Chapter 94
Chapter 94
“Chen Mo, the hand covering Lanjiang City is just too big.”
“My master is currently under investigation. They’re claiming I was in league with Lin Zhifeng because I held a fifty-percent stake in his bar. I can’t explain my way out of this right now. Go find my father and tell him to come save me.”
This was the text message Song Xiaotian sent me, followed by an address.
Reading the message, I was so terrified I didn’t know what to do.
Song Xiaotian was the one who submitted the evidence of Lin Zhifeng’s crimes. If he were in league with Lin Zhifeng, why on earth would he betray him?
What were those people at the top thinking, actually arresting Song Xiaotian too?
I was about to call him back, but before I could dial the number, Song Xiaotian sent another message.
“I still haven’t been able to find out who killed Xiaoman, but I have one lead: that motorcycle he gave you. I traced the owner of that bike to the Rongda Electronics Factory. His name is Wang Hua. He already filed a police report saying his motorcycle was stolen. Follow this lead.”
“In case I don’t make it out, if you find out who that person is, don’t be impulsive. Go talk to my father.”
Seeing the contents of the second message, I was shaken once again.
Rongda Electronics Factory… wasn’t that the factory owned by my father’s friend?
My father worked there as an accountant!
I couldn’t think straight anymore. I hurriedly called Song Xiaotian, wanting to ask about his situation.
But when I dialed, his phone was already turned off.
I stood up immediately and apologized to my friends.
“I’m so sorry, something’s come up with a friend. I have to go right away. Let’s get together another time.”
With that, I left the restaurant.
As soon as I stepped out, I called Meng Yifan and told him to drive over and pick me up.
“Where’s your car? What’s the rush?”
“Song Xiaotian is going to prison!”
“What?!”
In less than twenty minutes, Meng Yifan arrived in his car.
After getting in, I gave him the address Song Xiaotian had sent and told him to drive there immediately.
“What exactly happened? How is he going to prison?” Meng Yifan asked for details as we drove.
I showed him the text messages. After reading them, his expression turned grim.
“Holy shit, are they crazy? On what grounds are they just snatching people up!”
“This is fucking ‘killing the cook after the meal is served.’ If they keep this up, who’s going to go undercover in the future? Do they even treat undercover agents like human beings?!”
I sighed. These matters were beyond the reach of ordinary civilians like us.
But there was no doubt that this society was even darker than we commoners imagined.
Any sane person wouldn’t lump the whistleblower together with the person being reported.
Unless that person was actually on the same side as the criminal.
It was lucky that Song Xiaotian and his Master’s undercover operation had been a private endeavor. Otherwise, Song Xiaotian would have been sold out long ago while he was still undercover.
“Chen Mo, there’s a car that’s been following us for a while,” Meng Yifan suddenly said, turning to me.
I jumped and looked in the rearview mirror. Sure enough, there was a car trailing us; I hadn’t noticed it until now.
I asked Meng Yifan how long it had been there.
“About twenty minutes. It’s probably someone sent by Du Ruhai.”
“He knows Song Xiaotian is being arrested and that no one is protecting us anymore.”
Panic set in for both of us.
If it hadn’t been for Song Xiaotian during this period, the two of us would have died several times over.
Now that even Song Xiaotian had fallen, we were immediately being targeted.
That car behind us was likely full of people arranged by Du Ruhai.
“What do we do?” Meng Yifan asked.
I thought about it for a moment and told him to take a different route, trying our best to lose the car behind us.
Meng Yifan immediately jerked the steering wheel, veering into a side road.
The car followed us again. Realizing we were trying to escape, they pursued us relentlessly, attempting to overtake and cut us off.
Meng Yifan was so terrified he nearly floored the accelerator. He didn’t care about the roadside surveillance cameras anymore; his only thought was to shake off the car behind us.
We were chased for about half an hour, leading us far away from the address Song Xiaotian had given us.
The car drove straight into the suburbs. Just as we were passing a river, Meng Yifan’s car ran out of gas.
“When was the last time you filled up?” I asked him.
“Go to hell!”
In no time at all, we were overtaken.
The other car pulled right in front of us, blocking our path.
There was no point in trying to drive any further in Meng Yifan’s car; we couldn’t outrun them anyway.
“Get out! Jump in the river!”
We both pulled our doors open at the same time. Meng Yifan didn’t even care about his car anymore.
Luckily there was a river here, and luckily we both knew how to swim.
But the people from the other car also rushed out. Five burly men covered in tattoos, wielding steel pipes, caught up to us.
I took a direct hit to my back from a steel pipe. Immediately after, several more pipes rained down on my back and head. I was quickly beaten to the ground, my head covered in blood.
Meng Yifan had already climbed onto the railing to jump into the river, but seeing me get knocked down, he turned back.
These people clearly weren’t professional bodyguards; Meng Yifan actually managed to take one of them down quickly.
However, Meng Yifan was outnumbered, and the men were armed. He was soon beaten to the ground as well.
While these five weren’t professional bodyguards, they were definitely thugs. Fearing we might resist again, they surrounded us and began a brutal assault.
Only one thought filled my mind: this time, we were truly finished.
Song Xiaotian had just gotten into trouble, and now Meng Yifan and I were going to die.
When Song Xiaotian finally got out, he would only be able to visit our graves.
Meng Yifan and I kept our heads shielded, but we couldn’t hold out for long. We were soon beaten into a state resembling two dead dogs.
Suddenly, the five men stopped. They began discussing throwing us into the river.
Meng Yifan and I could swim, but in the state we were in, being thrown into the river was a death sentence.
Just then, I heard the roar of a motorcycle engine.
After a moment, I clearly felt myself being lifted up.
Then, another sound drifted over-the clicking of high heels.
There were no other vehicles passing by, and it was incredibly quiet. The sound of the high heels was very sharp, and it seemed to be approaching us.
The people carrying me suddenly stopped and shouted a warning:
“Beat it! You looking to die?”
“Don’t you fucking meddle in this!”
As soon as the five men finished shouting, they suddenly dropped me back down.
I tried desperately to open my eyes to see who had arrived, but I couldn’t. The moment I tried, my vision was blurred by blood.
I could only vaguely see a woman wearing a long black dress and red high heels.
I couldn’t see her face, but in my heart, I already knew who it was.
The five attackers suddenly went silent, as if they had been struck mute. They all turned at once and walked toward the railing.
Soon, I heard the sound of splashing. It seemed all five of them had jumped into the river.
I don’t know if it was because I had been beaten too hard and was seeing double, or if I was hallucinating, but I actually saw two women in long black dresses standing side by side. Even the nail polish on their toes peeking out from their high heels was the same-jet black.
Soon, I couldn’t hold on any longer and blacked out.
