Chapter 169
Chapter 169
Du Yunting hacked Xiang Kai to death on the spot.
After the deed was done, Du Yunting stood there holding the blade, quietly gazing at Xiang Kai’s corpse.
That smile still hung on his face-a smile so twisted it defied logic.
My fear had already surpassed my shock.
I wasn’t terrified by the gore itself; having experienced so many life-and-death situations, a scene like this couldn’t rattle me. What terrified me was Du Yunting’s smile, his mannerisms, his aura, and the words he had uttered just before he killed Xiang Kai.
I saw that man’s shadow in him!
He had even admitted it himself-he was that man!
Du Ruhai, that insane and dangerous man, really wasn’t dead!
He was still alive!
He had simply switched to a new body!
He wasn’t going by Du Ruhai anymore; he was Du Yunting!
Seeing Xiang Kai hacked to death in the living room, Tao Xiaoyu was shaking so violently she had to clap her hands over her mouth to keep from screaming.
I knew she was next.
But before I could witness her death at Du Yunting’s hands, I suddenly felt someone slapping my face and calling my name.
I was quickly jolted awake.
As soon as I opened my eyes, I saw Song Xiaotian and Seventh Master hovering over me, their faces etched with worry.
“He’s awake! He’s coming to!”
“Are you okay?”
I took a few seconds to steady myself before crawling up from the floor. The fear in my heart refused to dissipate. “I saw it…”
Song Xiaotian asked urgently, “What did you see?”
I told them I had seen the killer who murdered Xiang Kai and Tao Xiaoyu.
“Who was it?” Song Xiaotian and Seventh Master’s eyes widened simultaneously.
I looked at them and spoke the name with a trembling voice. “It was Du Ruhai…”
Hearing that name again, Song Xiaotian and Seventh Master were no less shocked than I had been.
“What are you talking about?”
“Du Ruhai?”
“Didn’t he die a long time ago?”
I told them that he had indeed died.
But he had been reborn!
“I don’t know what method he used, but his soul transferred into Du Yunting’s body. Du Yunting is his nephew, and now he has completely taken over the physical shell. He’s the one who killed Xiang Kai.”
I described the scene I had just witnessed in vivid detail.
Song Xiaotian slumped onto the floor, while Seventh Master’s brow furrowed, his expression becoming incredibly solemn.
“Let’s… let’s get Xiao Qing to the hospital first. We’ll talk about this later.”
Only then did I realize Xiao Qing had passed out.
Song Xiaotian explained that I had been knocked unconscious when Xiao Qing collided with me earlier. Seventh Master had no choice but to subdue her and drive Tao Xiaoyu’s Ghost out of her body.
However, Xiao Qing’s body was too weak. She had coughed up several mouthfuls of blood and hadn’t woken up since.
We hurriedly cleaned up the scene and carried Xiao Qing out of the villa on our backs.
Once out of the residential area, we rushed her to the hospital in the car.
Upon arrival, Xiao Qing was wheeled into the emergency room.
Fortunately, she woke up soon after. Unfortunately, the doctor issued a critical condition notice.
I was stunned when I saw the notice. Xiao Qing was suffering from Stage 4 heart failure and was at risk of cardiogenic shock at any moment.
Heart failure is categorized into four stages, and she was currently at the most severe level.
We immediately asked Xiao Qing for her family’s contact information, but she refused to give it. She wouldn’t let us tell her family and insisted on signing the critical condition notice herself.
“Xiao Qing, your illness has reached this point, and you’re still going to keep it from your family?” Seventh Master said, his voice tinged with anger.
Xiao Qing remained remarkably calm. Though her face was as white as paper, she still shook her head at Seventh Master. “Don’t tell them. My child is still young, and my parents are ill. I’m afraid they won’t be able to handle it.”
After speaking, Xiao Qing looked at me with an apologetic expression. “I’m sorry. I don’t know if you’ve finished your business. If not, I’ll refund your money first.”
I quickly told her that everything was finished and there was no need for a refund.
“Master Xiao Qing, you’re in this state, and you’re still keeping it from your family?”
“You’re a woman-why take all this on yourself? Where’s your husband?”
I felt this woman’s life was far too bitter. When others are terminally ill, they stay home to be cared for and cherished by their families. Yet here she was, desperately trading her remaining lifespan to save up money for her loved ones.
She said, “My husband works very hard too. He has to take care of the elderly and the child while also earning money outside. We’re poor; there’s no other way.”
I sighed, not knowing what else to say.
Seventh Master reached out, pulled back her sleeve, and placed two fingers on her pulse.
After a moment, Seventh Master’s expression grew even more solemn. He said to Xiao Qing, “You have about a month left.”
Xiao Qing’s eyes couldn’t help but redden as she nodded. “I’ve been mentally prepared for a long time. Seventh Master, I’d like to rest for a while.”
We stopped disturbing her and stepped out of the ward, taking a seat in the corridor.
“When dawn breaks, we should still call her husband. Being this sick, if she suffers sudden cardiogenic shock, she might not even last the month.” Seventh Master shook his head, his mood heavy.
Only then did I realize why Seventh Master’s expression had been so grim when Tao Xiaoyu’s Ghost was summoned earlier.
Because those close to death find it easier to draw spirits to them. Seventh Master had known then that Xiao Qing’s days were numbered.
The atmosphere became stiflingly heavy.
After a long silence, Song Xiaotian spoke up to break the tension. “What do we do about Meng Yifan now? If Du Yunting is the killer, there is a two-hundred-percent chance the police won’t name him as the culprit. When the time comes, Meng Yifan will be forced to take the fall.”
“We know who the killer is now, but knowing is the same as not knowing.”
I felt even more oppressed. “Can the wealthy really do whatever they want? If we find evidence to prove he committed the murder, can we really not get him convicted?”
Song Xiaotian gave a bitter laugh. “Money doesn’t necessarily let you do whatever you want, but money can decide the fate of those who have less of it. That’s reality.”
“Think about it. Du Yunting must have entered through the main entrance. The surveillance cameras definitely caught him. Since the police have seen the footage, it’s impossible for them not to know he went to Tao Xiaoyu’s home.”
“If that’s the case, why did the police still label Meng Yifan as the prime suspect?”
“One man was seen going in, and the other wasn’t even captured on camera entering the building, yet the latter became the murderer.”
My heart went cold.
This was so damn ironic.
Our only chance to save Meng Yifan was to prove that someone else was the killer.
But now, even if we could prove someone else did it, we still couldn’t save Meng Yifan.
Because the killer was Du Yunting, a member of the Du Family and the chairman of the Weihai Group.
“More importantly, Du Yunting wore gloves when he committed the murder. There definitely won’t be any fingerprints on the murder weapon.”
Song Xiaotian continued, “If Du Yunting is actually Du Ruhai now, given Du Ruhai’s shrewdness, he likely didn’t leave any fingerprints before the killing either. We simply can’t find any concrete evidence to prove he’s the one who did it.”
