Chapter 95
Chapter 95
By the time Meng Yifan and I woke up, we were already in the hospital, and the sun was already up.
The two of us were lying in adjacent beds, covered in injuries.
Meng Yifan was in slightly better shape than me; after all, he had thicker skin and more meat on his bones.
I, on the other hand, was in a sorry state. My back felt like it was splitting open; every time I moved, I hissed in pain.
“Who brought us here…?” Meng Yifan asked.
I thought back to the long black dress I had seen the night before and said that Du Yuwei had saved us.
Meng Yifan froze for a moment, then sighed with emotion. “To think the one who wanted to kill us at the start ended up saving us… Do you think she fell in love with one of us?”
“You’ve still got the heart to joke at a time like this?” I cursed. “We just got the absolute shit kicked out of us.”
If Du Yuwei hadn’t suddenly appeared last night, we would have been finished. Our corpses would probably be floating somewhere by now.
It would be a lie to say I wasn’t scared. Just thinking about it now made my skin crawl.
Those five men last night were hell-bent on killing us.
They were truly, fucking lawless!
“Weren’t we supposed to do something? I suddenly forgot,” Meng Yifan asked me.
I told him we had to find Song Xiaotian’s father!
It was already morning; Song Xiaotian had probably been arrested by now.
The two of us struggled to get out of our hospital beds, both of us moving like we were crippled.
“That idiot… he gave me the address but didn’t just send his dad’s contact info directly.”
Grumbling under my breath, I leaned on Meng Yifan for support as we prepared to go find Song Xiaotian’s father.
But just as we stepped out of the ward, a nurse arrived.
“What are you two doing? You’re injured this badly, you should be lying in bed resting.”
“Nurse, who brought us to the hospital last night?”
“I don’t know.”
The nurse continued, “I wasn’t on shift last night, but I heard from my colleagues that someone just left you at the hospital entrance. Oh, by the way, you need to go settle your fees first. Once that’s done, get back here and lie down. Don’t go running around.”
Naturally, we intended to run.
After heading downstairs and settling the bill, the two of us left the hospital without even bothering to process a formal discharge.
Meng Yifan’s car was still parked outside the hospital, and the keys were in my pocket.
“Can ghosts drive cars?” Meng Yifan clicked his tongue in wonder.
I recalled the two identical versions of Du Yuwei I had seen the previous night.
I had a feeling there were two of them. One was the real Du Yuwei-the one who had become a ghost.
And the other… she might be a living person.
Unfortunately, I hadn’t seen the faces of both Du Yuweis, so I didn’t know if they looked exactly the same.
It was also possible that the other Du Yuwei was just someone wearing those clothes, pretending to be her.
“Don’t worry about that for now. You can’t drive your car anyway, it’s out of gas. Let’s call a cab.”
We hailed a taxi and set off once more for the address Song Xiaotian had given us.
After about a thirty-minute drive, the taxi dropped us off in front of a teahouse.
Meng Yifan and I supported each other, limping into the teahouse and giving the receptionist quite a fright.
Our faces were covered in bruises and cuts, looking like we had just come out of a massive brawl.
“Don’t be scared, we’re here to find someone.”
I asked the receptionist, “Is there a man named Song Qing here?”
The receptionist blinked. “You mean our boss… Why are you looking for the boss?”
I said urgently, “Hurry and notify your boss. Something has happened to his son, Song Xiaotian. We’re here to get him to save his son.”
Startled, the receptionist quickly said, “The boss is upstairs. I’ll go get him.”
With that, she hurried up the stairs.
In less than a minute, a middle-aged man came rushing down from the upper floor.
This middle-aged man was Song Qing, Song Xiaotian’s father.
I remembered Song Xiaotian saying his father was a veteran.
He had an aura like a triad boss, commanding respect without even trying to look angry.
“And you two are?”
“We’re friends of Brother Tian,”
I said hurriedly, “He’s been arrested by the police and told us to come find you.”
Uncle Song’s face darkened. He didn’t say much for the moment, instead leading us upstairs to his office.
Once inside, he closed the door before asking, “What exactly happened? Tell me everything in detail.”
I quickly explained the situation regarding Song Xiaotian’s undercover work, though I held back on the details concerning Du Ruhai for the time being.
After listening, his expression grew even more grim.
“Uncle, Brother Tian won’t actually go to prison, will he…?” Meng Yifan and I asked, worried.
Uncle Song knit his brows and said, “My son isn’t the type to help a villain. If anyone dares to frame him and throw him in jail, I’ll personally see them dead!”
That chilling tone stunned both Meng Yifan and me.
Like father, like son-the way they spoke was identical, both possessing the same arrogant edge.
“Rest for a moment. I’m going to make a call.”
With that, he took his phone and left the office.
The call lasted nearly an hour.
The longer it took, the more Meng Yifan and I worried that the situation was going to be difficult to resolve.
When he finally returned, Uncle Song said to us, “Don’t worry too much. We’ll get him out. The Song Family doesn’t play by their rules. Two days at most, and they’ll have to release him obediently.”
Meng Yifan and I breathed a sigh of relief.
Though we didn’t know the full extent of Song Xiaotian’s family background, anyone who could raise someone as capable as him had to be extraordinary.
Given Uncle Song’s confidence, we should be seeing Song Xiaotian within a couple of days.
“The fact that Xiaotian contacted you two instead of me the moment things went south shows he trusts you deeply. I assume you’re very close?” Uncle Song asked.
I nodded. “I saw you at Fang Man’s funeral. You left shortly after arriving, so you probably don’t remember me. I was Fang Man’s boyfriend.”
Uncle Song paused, then slapped his forehead. “I remember now. You’re Chen Mo?”
I nodded.
He sighed, looking apologetic. “I’m sorry. I had an urgent matter to handle that day, so I had Xiaotian’s mother stay behind instead.”
I told him it was fine.
“By the way, how did you two end up looking like this? Did you offend someone?” Uncle Song asked, noticing our bruised and swollen faces with surprise.
I nodded and told him we had crossed Du Ruhai, and that we were nearly thrown into the river last night.
“Du Ruhai?” Uncle Song’s expression shifted slightly. “The CEO of Weihai Group?”
I nodded again.
He fell into thought for a moment, then looked at us. “I heard Xiaotian say before that Xiaoman’s death wasn’t an accident. But when I asked him, he refused to go into detail. Does Xiaoman’s death have something to do with Du Ruhai? How exactly did you offend him?”
I didn’t know how to explain it to him; the story was far too complicated.
Seeing my silence, he seemed to understand my reluctance. “If it’s inconvenient to say, I won’t force you. But if you’ve offended Du Ruhai, you won’t be able to survive in Lanjiang City anymore.”
I thought to myself that it was more than just ‘not surviving.’ If Song Xiaotian wasn’t around, Meng Yifan and I wouldn’t even be able to keep our lives.
“Uncle, it’s not that I don’t want to tell you, it’s just that this matter is a bit complicated.”
I stood up to take my leave. “We need to go investigate something now. It’s related to Xiaoman’s death.”
