Chapter 86
Chapter 86
The biggest regret of my life is that after being betrayed by Old Zhao Seven once, I actually trusted him a second time!
There was no such thing as evidence to prove Du Ruhai was Lv Zhengxian. It was all a lie fabricated by Old Zhao Seven!
“Old Zhao Seven, you’re going to die a miserable death!”
“You’d better watch out, karma’s going to get you!”
Meng Yifan and I were so furious we started hurling curses.
But the old man acted as if he had no shame at all. He stood beside Du Ruhai with his hands behind his back, showing not a hint of guilt.
“You boys… the Seventh Master is old enough to be your father, yet you speak so maliciously to an elder.”
Du Ruhai shook his head and sighed. “The Seventh Master and I are close friends; I treat him as an honored guest. I truly don’t understand why you always think he would help you move against me. What were you thinking?”
Having said that, he looked at Old Zhao Seven beside him and smiled. “Seventh Master, surely there isn’t some deep-seated hatred between us?”
The corners of Old Zhao Seven’s mouth curled up as he looked at us mockingly. “No past grievances, no recent grudges. We all wander through life just to scramble for a few pieces of silver. It’s better to talk about interests than to talk about good and evil.”
Du Ruhai laughed loudly. “Did you hear that? The Seventh Master is a man of great wisdom. He has already revealed the truth of life to you. Pay attention-maybe you can use it in your next life.”
My heart skipped a beat.
He was planning to kill us!
It made sense. Aside from us, no one else probably dared to provoke Du Ruhai like this. We had already crossed him once, and now that we’d delivered ourselves to his doorstep a second time, there was no way he would let us go.
“President Du, you need to open your eyes! Our opposition to you is out in the open, but that old man beside you is stabbing you in the back!”
At this point, Meng Yifan couldn’t resist trying to drag Old Zhao Seven down with us. “This old fossil swapped out your son’s ashes a long time ago! You probably don’t even know, but the ashes we stole weren’t your son’s at all!”
When he said that, both Song Xiaotian and I turned pale with fright.
God damn it!
The man was already planning to deal with us, and now this? We were probably going to wish we were dead.
“So, the people who desecrated the grave the night before last were the three of you. You’re admitting it now?”
Du Ruhai suddenly flew into a rage, slamming his wine glass down until it shattered. “You would even disturb the deceased? He was just a child, and you wouldn’t even let his ashes rest in peace? You animals!”
Meng Yifan froze, turning to look at us. “Did I… say something wrong?”
Song Xiaotian glared at him. “You idiot!”
Even I was speechless. What a pig of a teammate! I always felt that Meng Yifan possessed a certain kind of ‘pure’ stupidity.
However, since he had already confessed, we had to drag Old Zhao Seven down with us.
“Yes, we went to the cemetery.”
“But Meng Yifan isn’t lying. The ashes we dug up weren’t Du Mingyang’s at all. Old Zhao Seven swapped Du Mingyang’s ashes before the burial!”
I pointed at Old Zhao Seven, gritting my teeth in hatred. “He didn’t just screw us over; he screwed you over too!”
Du Ruhai’s face remained dark, and he didn’t speak.
Old Zhao Seven actually started laughing. “Fine, so you want to take me down with you? Before we got here, who was it that said if I dared to play any tricks, they’d drag me down and we’d all die together?”
“If what you’re saying were true, then I would be an enemy of President Du. If that were the case, I would have the same goal as you. Why would I bother tricking you into coming here?”
He then turned to Du Ruhai. “President Du, the ashes are in their car. You can send someone to catch the thieves with the loot. Furthermore, you should investigate thoroughly so you won’t have any reason to doubt me in the future.”
Du Ruhai raised a hand to interrupt him. “What are you saying, Seventh Master? There’s no need for you to explain. If I believed their words, wouldn’t that make me just as foolish as they are?”
I was stunned.
Talk about a smear campaign-this guy was throwing mud so thick it was practically cement. Old Zhao Seven didn’t even blink as he lied; his story was airtight, covering every angle.
The most fatal blow was that we actually had Du Mingyang’s ashes with us. They were sitting in our car right now. We were caught red-handed with no way to explain ourselves.
“Go, go, go! Get them!”
Du Ruhai pointed at the three of us. “Search them, take their car keys, and then drag them out to be fed to the dogs.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, a swarm of bodyguards surged forward.
Meng Yifan and I were essentially window dressing; we didn’t stand a chance against these guys. Without Song Xiaotian’s protection, we would be taken out in seconds.
Even with Song Xiaotian here, I feared he was hopelessly outnumbered.
However, I had underestimated Song Xiaotian’s sheer ferocity. Even while surrounded, his face remained devoid of fear. Two short batons snapped out from his hands, which he clicked together into a single staff. He stepped forward, brandishing the weapon with a thunderous roar: “Back the hell off! Anyone who steps up dies!”
As he spoke, he moved with lightning speed. I didn’t even see how he did it, but two men were swept off their feet instantly. The display of force actually managed to intimidate the rest of the bodyguards into a standstill.
Du Ruhai narrowed his eyes and took a deep breath. “You’ve got guts, kid. Impressive. I’d like to see just how far that talent of yours goes.”
The moment he finished speaking, several more doors swung open. An endless stream of bodyguards poured out.
By my count, there were at least fifty of them. Even Song Xiaotian’s expression shifted.
Meng Yifan and I were beyond despair.
Dammit, who does this guy think he is, an emperor? Why does he have so many people protecting him! It felt like we were destined to die here today.
Just then, another man walked out of the room Du Ruhai had been in.
This man had a sinister aura, wore a thumb ring, and carried himself with undeniable presence. He let out a loud laugh as he emerged. “President Du, it’s a first for me to see someone causing trouble on your turf. Let me see who’s so brave…”
Before he could finish his sentence, his gaze locked onto Song Xiaotian, and his face instantly changed.
Song Xiaotian looked equally shocked to see him.
“Song Xiaotian!”
The man gasped in disbelief. “What the hell are you doing here?”
Du Ruhai looked at the man, his curiosity piqued. “Zhifeng, you two know each other?”
The man swallowed hard, cold sweat breaking out on his forehead. “President Du… he’s my sworn brother…”
Du Ruhai froze at those words, and so did I.
Song Xiaotian’s sworn brother? That meant he was the behind-the-scenes owner of that bar.
Lin Zhifeng…
I had heard that name before. He was the underground kingpin of Lanjiang City.
I never expected him to be one of Du Ruhai’s men.
“Oh? Well, isn’t that a coincidence? Talk about friendly fire,” Du Ruhai said, his gaze lingering meaningfully on Lin Zhifeng. “He wasn’t sent here by you, was he?”
That single sentence made Lin Zhifeng’s face turn several shades paler. “No, no, absolutely not! I have no idea what this kid gets up to every day.”
He turned and glared fiercely at Song Xiaotian. “You brat, you never do anything productive! How dare you provoke President Du? Are you trying to get me killed?! Get over here right now and apologize to President Du, or you’re dead meat today! Even I won’t be able to protect you!”
Song Xiaotian remained silent, but I could see the conflict in his eyes.
Since they were sworn brothers, his relationship with Lin Zhifeng had to be deep.
Meng Yifan looked completely shell-shocked, clearly terrified that Song Xiaotian might abandon us. If Song Xiaotian was taken away by Lin Zhifeng, the two of us were definitely finished.
