Chapter 48

“Don’t be like this. If it’s because of the engagement, I can call off the engagement, and I can let you meet Feng Jiutian in person so she can explain it to you herself.”

Bo Suihan said it in a steady, deliberate tone.

Wu Xiaojiu watched him carefully. He did not look like he was lying. After a long silence, he nodded.

“Fine, one meeting then. But can you disinfect my hand first? Don’t you know incompatible blood can cause a rejection reaction? Forget it. I don’t want to talk to someone with no common sense.”

He scolded him without holding back.

Bo Suihan lowered his head slightly, and Wu Xiaojiu used the chance to pull his hand away.

Wu Xiaojiu shook the liquid off his palm.

He was about to get out of bed and find something to disinfect it with when Bo Suihan raised a hand to stop him and reached for the remote control on the nightstand.

The remote looked plain enough, like an ordinary air-conditioner remote, and didn’t draw much attention.

But when he brought it closer and looked again, there was more to it than met the eye.

Each button had a corresponding label underneath it.

“Nanny, housekeeper, doctor, chef, …”

Wu Xiaojiu squinted at it, then suddenly widened his eyes in disbelief.

Before long, Bo Suihan pressed the driver and doctor buttons right in front of him.

Less than a minute later.

Heavy footsteps sounded from downstairs, thumping up the stairs.

The door was slowly pushed open, and a man in a white coat and a driver in a suit appeared at the doorway.

Bo Suihan first waved the man in the white coat over, and he came up at once.

The driver tactfully closed the door and stood outside by himself.

Was Long Aotian really living this comfortably?

Wu Xiaojiu looked down at the man in the white coat gently disinfecting his hand, his mouth falling open in an O.

No matter how much he had seen, he had never imagined people being summoned like this.

Long Aotian really knew how to live.

After both of their palms were wrapped in gauze, the doctor withdrew on his own, and the driver opened the door and came in.

He gave the two of them a respectful bow.

“Young Master, what are your orders?”

“Tell the butler to inform Miss Feng. The Bo Family will do as she wishes. Tonight, we hope she can come to Baijinghui Hotel. There are some specific matters that need to be discussed in person.”

“Set the meeting for nine o’clock. We’re leaving now.”

Unexpectedly, it was already night again.

Wu Xiaojiu sat down inside the familiar yet unfamiliar Rolls-Royce, his feelings complicated.

A few days ago, he had still been a paparazzo locked in a dog cage, left to be beaten and cursed at by others. Yesterday, he had still been scrounging around for someone else’s leftover wine bottles to drink.

Today, he had turned his life around by relying on Long Aotian. He just didn’t know when he would be able to see his parents and sister.

At the thought of that, he suddenly felt a little down.

Wu Xiaojiu rested a hand on the window and looked at the scenery outside. Right then, Bo Suihan’s phone rang.

He took out the latest iPhone from the side. Somewhere along the way, the old Nokia had already been replaced.

In just a few months, Bo Suihan had gone from a poor young man living under a bridge to the man who effectively held power in Jing Province.

The scale of the change was hard to put into words.

“New clothes are better than old ones. Men are better when they’re old.”

The window had been opened a little too wide, and the wind poured into Wu Xiaojiu’s mouth. There was no moonlight, no starlight at night, yet that only made this city seem even more extravagant and wasteful.

He was sighing at the night scenery when Bo Suihan answered the phone with one hand and reached over with the other to close the window on Wu Xiaojiu’s side.

The wind vanished at once.

The man in front of him looked at him, while the person on the other end of the call stayed silent and remained connected.

Bo Suihan’s eyes were cold in the darkness.

“New clothes are better than old ones. Men are better when they’re old. Are you reminding me not to forget the old one? Wu Xiaojiu, I’m not that heartless.”
Bo Suihan had always been this good at filling in the blanks.

There was no point explaining, no point arguing. In the end, Wu Xiaojiu basically meant the same thing anyway.

He went along with it and nodded.

That nod made Bo Suihan happy. He shifted a little closer, and the two of them sat nearer together.

The distance was still there, but not much. Wu Xiaojiu could hear the voice on the other end of the phone.

It was a woman’s voice.

Gentle and lovely in a way that was hard to describe.

“Suihan, is everything going smoothly? If anyone dares to make things hard for you or be harsh with you, you have to tell your masters. You’ve always kept things bottled up inside since you were little, just like a mute gourd.”

Bo Suihan laughed softly and answered with a few humming sounds.

“Don’t think that because you’re doing well now, you can let your guard down. The Bo Family offended a lot of people back then. A little nobody like Wang Xiao, some third-rate trash not even worth mentioning, could still take your life. You have to be careful.”

The voice on the other end suddenly changed, turning cool and aloof.

Bo Suihan still kept answering with repeated agreement. After the other side nagged him for a while longer, the call finally ended.

“My masters took me in after the Bo Family was wiped out. It was probably when I was six or seven. They brought me up from the age when everyone hated me and even dogs wouldn’t bother with me, all the way to now.”

A rare warmth showed on Bo Suihan’s face.

Although his masters usually didn’t care much about his emotional or physical well-being, they really did teach him things.

What Bo Suihan had today could be said to have come entirely from those nine masters of his.

“Young master, we’re almost there. After the car is parked, Miss Feng has invited you to meet in the old private room.”

The two of them didn’t say much after that.

Then they got out of the car and went upstairs.

Baijinghui really did a good job with this entertainment venue. Everything inside was fully equipped. But that wasn’t the main point. Most people came here because of Bo Suihan’s reputation.

Most of them were here to give him face.

The suspended staircase led all the way up to the 99th floor.

They stopped at the Ten-Thousand-Tael Gold Private Room, and Bo Suihan pushed the door open and walked straight in.

Before seeing the person, they heard the voice first.

Feng Jiutian’s voice was every bit as aggressive as she was. Sharp, brisk, and not easy to deal with.

“You’ve finally decided to cancel the engagement? Say it. What do you want? As long as it’s not too much, I can keep it from those old fossils and get you to sign it.”

“You have someone you care about, and so do I. You don’t want her to misunderstand, and I don’t want mine to misunderstand either. I only called you here to ask for a favor.”

The two sides pulled out chairs and sat down. Wu Xiaojiu looked around curiously.

He saw that Feng Jiutian was dressed in fiery red today. She wore a vintage red leather coat, and her hair fell in thick red waves, like seaweed.

She sat there, fierce and beautiful, like a strong drink with a burning kick.

The kind Wu Song would have dared to drink before going off to fight a tiger.

What drew the eye most, though, was the rainbow bracelet on her wrist. If he wasn’t mistaken, that kind of accessory usually showed up in certain bars.

Wu Xiaojiu narrowed his eyes.

He was about seventy or eighty percent sure of his guess.

That kind of thing wasn’t unusual, after all. Eat the same food for too long and you’ll get bored of it. Spend your whole life with one man and you’ll get bored of that too. So if you keep to one gender for long enough, you’d get tired of that as well.

Wu Xiaojiu just assumed Feng Jiutian wanted to try something new.

Who would have thought she’d start with,

“He and I don’t have any feelings for each other, and we hardly have any interaction. If I had to put it in one phrase, we’re going our own way. This engagement is nothing more than an empty shell. I like someone else.”

“Please make it clearer. He’s not very bright, and I’m afraid he’ll think we’re just putting on a show.”

Feng Jiutian reluctantly began to explain.
