Chapter 49

It wasn’t hard to understand, really.

Basically, Feng Jiutian had fallen for a woman who always ended up involved with old men, though nobody knew how her brain worked.

Maybe she had grown up lacking motherly love. Seeing the other woman take an old man’s money and use it all to raise a child, she suddenly wanted to make up for that missing maternal affection through her.

In fact, if this woman hadn’t appeared, Feng Jiutian wouldn’t have fallen for Bo Suihan either. The oppression and control of patriarchy she had suffered since childhood had done serious damage. By now, Feng Jiutian could no longer even bear to look at men.

So she put all her energy into helping that woman solve her pain and troubles.

As she put it:

Your pain hurts me too, and I want to help you solve it.

Besides, Feng Jiutian had money to burn.

The two of them could be happy for a lifetime.

After hearing the story, Wu Xiaojiu clicked his tongue in admiration.

But he didn’t stay on the topic for long, because the next second, his watch started ringing.

Messages popped up one after another along with the call. That rhythm was very familiar.

It was obviously Qi Jiao’s handiwork.

He couldn’t hang up on it and couldn’t block it all, so Wu Xiaojiu awkwardly slipped to the back of the private room to answer.

The moment the call connected,

a shout exploded from the other end.

“Wu Xiaojiu, you’re not dead!”

That damn guy. He had explained a hundred times before that he wasn’t dead, and Qi Jiao still refused to believe him. Now he hadn’t even contacted him first, and Qi Jiao was calling him on his own.

Was Qi Jiao out of his mind?

Wu Xiaojiu gave an impatient grunt, but at the same time, he was curious how Qi Jiao had come to that conclusion.

After all, at the East European club, Qi Jiao would rather believe a dog was Wu Xiaojiu than believe he was the real one.

“The heart-rate monitor on your watch. Your heartbeat is a little faster than normal, and your blood pressure is a little higher too. I watched it for an hour and a half. It’s stayed at that level for years, and only after confirming you weren’t faking it did I reach that conclusion.”

What kind of weird fixation was that?

Who just sat there watching someone else’s heartbeat and blood pressure for no reason?

Wu Xiaojiu’s expression twisted. His teeth showed, his brows knotted together, and his eyes and brain worked overtime as he tried to make sense of what Qi Jiao had said.

“Are you with Bo Suihan now? Hurry back to the Wu Family. Your parents thought they were white-haired people burying a black-haired child. They’ve aged overnight, their hair has turned white overnight, and they’ve become so worn down that they’ve handed everything in the family and at work over to your sister!”

Qi Jiao’s voice was clearly anxious.

When Wu Xiaojiu heard that something had happened to the Wu Family, he immediately panicked too.

No wonder there was that saying about a white-haired person sending off a black-haired one. So his mother had been so heartbroken she’d gone white-haired overnight!

After hearing this, Wu Xiaojiu had no mood to stay in Golden Myriad.

He quickly explained the situation to Bo Suihan and was about to rush back to the Wu Family.

But now that Bo Suihan had finally gotten his treasure back, and since he knew exactly who was currently at the Wu Family, he naturally wasn’t willing to let Wu Xiaojiu leave.

He grabbed Wu Xiaojiu’s wrist, tugging hard enough to make the skin on his palm sting.

“Our grievance isn’t settled yet. You haven’t spent a single day with me. You’re not allowed to go.”

“Don’t make trouble. I know I owe you, but something happened at my home. Can you cut me some slack?”

Even now, Wu Xiaojiu was still patient with him.

Bo Suihan took out his phone and glanced at it, then shook his head.

“Wang Xiao’s whereabouts are still unknown. Do you know who he really is? Back then, he deceived us and drove us to kill each other. Until we catch him, you’re not allowed to leave. You’re not going anywhere.”

The mood turned cold in an instant, and the two of them were at odds again.

Wu Xiaojiu always put the Wu Family first, so of course he wouldn’t budge on this.

But Bo Suihan had his own concerns too. After all, he knew more about what was going on, and he wasn’t willing to let Wu Xiaojiu leave either.
The two of them stayed locked in that standoff for a while.

It finally ended when Wu Xiaojiu ignored his wound, yanked his wrist free with force, and slammed the door on his way out.

“You spoil him way too much. The Wu Family is nothing. They live off us. With a flick of your finger, you could wipe out the entire source of income for his whole family.”

Feng Jiutian rested her chin in her hand, watching the scene with great interest.

“Why not try it? Judging from your attitude, you treasure him to death. Why can’t your treasure hurt you a little too?”

Bo Suihan’s expression shifted at that.

But the change was brief, and his face soon returned to its usual blankness.

“Have you handled everything I asked you to check?”

As soon as business was mentioned, Feng Jiutian immediately turned serious. She nodded and took a stack of documents out of her small bag.

“The investigation results are all in here. Also, Wu Yuting has now, because of the bet-agreement threat, been married off to the village chief’s son by Wu Dan.

Because of that, I think it would be unwise to make the findings public. Otherwise, the conflict between Wu Xiaojiu and you will only get worse.”

The contents of the file made Bo Suihan frown deeply. For a long time, he said nothing.

After repeated hesitation, he let out a long sigh and leaned back in his chair with a hand over his face.

“Destroy the documents. Cover up everything from back then as much as possible. He only just came back, and now he’s taking blow after blow. How is he supposed to take it?”

In the end, after hesitating several times, Bo Suihan still chose to lie.

To him, lying did not mean betrayal. It meant protection.

What happened back then would end with those three knives. He did not want to circle around and around only to end up tearing each other apart in the end.

Wu Xiaojiu hailed a taxi.

When he got out, he pawned the top Bo Suihan had bought him and handed it to the driver.

Then he ran back to the Wu Family in a panic, alone.

When he pushed the door open, the Wu Family banquet still hadn’t ended. The whole family was seated neatly around the round table, except the seat that had originally belonged to Wu Xiaojiu was now occupied by a stranger.

In his forties or fifties, yet sitting in a baby chair with a drool bib around his neck, he burst into a tantrum the moment he saw Wu Xiaojiu run in and open the door.

“Bad guy, bad guy! You’re disturbing Tianci’s meal!”

His speech was halting and broken. Anyone could tell at a glance that he was a complete idiot.

Wu Xiaojiu frowned, disbelief flashing across his face as he dropped his hand and stumbled forward quickly.

Only when he got closer did he notice that the man’s eyes were set extremely wide apart, with a tiny nose and tiny mouth. He looked sick in the head.

“Who is he?”

The surroundings fell silent. None of Wu Xiaojiu’s close relatives dared to make a sound.

Wu’s father and mother stared at him, and in an instant, tears came pouring down.

“My son, you’re not dead!”

The old couple tried to get up, but they were utterly exhausted. They hadn’t slept properly for days, and now their emotions were surging all at once, leaving them drained in an instant.

Their legs had gone numb, and no matter how they tried, they couldn’t get up from the chairs.

With reddened eyes, Wu Xiaojiu stared at the two of them, then turned and met Wu Yuting’s gaze. She was already crying so hard her face was streaked with tears.

Actually, by now, he already had a guess about where that fool had come from.

But he didn’t want to believe it.

Even now, he was still deceiving himself, and asked Wu Yuting in a pleading voice:

“Sis, who is he?”

Wu Yuting took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and tears rolled down in large drops.

“Your brother-in-law.”

For a long time, no one said a word. The air was deathly silent.

Qi Jiao hurriedly stood up from his seat and walked over to take Wu Xiaojiu by the hand, bringing him to his side.

By then, the other man was already wrapped in thick emotion, and his body and limbs no longer seemed to belong to him.

He just followed behind Qi Jiao blankly, like a dazed puppet.
