Chapter 91
Chapter 91
Tianxing Amusement Park closed at nine o’clock in the evening.
It was now ten-fifty, only ten minutes away from the Zi Hour.
There were security guards at the main gate, so they definitely wouldn’t let me in. My only option was to climb over the wall.
The last time I had come here was two months ago. Fang Man was still around back then, and we had come together.
Despite being an adult, I had always liked places like this; I enjoyed the lively atmosphere. But now that Fang Man was gone, these places felt somewhat dull and tasteless to me.
What was once a bustling location now felt tinged with a hint of desolation.
I suddenly froze in my tracks.
Ever since I entered, it felt as though my negative emotions were being magnified. No matter how lively a place is, there is always a time for the crowds to disperse. But when the sun rises tomorrow, this place will be bustling again. Why should it feel desolate?
I’m afraid the only thing truly desolate was my own heart.
Walking through the empty amusement park, the various rides and attractions had long since stopped running. I wandered aimlessly until the Zi Hour finally arrived.
I didn’t understand Du Yuwei’s purpose in asking me to meet here, or who she wanted me to see. I had arrived, yet I hadn’t seen a soul.
By now, I had walked through most of the park. Ahead of me seemed to be the area with the swings.
From a distance, I saw a woman dressed in a red bridal gown. She was holding an infant only a few months old, sitting on a swing. Both of them were seated there, and though no one was pushing them, the swing continued to sway back and forth.
I swallowed hard. My instinct was to pretend I hadn’t seen anything and turn around to leave.
But before I could retreat, a familiar voice came from behind me.
“Don’t go.”
I froze instantly, not daring to take another step.
It was Du Yuwei!
Only she would be wearing a red bridal gown. And that infant was her child.
She had already seen me, and she told me not to go. Strangely, her tone didn’t sound like a command; it sounded more like… she didn’t want me to leave.
I felt that Du Yuwei was acting out of character, completely different from when I had seen her before. I wondered if perhaps having her child with her now had a healing effect on her.
I summoned my courage, intending to turn around and face her. But the moment I turned, I found her standing right behind me.
A person can’t handle being startled, let alone being startled by a ghost. I let out a sharp cry and fell back onto my buttocks, staring at her in terror.
Now that I could see her clearly, she no longer had that deathly face. She looked like a living person, with a faint smile playing on her lips. Even the infant in her arms was smiling at me.
“I’m sorry for scaring you.”
She spoke. I hadn’t expected her to actually apologize to me.
I began to stammer, “N-no, it’s fine… Do you need something? If there’s something, just say it…”
She shook her head. “I just wanted to see you.”
I said, “You’ve seen me now. Can I go…”
She seemed somewhat lonely as she asked, “Are you very afraid of me?”
I nodded, then shook my head, then nodded again.
“I won’t hurt you. You don’t need to fear me.” She spoke earnestly, trying to dispel my terror.
At that moment, the infant in her arms kept smiling at me, even reaching out his tiny hands toward me. The baby was wearing a traditional bellyband, looking just like any ordinary infant-cute, fair, and chubby.
But he was also a ghost… How could I dare to hold him?
“Don’t worry, he won’t hurt you either.”
Du Yuwei seemed to see through my hesitation. She said, “You allowed us, mother and son, to be reunited. He recognizes you. If you don’t hold him, he will be sad.”
I mustered my courage and took the child into my arms.
There wasn’t a trace of warmth in his body; it was like holding a cold corpse. But other than that, he truly felt no different from a normal baby.
He stroked my hair and giggled again. To be honest, he was quite adorable, and his appearance actually dispelled most of the discomfort and fear in my heart.
An involuntary smile crept onto my face as well.
Such a tiny infant, so cute. It felt somewhat miraculous to think that if he were still alive and had grown up, he would be the same age as me.
But unfortunately, he had died before he was even born.
“Do you know why I asked you to meet me here?” Du Yuwei suddenly asked.
I shook my head.
She said, “I remember when I was little, my parents used to take me to amusement parks all the time. My older brother would be with us back then. There was a Tianxing Amusement Park in our hometown, too.”
“But ever since they died… I haven’t been to a place like this again.”
I realized that the last time she visited one must have been fifteen years ago.
It turned out she was just missing her family.
“Back then, my favorite thing was riding the Ferris wheel because you could see the whole city from the top.”
“Can you go on the Ferris wheel with me?”
I nodded. Holding the child in my arms, I followed her to the base of the Ferris wheel.
However, the power to the entire park had been cut. Naturally, the Ferris wheel had no power, and without power, it couldn’t run.
I stupidly blurted out, “Maybe we should come back during the day…”
I regretted it as soon as the words left my mouth.
She couldn’t come during the day.
By now, we were already sitting inside one of the carriages. Du Yuwei smiled faintly. “You forgot, I’m a Ghost.”
As she spoke, the Ferris wheel-which should have been dead-suddenly began to move out of thin air, slowly ascending into the sky.
It felt like a dream. Here I was, instead of sleeping in the middle of the night, running around an amusement park and riding a Ferris wheel with two ghosts. It was something I never would have dared to imagine before.
As the wheel began to turn, the child grew excited as well. Perhaps everything in this world was a source of curiosity to him.
Then, Du Yuwei, sitting across from me, suddenly asked a question.
“Do you hate me?”
I froze.
If it had been before, I certainly wouldn’t have dared to tell the truth.
But now, knowing she wouldn’t harm me, my heart had settled into a state of calm.
“Yes, I do.”
I didn’t mince words. “I don’t just hate you. I hate Li Xiumei, Du Ruhai, and the people who killed Fang Man. If it weren’t for all of you, my girlfriend wouldn’t be dead.”
Du Yuwei looked at me. “But from beginning to end, there has only been one culprit. He is the one who triggered all these tragedies.”
“Are you referring to Du Ruhai? Or Lv Zhengxian?” I asked.
She shook her head. “Even though I hate that man and want nothing more than to tear him limb from limb, he isn’t actually the true culprit. He was just an accomplice.”
I reacted instantly. “You mean the person who hired Lv Zhengxian all those years ago? But with all due respect, that’s your business. I was innocent, and Fang Man was innocent. You and Li Xiumei dragged me into this, and because of that, I dragged Fang Man into it.”
“Without you, I would have proposed to Fang Man next year. We would have had a beautiful future.”
“Now everything is ruined. My life is ruined. I’ve offended Du Ruhai, and I’ll never be able to take him down. One day, I’ll end up dying at his hands.”
As I spoke, my emotions started to get the better of me.
If I weren’t so afraid of her, I would have been even more worked up.
To my surprise, Du Yuwei remained very calm. She didn’t seem to feel the slightest bit of guilt.
“You’re wrong. You weren’t ‘dragged in’ by me.”
“Our fates were always the same.”
She spoke in riddles.
I stared at her blankly, unable to understand what she meant.
