Chapter 157
Chapter 157
Over the next half month or so, things settled into a routine.
I continued working during the day, and in the evenings, I frequently visited Seventh Master to listen to him lecture on the Dao. I had been reading that book constantly and found that I could actually understand a great deal of it. However, I was essentially a latecomer to this path, having been a staunch atheist before all this, so it was impossible for me to grasp everything on my own.
But Seventh Master was incredibly knowledgeable. I felt that even university professors might not know as much as he did.
In just two short weeks, I discovered that he was proficient in everything from astronomy and geography to geology, philosophy, and literature. That wasn’t even mentioning the Five Arts of Metaphysics-there seemed to be nothing he didn’t understand.
I learned a great deal from him. With his guidance, I slowly began to comprehend the parts of the book that had previously baffled me.
Beyond that, his home was filled with books, many of which were no longer available on the market. My mindset began to shift; I started to let go of many things and began to re-evaluate life, pondering its true meaning.
However, there was one person I still couldn’t stop thinking about.
That person was Anning.
Perhaps it was because she shared the exact same face as Du Yuwei. Or perhaps it was because of Du Yuwei that I cared so much about her well-being; after all, she was Du Yuwei’s sister.
Seventh Master had told me a couple of days ago that Anning grew up in an orphanage without the love of a father or mother. In that environment, she never received a proper education. She had been stealing since she was a child, a vice that had led to her being frequently detained by the police. Despite being only in her early twenties, she was already a regular at various detention centers.
If she continued down this path, she would eventually end up in prison. I didn’t think Du Yuwei would want to see her like that, so I wanted to find her and see if there was any way I could help.
But I couldn’t find her. There was no trace of her anywhere.
Besides Anning, there was someone else I was worried about: Du Yuwei’s child. Du Yuwei was gone, but the child remained. With no one to look after him, I had no idea where he was or what he was doing. I was afraid he might hurt people, and if he were caught by some folk master, he would be finished.
I couldn’t find him either, so I had to ask Seventh Master for help. Seventh Master reached out to his circle of friends, asking them to keep an eye out for Du Yuwei’s child. We didn’t know if the child was with Anning or if they had already left the city.
Aside from these concerns, there was one more thing that kept me uneasy.
And that was Du Ruhai.
Du Ruhai was dead; he was definitely dead. That night on the rooftop, I had bitten him to death with my own teeth. He was completely gone at the time.
However, when I later asked Meng Yifan, he said that when he and Uncle Song arrived at the rooftop, they didn’t see Du Ruhai’s body at all.
A dead man’s body couldn’t have just run off on its own, could it?
At the time, Meng Yifan and Uncle Song were preoccupied with getting us to the hospital, so they hadn’t searched the area thoroughly. I was worried about whether Du Ruhai was truly dead. We had paid such a high price; if that man wasn’t dead, it would be utterly devastating.
But Seventh Master said that if I had bitten him to death on the spot, then Du Ruhai was certainly dead. Once his spirit was gone, his original physical body would die as well. There was no way for Du Ruhai to live again.
Seventh Master’s words put me somewhat at ease. Moreover, more than a month had passed since the incident, and indeed, nothing had happened in the meantime.
The death of Du Ruhai inevitably sent shockwaves through all of Lanjiang City. The sudden fall of such a prominent figure was bound to cause a sensation and spark endless speculation.
However, the Du Family publicly claimed that Du Ruhai had died of sudden illness brought on by overwork.
After his passing, the Du Family’s assets were taken over by his nephew, Du Yunting. It was said that Du Yunting was already the CEO of Weihai Group, elected by the board of directors and a young man who had Du Ruhai’s personal seal of approval.
Furthermore, according to inheritance laws, Du Ruhai had no legal wife or children, and his biological parents had long since passed away. According to the order of succession, his second-order heir was his brother-Du Yunting’s father.
Since his brother was Du Yunting’s father, the two were essentially one family. It didn’t really matter who technically inherited the estate; with such a massive family business, it was only natural to hand the reins to the younger, capable Du Yunting.
But that wasn’t what concerned me. What I found curious was that since Weihai Group had already been hollowed out by the people from The Organization, they should have been looking for a way to seize control now that Du Ruhai was dead. Why would they just let the Du Family take over?
Word was that Du Yunting wasn’t some spoiled playboy but an extremely talented individual. He was young and ambitious; now that he had taken over Weihai Group, there was no way he would just stand by and let outsiders stick their hands into his family’s business, right?
As much as I couldn’t figure it out, and as curious as I was, it had nothing to do with me.
As long as Du Ruhai was dead, everything was fine as far as I was concerned.
I hoped that after his death, he would go straight to hell and never be reincarnated.
During this period, Meng Yifan and Song Xiaotian were also extremely concerned about me.
Perhaps because what I had gone through was so tragic, they were afraid I might do something drastic. They practically took turns watching over me twenty-four hours a day.
Song Xiaotian even moved directly into my rental apartment, fearing I might try to jump off a bridge again like last time.
Then came this day.
Song Xiaotian and I were out running business errands, and a client treated us to dinner that evening.
This client was the young man who had previously bought Huang Haiquan’s house.
He was a pretty decent guy; he’d said he would treat us to a meal, and he actually remembered more than a month later.
After dinner, our group headed down from the second-floor private room. As we passed through the first floor, I saw a man and a woman on a date. The woman was young, fashionably dressed, and had a pretty face.
I froze for a moment, and then a surge of fury rushed straight to my heart.
I forced myself to endure it while Song Xiaotian and I saw the young man to his car. Once he was gone, I pulled Song Xiaotian back into the restaurant.
“What are you doing? He already paid the bill,” Song Xiaotian said.
I told him it wasn’t about the bill. I dragged him to a corner and pointed at the young woman. “You haven’t seen Meng Yifan’s girlfriend, have you? That’s her.”
Song Xiaotian looked in the direction I was pointing. He didn’t process it at first and smiled. “Oh, what a coincidence. Let’s go over and say hello. I have to say, his lady is quite…”
Before he could finish, Song Xiaotian froze too.
Meng Yifan’s girlfriend, Tao Xiaoyu, was currently on a date with another man. A large bouquet of roses sat beside them; there was no doubt the man had given them to her.
Looking at Tao Xiaoyu, her face was flushed with delight, showing not the slightest hint of rejection.
She was cheating!
Damn it!
Meng Yifan was being cuckolded!
