Chapter 50
Chapter 50
Seeing Wu Xiaojiu so worked up, Qi Jiao was afraid he was going to lose his mind.
Qi Jiao hurriedly lowered his head and tried to calm him down.
“After you left, the Wu Family went into a slump. It happened to be the end of the month, and this month’s valuation agreement still hadn’t been settled. They were supposed to cover the losses under the agreement, but your cousin said that if the village chief’s son married into the family, they wouldn’t have to pay that loss amount.
Your parents refused at first, but later your sister, Yu Ting, secretly…”
There was no need to spell it out. Wu Xiaojiu knew exactly what kind of person his sister was.
She always shouldered everything herself.
Wu Xiaojiu lowered his head, unable to say what he was feeling. When he looked up again, the emotion had already spread across his face-his neck and ears were flushed red, and tears had smeared his whole face.
“Can’t we send him back? Since when did our family need my sister to hold everything up? Why should my sister be the sacrifice? At worst, we’ll just pay the losses according to the contract. I’ll go beg Bo Suihan, I’ll go beg people- even if I have to smash my head open kowtowing, I’ll make up the money for them.”
As he spoke, Wu Xiaojiu lost control and was about to rush out the door. Qi Jiao kept blocking him and only then managed to drag this hotheaded calf back.
“What’s the use? The marriage certificate is already done. Besides, do you know how much they want under that agreement? A full 1.3 billion! What a good friend you have, willing to pay 1.3 billion for you.”
It was like a blow to the head.
It really knocked Wu Xiaojiu into sudden clarity.
He slumped into a chair and covered his face, crying soundlessly.
The Wu Family was thrown into a fit of crying and shouting.
It wasn’t until one in the morning that everyone finally went back to their rooms.
Qi Jiao gently wiped away the tears at the corners of Wu Xiaojiu’s eyes. Seeing his eyes swollen red from crying, Qi Jiao felt bad too.
“Stop crying. If the Qi Family weren’t strapped for cash right now, I’d get that 1.3 billion for you even if I had to borrow it. Seeing you like this makes me feel awful too.”
Wu Xiaojiu’s face was already small and short; after crying until it swelled up, he looked like a white steamed bun.
He had cried so hard he couldn’t tell east from west anymore. Hearing that, he only lifted his face. Beneath his bloodshot eyes, the scrunched-up skin on his face formed a tiny triangular hollow.
Qi Jiao reached out and poked that little dent.
“It’s fine. This marriage exists in name only. Since he’s in our house, isn’t it up to us how we deal with him? Besides, Yu Ting is smart. An idiot like that can’t do anything to her.”
Wu Xiaojiu wiped away his tears and shook his arm, which was dotted with tiny beads of tears.
“And now that you’re back, don’t you want to teach Wu Dan a lesson? This marriage was all arranged by Wu Dan from start to finish. He spent a lot of money on your sister. Are we really going to let Wu Dan keep strutting around like he got his way?”
Wu Xiaojiu’s eyes slanted slightly, and his teeth slowly clenched together.
Last time Wu Dan came, Wu Xiaojiu already knew Wu Dan was no good. He had warned Wu Dan once, and Wu Dan still came back to make trouble.
This time, his own sister had been dragged into it. So what about next time?
The Wu Family’s business? His parents? Or himself?
Qi Jiao coaxed him in a soft voice.
Just like when they were kids, whenever Wu Xiaojiu bumped into something or scraped himself and burst into tears, Qi Jiao had always soothed him like this.
He didn’t notice at all that Wu Xiaojiu had already grown up, and had even gotten beaten up over in Eastern Europe.
His mood and temper had long since drifted away from how they used to be.
“How about I stuff them into an unmarked car, burn up their ID cards and household registration books, and ship them off to Eastern Europe to work as paparazzi?”
Wu Xiaojiu suddenly stopped crying.
He realized there was no use crying. It was better to think about the situation he was in now.
How could he make himself feel better? How could he ease his own heart a little while making someone else suffer more?
After all, people don’t live this one life to do good deeds and accumulate virtue. They live it to make themselves feel good, to live a little more freely.
He had been born under a lucky star, born into the Wu Family as its young master.
If he still had to swallow this kind of humiliation, how was he any different from the beasts in the Animal Path?
“What did you say?”
Qi Jiao’s brows drew together in disbelief.
In his memory, Wu Xiaojiu was a pure-hearted good kid.
“Sell him and that idiot together to Eastern Europe to work as smugglers. If nobody wants him, that doesn’t matter. Doesn’t he still have organs that can be used? There are always organizations willing to take those.
When the police ask, just say they were both trafficked while traveling. We can even push it online and win some good publicity for my sister and our family.”
Wu Xiaojiu grew more and more excited as he spoke. Mid-sentence, he even pulled his phone out of his pocket, ready to carry out the plan.
Qi Jiao hurried over to stop him.
He called him by every title he could think of before finally snatching the phone away from the reluctant look on the other man’s face.
“Are you crazy? How could you even think of something like that? Have you thought about what happens if the plan gets out? You’ll end up in jail!”
Wu Xiaojiu folded his arms and paced around the room.
After a long while, he turned back and gave a cold laugh.
“He could sell my sister to make money, so why can’t I sell his whole family to make money? Qi Jiao, you must have seen plenty of this kind of thing in Eastern Europe. Why are you acting so surprised?”
After saying that, Wu Xiaojiu turned around and went back to his bedroom.
He really had nothing else to say here. Looking at the baby chair that idiot had used only made him feel even more stifled.
Back in the familiar bedroom, the spare phone in the cabinet suddenly rang.
Wu Xiaojiu was in no mood to answer. Folding his arms, he closed his eyes and planned to wait for the other side to hang up on its own.
But the calls kept coming one after another, until it irritated him so much that he couldn’t focus.
In the end, he opened the cabinet and was about to block the number outright.
“Wang Xiao? Where did he get this number?”
The name made Wu Xiaojiu pause for a moment before he tapped the answer button.
“Xiaojiu? Where are you right now? I’m under a bridge. Didn’t we just finish drinking together?”
This guy had blacked out.
Wu Xiaojiu frowned and said, “I’m at the Wu Family’s place now. It’s been a full day since we drank. It’s cold under a bridge, so you’d better hurry home.”
The wind howled on the other end of the line.
Wang Xiao’s voice was full of urgency.
“How can you go back to the Wu Family?!”
The moment he said it, he immediately realized something was wrong.
He quickly corrected himself.
“The Wu Family doesn’t even acknowledge you, right? You didn’t go back there as some kind of counterfeit, did you? Listen to me, don’t take that crap lying down. If it really doesn’t work, come live under the bridge with me.”
Since when had Wang Xiao become so concerned about him?
Wu Xiaojiu looked faintly puzzled.
He’d lost too much to this guy before; he had no choice but to stay on guard.
“What do you mean, live under a bridge with you? Aren’t you supposed to be some great detective? You still don’t even have your own place in this city?”
The other end fell silent.
After a long pause, Wang Xiao clicked his tongue.
“Haven’t you noticed I’ve fallen on hard times? The police stations don’t hire me anymore. Now I can only take little private-investigator jobs, like catching cheating spouses. I’m almost not even able to support myself.
But seriously, are you sure Bo Suihan didn’t set the Wu Family up? Then why did he give money to Wu Dan? Don’t tell me it’s because he’s charitable. A businessman being charitable? Just thinking about it is ridiculous.”
Wu Xiaojiu was already irritated by the name Wu Dan.
Hearing it brought up, he frowned and scratched at his hair.
“Don’t bring that up. Hasn’t it caused enough trouble already? If I’m not mistaken, the police not hiring you anymore probably has something to do with this.
Wang Xiao, what good does it do you to keep going after Bo Suihan like this?”
He kept bringing it up again and again, and even Wu Xiaojiu, slow as he was, finally realized Wang Xiao was targeting him.
