Chapter 92
Chapter 92
Du Yuwei’s words left me feeling utterly bewildered.
I asked her what she meant by that, but she didn’t elaborate.
Still, I thought to myself that our fates were fundamentally different. Her family had been murdered when she was a child, and she had been claimed by Lv Zhengxian. She was tragic, a figure of pity-that was an objective fact.
In contrast, while I didn’t grow up in a complete family because my mother abandoned me when I was very young, I had a good father and a grandfather who doted on me. Compared to her, my lot in life had been much better.
But now, after everything I’d been through, I felt pretty miserable myself.
“You said that if I helped you find your child, you’d tell me who really killed Fang Man,”
I asked impatiently, “Can you tell me who that person is now?”
Du Yuwei replied, “It’s the same person who hired Lv Zhengxian and Li Xiumei to murder my family all those years ago.”
I told her I already knew that; I had seen it in the diary.
“I want to know that person’s identity. I want to know who he is.”
“You don’t want to know who he is.”
Du Yuwei countered, “Some answers are cruel. Knowing them won’t do you any good.”
I shook my head. “Nothing is more cruel than Fang Man being murdered. Even though we weren’t married, I have a responsibility and an obligation to avenge her. I must know who that person is. I’m going to stab him to death with my own hands.”
Du Yuwei asked, “Aren’t you afraid of going to prison?”
I stared outside, falling silent for a long time. “I am. But even if I’m afraid, I’ll still kill him. Otherwise, I’m not a man.”
Du Yuwei said, “I’m sorry, I don’t know his name. And after so many years, I’ve already forgotten what he looks like.”
I didn’t believe her for a second.
If she had truly forgotten his face, how did she recognize him when he was bribing the hit-and-run driver?
“It’s fine. I’ll investigate it myself.”
I let out a helpless laugh. “As long as I’m breathing, I’ll keep looking. I will find out who he is.”
If the person sitting across from me were a living human and not a ghost, I would have laid hands on her one way or another to force the truth out. But there was nothing I could do. She was a ghost, and I didn’t dare touch her-I was afraid she’d toss me right out of the Ferris wheel.
Perhaps sensing the awkward atmosphere, Du Yuwei changed the subject. She began to speak as if to herself. “After I died, I remembered many things. When I was little, I met a young boy. He was a few years older than me, named Li Fuguang. Lv Zhengxian and Li Xiumei were the ones who brought him back.”
I turned my head to look at her. “At that time, your family had already…”
She nodded. “That boy was the seventh victim after my family was murdered.”
I was stunned. This boy, Li Fuguang, was one of the victims of the first round of the Seven Deaths for Life Exchange?
“After Lv Zhengxian and Li Xiumei brought him back, I spent three days with him.”
A faint smile appeared on Du Yuwei’s face as she reminisced. “I was six then, and he was eleven-five years older than me. I called him Brother Fuguang, and he called me little sister.”
“Those three days were the only time I was truly happy from the moment my family was killed until the day I died.”
“Later, Lv Zhengxian took him away. Before he left, I gave him a lollipop. I thought he would come back, but I never saw him again after that.”
I sighed. “He’s dead. They used him to extend someone else’s life.”
Du Yuwei nodded. “I was young then; I thought Lv Zhengxian was taking him back to his parents.”
“Then do you know who that first round of the Seven Deaths for Life Exchange was for? Was it to extend a life, or was it for a Soul Seizure like Lv Zhengxian did?” I asked.
Du Yuwei said, “It was to trade a life for a critically ill child. I overheard Lv Zhengxian and Li Xiumei talking about it later by chance, but I was too young at the time to understand what they meant.”
I asked hurriedly, “Was this child the son of the person who hired Lv Zhengxian?”
Du Yuwei looked at me and nodded again.
“That bastard… His child’s life is a life, but other people’s children aren’t?”
I grit my teeth in anger. “Since his child survived, why did he have to kill Fang Man fifteen years later? How exactly did I offend him?”
I looked at Du Yuwei and asked her very seriously, “Since that man is the root of all this evil and the one who hired Lv Zhengxian to murder your family, he’s your enemy too. Why won’t you tell me who he is? Is his social status even higher than Du Ruhai’s?”
Du Yuwei lowered her head. “I’m sorry. It’s not that I won’t tell you; I really don’t know his name. I don’t know how to tell you.”
I sighed and didn’t press her further.
By now, the Ferris wheel had reached the very top.
I could see the entire night view of Lanjiang City.
“The night view of this city is truly beautiful,” I remarked with emotion.
“Maybe,” Du Yuwei said, staring outside as well, her face devoid of expression. “But I hate it here.”
I froze for a moment, suddenly realizing that this wasn’t her home.
This place held over a decade of miserable memories for her, so she hated it.
“My home is in Qindao. I still remember the way back.”
“Do you want to go home?”
I said earnestly, “Actually, you can go back. Take the child with you.”
After all, her family was there; she could be closer to her parents.
I had heard Old Zhao Seven say that if a ghost kills someone, it becomes very difficult for them to reincarnate.
If Du Yuwei went back now, back to the place where she was born, perhaps that would be the best ending for her.
“Someone ruined my life. They ruined my home. After I regained all my memories, there’s a fragment in my mind… a vision of my father, my mother, and my brother being brutally murdered.”
Du Yuwei looked at me calmly and shook her head. “If my enemy doesn’t die, I have no face to go back and see my family.”
I tried to persuade her, “When a person dies, they’re gone like an extinguished lamp. If you kill someone, you won’t be able to reincarnate.”
“That doesn’t matter to me at all.”
She smiled, a smile tinged with helplessness. “Do you think this world is beautiful?”
I nodded. “I think it’s beautiful. It’s just that we were the unfortunate ones.”
She shook her head. “I don’t think this world is beautiful at all. I don’t want a next life.”
I was left speechless.
The Ferris wheel stopped, and I returned to the ground.
But the child didn’t seem to have had enough yet. I accompanied him and Du Yuwei onto the roller coaster, playing on every ride in the amusement park.
Dawn was fast approaching.
I sat on the swings with the two ghosts.
Du Yuwei suddenly said, “Can the three of us take a photo together?”
I blinked, then took out my phone and snapped a group photo.
Strangely enough, both Du Yuwei and the child were actually captured by my phone’s camera.
Just as I was feeling surprised, I felt an inexplicable sensation that someone nearby was watching us.
In fact, I had felt this way ever since I came inside to meet Du Yuwei.
I asked Du Yuwei if she had noticed anything.
She stuck out her tongue, appearing somewhat playful for once. “I haven’t noticed anything. Don’t forget that I’m a ghost; I can sense everything around me.”
