Chapter 28
Chapter 28
After he finished explaining, he suddenly felt like an idiot.
Why was he so flustered? They were just ordinary friends. Even if he really did end up with Qi Jiao, it had nothing to do with Bo Suihan.
In that moment, Wu Xiaojiu’s spine straightened a bit. He opened his mouth, ready to argue logically.
But Bo Suihan shut him up again with another sugar-tongued “lover boy.”
“Do what you want. I’m just observing.”
Sarcastic sniping, stirring the pot and pouring oil on the fire.
Wu Xiaojiu stared at Bo Suihan’s retreating back.
The corner of his lips twitched involuntarily.
Nutjob.
Wang Xiao, on the other hand, was brimming with curiosity about the weird tension crackling between them.
His eyes darted around, and the moment Bo Suihan stepped out to light a cigarette, he scurried over to Wu Xiaojiu.
He jabbed a finger into Wu Xiaojiu’s back.
“What’s the story? Did you get caught fooling around?”
“Piss off. We’re just ordinary friends, and Bo Suihan is an ordinary friend too. We aren’t a couple, not dating. Don’t use such loaded language.”
Wang Xiao laughed and elbowed Wu Xiaojiu none too gently.
“Acting, still acting? No confession, not dating, yet that walking ice cube Bo Suihan talks to you like that? He struts around like a high lord every other day. Why would he lower himself to pry into your personal matters?”
Wang Xiao was still muttering when a wisp of smoke drifted in from the doorway.
He sprang to his feet.
Pointing at the door, he hollered as he ran out: “Bo Suihan, this is the Police Station! Take your cigarette outside!”
Both of them charged out.
Wu Xiaojiu stayed behind, crouching next to the dead woman’s body.
His thoughts raced in countless directions.
He couldn’t be sure whether Bo Suihan’s affection rating of over ninety was genuine or feigned. For someone like Wu Xiaojiu, who had grown up drowning in love, loving a person required a long trial period.
But Bo Suihan was starved for affection. The love he had to give had been blocked for so long, with no one to receive it.
Prolonged suppression – it was like a child raised in poverty suddenly being handed a cup of milk tea by a stranger.
Who cared if you were a kidnapper? When even your own parents wouldn’t give you something so nice, the person who did was definitely a good guy.
That was probably exactly how Bo Suihan’s mind worked right now.
Pitiful, and far too easily won over.
Wu Xiaojiu crouched on the ground, tracing circles, until a foot nudged his knee.
Wang Xiao bent down, a cheeky grin spreading across his face. “Come on, young master. Your husband and I are heading to the Interrogation Room. You might as well tag along for the entertainment.”
How could a love affair ever beat a good case?
Wu Xiaojiu brushed the dust off his knees, stood, and followed.
Inside the Interrogation Room of the Police Station, Bo Suihan had already settled himself in front of the couple.
“Aren’t interrogation rooms generally for one suspect at a time? Why are two people sitting across from us?” Wu Xiaojiu asked, puzzled.
The door swung open, and Bo Suihan instinctively glanced over. Spotting Wu Xiaojiu, he pointed to the seat beside him. “Special circumstances. Sit here for now.”
“No.”
Wu Xiaojiu moved to grab a chair from elsewhere.
Bo Suihan had already risen, snagged him, and shoved him down into the chair at his side.
He threw Wu Xiaojiu a frosty glare. “I’m not that pathetic. You turned me down, so we’ll take things slow, got it? I’m telling you to sit next to me because you’ll need to take your cues from me later.”
Wu Xiaojiu couldn’t help thinking: Is he under the impression this is a TV drama? Take my cues from him? Can I even read his signals?
With those two fake policemen occupying the seats meant for the case officer, Wang Xiao had no choice but to pull up another chair from the corner.
He plopped down sulkily next to Wu Xiaojiu.
“Your husband sure gets comfortable,” he muttered under his breath, then immediately shifted gears.
Wang Xiao’s face hardened into a stern mask. He slammed the table and jabbed a finger at the pair in front of him. “Spill it. What exactly happened that day? Every word you say from now on will be documented and used in court, so I strongly suggest you both be honest and don’t try any funny business.”
Murderers are all sons of bitches.
If they wanted to get anything out of them, they couldn’t be too straightforward.
Wang Xiao understood that principle perfectly, and Bo Suihan naturally did too.
So after saying that, the two of them deliberately shot Wu Xiaojiu a look.
Wu Xiaojiu didn’t catch on right away. By the time he realized what they meant…
Eldest Miss Zhao, sitting right in front of them, had already burst into tears.
“We really didn’t kill anyone. I don’t know what happened with that body. It just suddenly appeared in my luggage. I was scared, that’s all. That’s why I didn’t call the police and just panicked and ran out with him.”
As Miss Zhao spoke, she nudged the man beside her.
The man hurriedly nodded as well.
Wang Xiao slapped the table lightly.
“Bodies don’t teleport. How could one suddenly appear in your luggage? Besides, there was a gap between when you dumped the body and when the hotel called the police. Why didn’t you run out of town? Why did you go straight to an alley to have breakfast?”
That was the most baffling part of the case.
Who killed someone, dumped the body, got their face caught on surveillance, and then calmly dragged their accomplice to the next alley over for breakfast?
If you said Eldest Miss Zhao and this man had no intention of running, then when the police caught them, they fled in a panic like rabbits.
If you said they did intend to run…
There had been a three- to four-hour gap between the hotel calling the police and them dumping the body. That was more than enough time to leave town.
But the two of them didn’t.
They went to the alley next door for breakfast.
When the police found them, both of them had their mouths greasy from eating, and that man had even grabbed a fried dough stick before running.
Wasn’t that pure insanity?
Were they playing games with the police?
Was this whole you-chase-me-I-run thing supposed to be exciting?
“It was our first time running into something like this too. Besides, we didn’t kill anyone, so why would we run? Wouldn’t that just make people think we were suspects even more?
“If we didn’t run, we were hungry, and staying in the hotel wasn’t an option either, so we just wanted to go out and clear our heads. Officer, you have to believe me. We really didn’t kill anyone!”
Wang Xiao waved a hand.
By now, Miss Zhao was crying so hard her nose was running and tears were streaming down her face.
The Zhao Family was wealthy and noble, and they had never been stingy when raising their daughter. Miss Zhao had grown up in a honey jar. When had she ever encountered anything like this?
At this point, she was completely panicked and had lost all sense of what to do.
The man beside her looked at her like this.
He seemed somewhat moved too.
His rough hands patted the young lady’s back as he tried to keep his voice low, clumsily coaxing her in broken speech.
“Whatcha cryin’ for? We ain’t the ones who killed nobody. Worst comes to worst, I’ll take the blame and let you go.”
That accent made Wu Xiaojiu’s brows rise.
He couldn’t help asking, “You’re not from around here, are you? You’re tanned dark as anything, and you don’t look like some rich young master. How did you meet Miss Zhao? And when did you meet her?”
That question hit the mark.
Because the man rarely spoke, and because he wasn’t ugly, even fairly handsome,
and because he and Miss Zhao had booked a king-bed room at the hotel,
the police had naturally assumed the two of them were a couple.
But in reality, they were not.
The rough man lifted his head, then shook it blankly. He pointed at his own ears and waved his hand.
“He can’t hear,” Miss Zhao sobbed, speaking for him.
“This man is a Deaf Man. Because of that, the two of them were brought in together for questioning. No one at the Police Station knows sign language, so we can only ask Miss Zhao to translate on the side. Miss Zhao, answer the questions for him.”
“I don’t know his surname or his given name, and I know even less about where his home is. All I know is that we met yesterday.”
With that one sentence, the entire interrogation room fell silent.
Wu Xiaojiu scratched his head, opened his mouth, then stopped himself.
In the end, it was Wang Xiao who picked up the thread.
“You don’t even know his name, and you only met him yesterday, yet you took your luggage and everything you owned and ran off to get a room with him?”
