cave to find Ji Yan’an. She had thought the conditions in the wilderness would be poor, and that the sleeping arrangements would be poor too.
Unexpectedly, the place they slept had several layers of sheepskin laid out. Although there was still a bit of a smell, it was warm.
A few wolf pelts were spread on the very top.
What Ji Yan’an used as a blanket was a tiger pelt, along with his heavy cloak.
When Jiang Yunsui asked about it…
Ji Yan’an said, “Borrowed it.”
He said it with perfect confidence too.
Jiang Yunsui asked, “Then are you going to return what you borrowed?”
Ji Yan’an’s expression did not change. “We’ll see later.”
Little Mushroom stared at him with dead-fish eyes.
She knew it. There was a reason the Quanrong Tribe had chased after them.
He was treating the Quanrong Tribe like his own supply depot, wasn’t he? Whatever he lacked, he went and took. And he called that borrowing? Why don’t you ask whether they were willing or not?
Ji Yan’an had a rare good night’s sleep. Holding Jiang Yunsui, this little hand warmer, was truly comfortable, and she carried a pleasant fragrance that even made him overlook the muttony smell of the sheepskin beneath him, as well as the wild animal musk from the wolf and tiger pelts.
Perhaps his body was simply too exhausted. Holding Jiang Yunsui, he slept deeply and did not dream at all.
But at that moment, startled cries came from outside the cave.
Ji Yan’an was woken up. Although he was somewhat irritated, his mind was much clearer than before.
Even his complexion looked a few shades healthier.
He opened his eyes, and Jiang Yunsui also sat up, rubbing hers.
Then they saw several people at the cave entrance, some squatting on the ground and some standing there, all staring dumbfounded at the mushrooms filling the entire cave.
Yes. The whole cave, even the rocky ceiling above, had sprouted mushrooms.
