Chapter 65
Chapter 65
Once they were out of the basement, the air immediately felt much fresher.
While the intern was carrying the body to the forensic lab for examination, Wu Xiaojiu planned to call home and ask about Wu Yuting’s current condition.
But the moment he unlocked his phone,
a few messages started popping up one after another.
He opened the chat window and found that the sender was none other than the Bo Suihan who had just been mocked as if he were already dead.
He didn’t look dead now, but he was a little too excited.
The messages kept coming in. By the time Wu Xiaojiu unlocked his phone screen, five had already arrived in succession, and even after he entered the chat, the messages were still refreshing nonstop.
[Has he gone crazy? Didn’t you say he was currently encountering the Five Dharma Celestial Maidens? This state doesn’t look like he’s fallen for someone else.]
The System had been silent in his mind, but the instant Wu Xiaojiu froze after unlocking his phone, it let out a screech right on his heels.
[Am I seeing things? Isn’t the Long Aotian type supposed to be cool, aloof, and showy as hell? Why are these messages so frequent now, like a WeChat mini-program? Look carefully. Could these be some questioning messages?]
Wu Xiaojiu narrowed his eyes and looked closely at the chat content the other side had sent.
After the string of messages he had sent three minutes ago, Bo Suihan had actually replied within less than a minute.
Maybe the signal in the basement had been bad. None of those messages had made much of a splash and had been blocked by the weak reception.
Only now did he see that Bo Suihan had answered each part of his message one by one, and after that had even sent a whole string of messages asking if he was thirsty, hungry, or tired from handling the case like some overbearing old housekeeper.
Probably because he had waited too long for a reply on his side. Since Wu Xiaojiu had been in the basement for quite a while without responding, Bo Suihan simply stopped asking pointless questions and started transferring money instead.
The chat platform had a transfer limit of 100,000.
Bo Suihan sent 520 transfers of 999,999 each.
Wu Xiaojiu swiped through the chat page, and the screen was packed edge to edge with orange transfer notifications.
[What the hell is this?]
Even the System felt like its brain buffer was no longer enough and quietly went silent.
Leaving Wu Xiaojiu alone, utterly windblown.
“The DNA comparison results are out. Come in and take a look.”
It was only when the intern’s shout came from the DNA room that Wu Xiaojiu finally collected himself a little and replied to the other side with, “I’m not taking the red packets. Opening them one by one is too tiring.”
Then he hurriedly shoved his phone into his pocket and sprinted into the DNA room.
“The result is excellent. The DNA match reached an astonishing 100 percent. We can basically confirm that this head belongs to this body. Special thanks to you, Comrade Wu Xiaojiu, for helping this body recover its lost item.”
Looking at the numbers on top, the intern solemnly extended his hand to Wu Xiaojiu.
“Getting a result like this today is truly rare for a high school student like you. As long as you make it past the legal age for Grade Twelve, I think you’d absolutely be able to work as an external consultant detective! By then, you’ll be able to escape being… ended.”
The last two words were mumbled indistinctly. Wu Xiaojiu was too caught up in the joy to hear them clearly.
He simply reached out, and the two of them clasped hands. The intern then shook Wu Xiaojiu’s hand with great seriousness and force.
Now that the DNA comparison was out, this result definitely had to be reported upward. The intern was planning to organize the materials and take photos and screenshots to send to the relevant department colleagues.
Unexpectedly, before he could even look for them, they came looking for him first.
“Get ready. Something big has happened. The information those two big guys confessed may be wrong. This afternoon, we sent people to their hometown to supervise the stitching of the body and head, and it turned out the body cavity and the head don’t match for reattachment.”
Wu Xiaojiu eavesdropped.
What a mess. One wave had barely settled before another rose.
One head had only just been matched to its body when another suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
“Okay, I have some materials on my end that need to be submitted and uploaded too. I’ll email them to you.”
The intern nodded. After hanging up, he forwarded the DNA comparison screenshot he had on hand to a colleague by email.
Then he turned to Wu Xiaojiu.
“I may be an intern, but the police station’s been short-staffed lately, so I’m doing about the same work as a Senior. It’s getting late now. If the head and body still don’t match up, I may have to make a trip to the local precinct too and do an on-site inspection. By then, what you’ll be seeing is the real crime scene. You look pretty scared like this, so maybe you should go home.”
Wu Xiaojiu was honestly a little uneasy too.
Things kept surfacing bit by bit, and more and more nameless heads were turning up. The killer was still unknown. There might be two bodies, or three; these two or three cases might all have been done by the same person.
No one knew whose house would be hit next.
But the System had said that this case was closely tied to the Bo Family massacre, and in the end Wu Xiaojiu steeled himself.
He nodded at the intern.
“It’s fine. Don’t worry about me. I won’t be scared. If I go to the crime scene, maybe I’ll even find something unexpected.”
The intern hadn’t expected that reaction.
He clicked his tongue, nodded, and patted Wu Xiaojiu on the shoulder.
“Comrade, stay strong!”
The two of them bantered back and forth, and by then, the patrol cars outside had already all returned to base.
One of the officers from the crime scene came in, dropped into a desk chair, and started drinking water in big gulps.
He looked deathly pale, his lips trembling. As he drank, more than half the water leaked from the gap between the cup and his mouth, running down onto his uniform.
Anyone could tell something was wrong.
The intern stepped forward and took the keys from his hand.
“They’re short on people over there too. You need to make a trip there as well.”
The officer managed to speak between gulps.
Only after he had drained the entire cup of tea, even swallowing the tea foam mixed in with the water, did his expression ease up a little. But only a little. He was still breathing hard as he looked at the intern very seriously.
“Before you go over there, you need to bring a vomiting bag, and some cooling fruit. Best if you can also bring a bag of ice. In case you can’t take it mentally, it’ll be better to throw up and feel better after.”
By rights, these veterans had seen all kinds of crime scenes. Vomiting and a face this pale were rare.
Wu Xiaojiu got curious and stepped forward to ask, “What exactly happened? Isn’t it just that the head and body don’t match up? How can it be that disgusting?”
Maozi might have been a little out of it too. The vomiting had left him dizzy and disoriented, and he didn’t even bother to identify who was speaking. Whatever he was asked, he answered.
“At first, the report was just like that. I got the notice, and since I was already nearby, I went over to take a look. At the time, the separated parts had actually already been joined halfway. There were already colleagues there telling the villagers to cut the connected parts apart, because the two sides didn’t match at all. You could tell at a glance they weren’t even parts of the same person.”
That didn’t sound like much.
Wu Xiaojiu tilted his head, signaling for him to keep going.
Maozi swallowed and grimaced like a bitter gourd.
“What happened after that went a bit beyond the scope. We told the villagers to stop, but the villagers refused. They insisted on sewing the two parts together, saying that if you split them apart, the dead wouldn’t be able to rest in peace.”
