Chapter 84
Chapter 84
Seeing the expressions on Yun Jianyue’s and Si Wuming’s faces, Gao Weimin was a little taken aback. “What’s wrong?”
Yun Jianyue shook her head and declared righteously, “One look and you can tell he’s an Evil God, and the underhanded kind at that. Everyone has the right to strike him down!”
Granted, it looked like her unfortunate Nominal Husband was taking the blame again, but she stood unwaveringly on the side of the people.
Gao Weimin nodded. “Right. I also think he’s an Evil God. As long as he’s an Evil God, everyone has the right to strike him down.”
“Exactly! I couldn’t agree more!” Yun Jianyue looked resolute enough to join the Party on the spot.
“What exactly do you agree with?”
Mo Chen’s deep, sinister voice came from behind Yun Jianyue.
Had this woman forgotten that the Red Thread of Fate told him everything that happened to her?
Yun Jianyue lit up with delight. “Oh my, if it isn’t our great Lord Evil God!”
Mo Chen: …
Gao Weimin: …
Si Wuming: So damn annoying. He just keeps haunting us.
Mo Chen couldn’t be bothered with a woman like Yun Jianyue, who spoke human to humans and ghost to ghosts, always saying whatever suited her audience. He glanced at the portrait on the table, which had yet to dry and disappear, then asked Gao Weimin arrogantly, “You saw this god’s shrine with your own eyes?”
Gao Weimin thought: So this murderous, shadowless man who appeared out of thin air was the Evil God enshrined in the shrine he’d drawn.
Hmm…
Prosperity, democracy, civility, harmony, freedom, equality, justice, the rule of law, patriotism, dedication…
Gao Weimin repeatedly recited the twenty-four-character Core Socialist Values in his head, then raised his head and looked at Mo Chen with determination. “Give it up. I will never betray humanity or my motherland!”
Yun Jianyue said, “Bro, you weren’t nearly this tough when you were working undercover!”
“Isn’t he the final mastermind behind everything?” Gao Weimin asked in shock.
“Look at him. He’s clear-eyed, stupid, and a several-thousand-year-old virgin. How could he possibly be the mastermind?” Yun Jianyue was equally shocked by Gao Weimin’s train of thought.
For what had to be the umpteenth time, Mo Chen nearly ground his teeth to pieces. “Yun Jianyue!”
She had slandered him like this in front of a mere human. That damned woman truly deserved to die! The instant the Red Thread of Fate broke, he would slice her into a thousand pieces and tear her corpse apart! Then he would deep-fry her soul in boiling oil for eight hundred years, until it was nice and crispy!
Gao Weimin shrank back. “But he really is terrifying when he’s angry.”
Yun Jianyue patted him on the shoulder reassuringly. “It’s fine. He only looks terrifying. Although, he actually is terrifying too. He nearly strangled me to death once, hehehe!”
Gao Weimin thought: Great attempt at comforting me. Please never do it again.
“He strangled you?” Si Wuming’s eyes turned cold. He casually reached out, and a Tang saber appeared in his hand.
“He didn’t just strangle her. He nearly killed her.” Mo Chen regarded Si Wuming at his leisure as Evil God’s Power flowed around him. “What? Do you want to kill me?”
He was clearly itching for a fight as well.
Yun Jianyue reached out and poked Si Wuming’s saber. “You conjured your saber like this back in the Inner World too. Tell me, Show-Off King, are you really human?”
He had lived for so long, yet his appearance hadn’t changed in the slightest.
He also possessed mastery of mystic arts far beyond anyone else in the metaphysics community.
No matter how she looked at it, he seemed like another Mo Chen, an Evil God walking the earth.
But Si Wuming didn’t have even a trace of Evil God’s Power. How could that be explained?
Si Wuming’s eyes widened in shock. Instinctively, he blurted, “I’m sorry…”
He had no idea what he was apologizing for, but apologizing first was never a mistake.
Yun Jianyue treated Si Wuming to a resounding slap across the face without discrimination. Even if he was the Show-Off King, and even if he was an innocent little puppy, he still had to take his lumps!
“Stop making it seem like I’m always bullying you!”
Gao Weimin, who had witnessed the whole thing: …
You just slapped Mr. Si across the face, and now you’re accusing him of making it seem like you bullied him?! Aren’t you a little too good at lying through your teeth? Was the Paranormal Bureau staffed entirely by elite talents like this?!
“Enough fighting. If you two want to fight, do it somewhere far away from me. Let’s get back to the matter at hand!” Yun Jianyue dragged everyone back on topic.
Gao Weimin blankly murmured a couple of acknowledgments before snapping out of it. “Wasn’t the matter at hand that they were worshiping this Evil… um… deity?”
Yun Jianyue took a deep breath. “He’s just the fall guy. Tell me what other clues you have.”
“That’s all,” Gao Weimin replied honestly.
“Then what information was Lin Sicheng trying to get out of you?” Yun Jianyue asked.
Gao Weimin answered, “Inside information about the country’s top leadership, as well as its future development plans.”
Yun Jianyue frowned. “I can understand them wanting to make money. Human greed knows no bounds. But if they wanted that information from you, could they be planning targeted attacks on the country’s leaders? To create chaos, preferably on an international scale?”
Yun Jianyue continued speculating as she thought it through.
If she were the mastermind behind all this, what would she stand to gain?
“First, chaos is the perfect time to rake in money, which fits a criminal organization’s usual style. Second… if the world falls into chaos and demons run rampant, humanity will be too busy surviving to spare any attention for supernatural creatures.”
Yun Jianyue’s gaze shifted between Mo Chen and Si Wuming before finally settling on Mo Chen. “Did you offend someone?”
Mo Chen replied, “Thunder and rain alike are blessings from Heaven. Whatever I do to them is a gift. How could it possibly count as an offense?”
“Great. Go die.” Yun Jianyue slapped Mo Chen across the face too.
How could she ever have expected the Evil God to say anything remotely sensible?
The further she followed the trail of thought, the more she felt that the mysterious mastermind had woven an enormous web, ensnaring everyone within it.
Once that web tightened, it would destroy more than the order of human society. It would also shatter the order governing demons, ghosts, monsters, and every other living being in the world.
It was as though some lunatic wanted to destroy the world.
Huh? Destroy the world?
Yun Jianyue’s eyes suddenly lit up.
Why couldn’t that be the motive?
But why would the mysterious mastermind harbor such a dangerous ambition? Did it have anything to do with Mo Chen? And if it was only about Mo Chen, why had both she and Si Wuming been dragged into it from beginning to end?
“Damn it, I can’t figure this out.” Yun Jianyue finally swore. With so few clues, expecting her to deduce everything through pure guesswork was basically nightmare difficulty.
Gao Weimin asked timidly, “Then what should we do now?”
Yun Jianyue replied, “What else? First, we’ll find a way to meet the three remaining Lin brothers and see exactly what they’re hiding.”
“But meeting them is easier said than done,” Gao Weimin said.
“What’s so hard about it? We just have to create a big enough problem. Then they’ll have no choice but to show themselves.” Yun Jianyue flashed her signature sweet, harmless smile.
If Lu Changxue saw her smiling like that, a chill would have run down her spine.
Whenever Yun Jianyue smiled that way, someone always suffered!
Mo Chen frowned at Yun Jianyue. “What are you planning now?”
Yun Jianyue beamed at him. “They’ve already framed you to your face. Surely you ought to fight back, Nominal Husband?”
“Just tell me what you want me to do,” Mo Chen said through gritted teeth.
“I want you to transport everyone who was tricked into coming here back to China.”
Still smiling, Yun Jianyue added, “Right now.”
