The young man stood up with a chuckle and nodded. “Yeah, there was more to it than that. If I hurt the Village Chief over that alone, I’d be worse than an animal. The truth is, I got together with his daughter.”
A murder case had suddenly turned into a messy family soap opera.
The people present still had not recovered when the young man went on, “His daughter didn’t know who I was, and I was in the dark too. Don’t make us out to be that filthy. It was a very pure and beautiful relationship.
“Later, when my dad came to claim me as his son, I suddenly realized that my girlfriend and I weren’t just soulmates in terms of money. We were connected by blood.”

Wang Qiang added from behind, “Sometimes when I get paid, I really want to call the police. Then I remember I am the police, so I have no choice but to give myself a hug.”
After saying that, he went to hug Wu Xiaojiu, only for Bo Suihan to press a hand against his forehead and push him back.
“There are plenty of people here. Pick someone else.”

Bo Suihan, the young man, and Senior had already opened the door and taken seats in the back.
Wang Qiang’s driver’s seat was kicked. He looked back and saw Bo Suihan sitting there with his arms crossed, smiling at him.
“I don’t mind being the other man.”
Wang Qiang started the car and looked at him in speechless disbelief.
“There are children in the car. Stop spreading improper ideas, or I’ll report you.”
The atmosphere in the car was pretty good.
It had been evening earlier. After they had driven for a while, it became proper midnight.
The young man dozed off in the back seat. About half an hour later, he woke up and started rummaging through the car for emergency rations. He actually managed to find the instant noodles Wang Qiang had hidden away.
Crunching filled the car, making the others feel drowsy and exhausted.

Bo Suihan patted the wrinkles out of his clothes, opened the rear door, and switched places with him.

Up ahead, around a bend in the mountain road, came the sound of a car trying to start.
At the same time, a man’s voice cursed furiously.

On a night this dark, with the village sealed off, anyone coming down the mountain at midnight was probably from the Dog Farm.
The group exchanged looks, their drowsiness vanishing at once. Senior and Wang Qiang were the first to strip off their conspicuous clothes, then moved the sticks to somewhere within easy reach.
Bo Suihan honked twice to get the man’s attention up ahead.
Sure enough, a head poked out from around the bend. Beneath that head were dozens of dog heads, large and small.
Without exception, every one of those dogs was a vicious breed. They were huge, fattened up until they were solid and muscular, and the moment they saw the unfamiliar vehicle, they shook their heads, wagged their tails, and barked like mad.
The man impatiently kicked them one by one.
Then he dug at his ear and carefully sized up the unfamiliar vehicle. At this point, he was still on guard.
Until the young man got out of the car, pointed at his own car, then at him.
“Don’t think that just because Dad acknowledged you, you’ll get the whole inheritance. He invested several million in this Dog Farm, but on paper, it’s all under my name. Dad still values me more.”

The young man smiled at him.
“You’re still worrying about that when we’re both stuck out here? Why are you heading down the mountain this late? Got any rope in your car? Let my car tow yours.”
The burly man lowered his head and looked at the dog leashes in his hand. Walking down the mountain was out of the question. If he turned back alone, something might happen to the dogs. If he carried the dogs back, it would take too much strength.

He tossed the young man a rope.
At the same time, he shone a flashlight through the glass into the other car.

“They’re all my buddies. I’ve only got that crappy little motorcycle, and it can’t make it up the mountain, so I had Dad send this one over for me.”
The burly man nodded, finally putting his heart back in his chest.
He took out a rope and tossed it to the young man, who fastened it to the front of the car.
“It’s all downhill going down the mountain, and the road’s hard to drive. I’ll load the dogs back into the car. You drive your car uphill.”
With that, he turned and walked away. Inside the car, everyone had been strung tighter than the next, afraid he would recognize someone.
Now, watching the burly man’s back disappear little by little, they finally felt their hearts settle back into place.
They never expected the burly man to turn back. All of a sudden, he backed up with the dog leashes in hand.
He pointed into the car and looked at the young man.
Senior went tense. He clutched Bo Suihan’s arm, his voice and body both trembling.
“Did he recognize me?”
